blue kitchen - progress, not perfection........

Not sure when we will ever be "finished", so thought I would post some shots from this morning. It was so serene and pleasant. We "stripped" the kitchen as we are getting ready to vacate the house yet again so that floors can be finished on the main level. Not looking forward to going back to no kitchen and no laundry room again, but this time only for a week or 10 days.

We have lived with it for a few weeks and love it all. I will just be so happy when workmen are finally gone and we can really load it and call it our own. I find that our cabinets are very difficult to capture w/my camera -- the color screams "blue" on these photos, but in the space, not so much - very soft color and shifts from blue to grey as the natural light changes.

Some basic info -

Cabinetry - custom, Heartwood Design, Afton, VA - love them! Perimeter - poplar w/milk paint finish. Island and hutch - stained alder.

Countertops - Soapstone and marble

Main Sink - Whitehaus

Prep - Kohler

Faucets - Delta Victorian

Flooring - rough sawn oak

Appliances:

Frig and freezer - Electrolux Icon

Double Oven - Kenmore Pro

6 burner cooktop - Dacor

Downdraft exhaust - Thermador

Microwave - Kenmore

Thanks to everyone at gardenweb for their support, guidance and feedback along the way -- we have a better space b/c of your expertise and generosity.

    Pretty blue. Beautiful space.

    Lovely.

I'm glad you posted, because I'm torn between blue cabinets just like that color, and sticking with off white ones. (DH isn't crazy about the blue idea.)

I've been looking at a lot of blue paint colors, but haven't found one I like yet, they all seem to be too violet or too green for what I have in mind. Yours is very close, at least on my monitor. What color is it?

BTW, your kitchen and the whole space you showed pictures of are beautiful!

I love your kitchen! You posted your corner cabinet for me to see when I was playing with my layout. I searched for the whole kitchen, and couldn't find it, but I'm so glad to see it now! I love the blue, I love the island, I love the hutch... this is the perfect blue kitchen.

    That is really gorgeous!

Beautiful kitchen, love the cabs, what a gorgeous color. Congratulations on a job well done. Hopefully your week without will also be peaceful and easy.
    Enjoy your new kitchen.

Your kitchen is gorgeous! You've done a beautiful job! I love the classical features and blue color. By the way , what finish did you choose for your faucets?

How lovely! I like the blue cupboards-milk paint has such nice color options, they feel very timeless. Goes well with your rough sawn floors-I like floors that look like they will get better with use!

Thank you for the wonderful comments -- hopefully it will continue to age well as we work the area hard and wanted to be able to appreciate that "patina" that will develop as we live in it.

egganddart - the color is custom. Literally taking a teaspoon of this and and tablespoon of that, mixed in a dixie cup that I then painted on a scrap of poplar and gave to the cabinetmaker, who then sent that off to the milk paint folks to mix. I can give you the formula off the gallon lid if you would like -- but could never find a pre-mixed color that gave me what I wanted.

jctz - the faucets finish is called "Brilliance Stainless"

I am not a blue person, but I absolutely love your kitchen!! (For one thing, I am a 'gray person' and I can see the gray and having some light gray cabinets myself, know how light changes affect the appearance) But the overall feel of your kitchen is so wonderful. Homey and comfortable, yet clean and elegant. Love the warmth and contrast of the darker wood finishes. Your baking counter and breakfast room (plus their views) are so amazing! I would never leave...Do you need any more house than this?! ;-D

That is perfection in my book. That's the color I'd have chosen for my kitchen if I were braver. I love everything about your kitchen. Congratulations on such a beautiful space.

That is so pretty! And you are so close to being done...bet you can't wait!

Your kitchen turned out beautiful but I'm mostly mesmerized by the windows in your eating area! Bet your are looking forward to getting your dining table set into place and enjoying the view. The windows in your kitchen area are lovely too!

Bluetiful! I'm so glad you found just the right shade of blue -- it's warm, welcoming, and gorgeous!

Again - thanks for the warm comments. We do love it and for those who are "afraid" of colored cabinets -- go for it! My DH wanted white, I knew that w/three boys and an area that gets blasted w/afternoon sun that I could not live w/a kitchen that bright. I am so glad that I forced the issue and went with the color. It is unique, feels calm and comfortable for me while having all the view in the world -- I love our windows! A friend came by yesterday and commented - "do you feel like you are in a tree house?" Well, YES and it is fabulous!

I can't wait to get a table in the eating area - we have only had a card table up and are still wrestling w/size and shape. I had originally wanted a banquette against the back wall, but think I am going to lose that one. I just imagined curling up on the bench surrounded by that view -- heavenly. We had a bench seat in a bay window in our old kitchen and I LOVED IT! Could slide so many little bodies on it when feeding a crowd. We have a temporary table that we will use after we can get back in and then see what happens.
rhome - thanks for checking in and commenting. You were a great help in this process and encouraged me to go with my instincts when I was "stuck". We love the baking counter and my drawers for storage. Your kitchen was my inspiration for that, way back when. You did and continue to share so much -- thank you!

I really, really love what you did. That blue is gorgeous!

Fabulous job! Absolutely beautiful. Love the blue and the stained cabs. Love the way you designed all the different zones. Just a great job overall. Congratulations!!!

    alice462,

Your kitchen is such an inspiration - you designed and built an amazing space. It is beautiful and warm and inviting. That morning light is indeed very serene. You say "not perfection" - well, your kitchen may not be complete but it looks pretty perfect to me! I would feel so comfortable in that room and really wouldn't need to leave :)
It immediately reminded me of a couple of websites I frequent for ideas- link below - of some inspiration cabinets from PlainEnglish Cupboardmakers and the "tradition" line of kitchens at Kvanum Kok (a Swedish company) I'm including web addresses here just in case link below doesn't work. Also I can only put one link so will follow up with second link (for the Swedish company). Anyone who loves an antique, traditional kitchen there are some great kitchens for inspiration.

For some reason the link on your photos to Photobucket does not work for me, when I click on it - says "The action that you were trying to perform has failed". Is there a password or something I'm not doing right. I'd love to see some closeups - and especially of your cabinets. Do you have a layout that you could post?

We are planning a very similar kitchen - painted (milk paint) perimeter cabinets with dark (ours will be medium grade cherry) island and hutch/pantries, rough hewn oak wide board floors. I originally thought we would do white painted on the perimeter but have lately considered gray/tan/taupe. Your kitchen gives me more inspiration for doing that. We have lots of windows all around the room and will have bright light most of the day. I am trying to achieve an antique keeping room feel. I love the eating area that you have -Our room is a large rectangle but also will accommodate a large table - will look for an antique or farm style table - maybe with a bench on one side for, like you say squeezing lots of little bodies in. :) sounds wonderful!

Would love to see more photos, close-ups, and layout. I'll check the kitchens in progress blog to see if you've posted anything there. Thanks for posting!

I love the color. One of the aspects of doing cabinetry in a color that is not "popular" at any given time (dark oak in the 70s, golden oak or pickled oak 80s, shiny white 90s etc.)---is that it has a confounding effect on dating the kitchen. Its going to have staying power because it is classic AND unique.

Sometimes it's difficult to get a new kitchen to really look like anything other than a new kitchen. You've succeeded in making this kitchen have a very authentic historic feel. I love it, not only because it's beautiful, but also because it doesn't look like everybody else's. I know your friends and family will enjoy this space, and I'm sure you will too.
