How would you rather sleep?

My guest bed is a double bed. I'm considering the use of a queen sized comforter, so that with two people in the bed there will be less of a problem of one rolling over and taking all the comforter with them. Is this a potential problem or am I imagining things? A double sized comforter would certainly look better. Of course, many just come in a full/queen size, but not the two I'm considering the most strongly.

If it's filled with down, a too-large comforter runs the risk of the down accumulating at the sides, creating weight at the edges and taking insulation away from the occupants of the bed.

    Just a thought.

I doubt it would be a huge problem looks-wise, and if I were your guest I would very much appreciate the added comfort and coverage that a queen size comforter gives. I really dislike having to constantly tug and pull to get comfortable.

How about a double sized comforter and an extra blanket in the closet or folded at the bottom of the bed.

Many comforters come in a full/queen size. Remember a queen size bed is only 6 inches wider than a full and 5 inches longer. Many manufacturers do not make a full size, just queen and king. So if the one you like the best is a queen, that will work fine. Most better comforters have enough stitching so that the stuff stays in place.
Do you have a sofa and a loveseat or two sofas? If two sofas I might look at a square rug as well as a square coffe table.
    Good luck in you search.

I find your oversized comfort a very thoughtful gift to your guests. And it can be presented beautifully with the pillows and other linen arrangement. I love that you even have this thought for your guest, you are very kind!

alisande, these won't be filled with down, just fluffy polyester I think! Our nights don't get that cold.

ingrid, yes, it's just that which I want to avoid! I know that most couples today sleep in a larger bed normally

happy - yes, I will have extra blankets available

3d - thanks for the encouragement on the queen size. I think your other advice was intended for someone else.

bodica, what a sweet thing to say! I'm so thrilled to finally have a dedicated guest room that WILL NOT double as a storage room. I'm quite enjoying making it nice.

Now I just need to decide how important washability is to me. I've found two that I like well - both will work in the room. But the prettiest is dry clean only, something I tend to avoid like the plague.

Thanks liz, I was trying to respond to the question of someone about a rug. I just looked at that message and I was wondering why I did not see my response. LOL. I must have clicked too fast.

Is it a pillowtop mattress? If so...bigger is better.

I would avoid dry cleaning too. I like the idea of getting the best fitting spread and putting on blankets which will be big enough to accommodate both.

If the comforter looks too big and hangs down too low, you aren't going to like it. Why not buy a couple sizes and bring them home to try on? Return the one you don't like.

I lived half my adult life with a double bed. I started out with straight double size comforter (seems like they were easier to find back in the day) and I (sleeping alone) ended up getting the full/queen size exactly because of what you described...rolling and moving the bedding. The full/queen solved the problem.

I never thought it looked odd or not correctly sized.

I have a queen comforter on a double bed in a guest room.
    It looks fine.
I also buy my sheets separate so I can get a double bottom
    and a queen top sheet.

love-my-lil-home, I had completely forgotten that sheets can be bought individually! Where do you find them? I've checked a few stores' online site, but only found them at Amazon.

liz I usually find individual sheets at HomeGoods, Marshalls
or anywhere you have a big box store.
WalMart but we are talking cheap stuff.
I'm thinking I bought Ralph Lauren once or twice.
Not sure about Dillards...ask threegrad about that.
I'm sure mine came from HomeGoods because I get most bedding there.

Thanks, I'll look at Home Goods. I've looked at a lot of things in there, but not the bedding. A local TJ Maxx was supposed to have the comforter I'm looking for in today, but no such luck!

Btw, I found that there are still some TJ Maxx stores that don't have separate Home Goods stores. Apparently the two store carry separate items in housewares.

at Dillards the only good sheets sold separately are Ralph Lauren. We should have another white sale coming in June, I think. The solid color RL sheets seldom go on sale unless they are discontinued colors. We do have RL prints marked down.

I have a queen size duvet on my double bed in the guest room and you would never know it. It will look fine.
