not my week

So, earlier this week my granite was supposed to get installed. During the install process, it was discovered that the hole for the prep sink was cut too large....

So,I agreed to try a larger prep sink. It is bigger than what I wanted but I'm going to see if I can work with it. The offer to get all new granite is available but I really love my piece and it took several granite yards to find it. Granite yards are hours away from me so I don't relish doing it all over again....

New sink came in this morning and I went to see it and the new template on the granite.

Granite guys did their thing and showed up a few hours later with the bigger sink and newly shaped granite piece.

They had to work hard to get the new sink to fit in a cabinet that was custom built for the smaller sink. They had to route some out. They got it in....just barely.

They got the granite on top and asked for me to take a look.

The new sink is larger. The granite is beautiful. Sink is much bigger. I'm working on adjusting.

Then, I look up and notice a crack in my window that goes to countertop level behind the sink. I'm sure a piece of debris flew up and cracked it while they were routing out the cabinet.

Ugh! I'm sure the granite company will take care of the window but it's just another thing to have to deal with.

Meanwhile, I will be working on adjusting to the larger sink.....

well, I hope you come to love your newly enlarged sink. I know it is hard to change plans.

As far as your window-yikes! Have you seen that commercial for some flooring (Armstrong?). The couple hangs the picture, it falls, causes some sort of reaction through the walls, then the giant crystal chandy falls, smashes the glass dining table...but the floor is ok.

So, how's the granite under the window?

I'm sorry to hear about your troubles. As I tell my son, just breathe! And think about how you'll look back at this and laugh once you're enjoying a glass of wine when it's all over!

I'm so sorry you have a new problem! I bet you'll come to love the sink if you let yourself....Look at it and see its good points, rather than letting yourself wonder how the other one would've looked and imagining it better. My sink, the same size as the one you'd originally planned, works pretty well, but this larger one will be better to be able to rinse/wash any of your pots and pans that won't go in the dishwasher. If I ever do another kitchen, I'm getting a larger prep sink, just for that reason.

I'd be surprised that a bit of wood debris from routing could break a window? But stranger things have happened, I'm sure.

I can't wait to see your kitchen. I'd imagined it when you were doing the plans, and am eager to see your beautiful granite.

Sounds like your granite guys are having a tough week too!

You'll probably really like the bigger sink once you're using it...if you can somehow manage to get all your things under it!

Go pet your granite. Isn't it nice? (Hey--where are the pictures???)

Thanks guys. Thankfully the granite is fine. I'm sure the crack happened before they got the granite even in the house. It is beautiful and I have been petting the piece that got installed earlier this week. It is lovely.

The prep sink will never be used for washing dishes...it's for cleaning vegetables, filling pots for the stove etc. I have a larger sink near the dishwasher for dishes and such.

I could easily clean an entire bag of potatoes in this sink.

I'm wondering if there is some sort of cutting board I could get that would go across half of it so I could just slide the vegetable scraps into the big sink. I will have a garbage disposal in it....I looked on the Kohler site and don't see an option for that. Ideas?

Pictures will be coming soon. I haven't even seen it full installed yet myself. I stayed home long enough to give them the ok on the bigger sink and then pick faucet placement. Then I went back to work.

Still have to get handles on the cabinets..they're full overlay and it is really hard to open them without handles!

New sink is not only larger but is deeper too. I guess I could hide dirty pans in an emergancy down there...away from the normal guest traffic.

Your granite guys owe you something--maybe they could fabricate you a chunk to fit in the hole (if you have a...ummm...positive? reveal). A wooden cutting board should be a good candidate for a custom hole filler, but if you want it flush I think you'll still need the proper reveal to support it...

As far as the cutting board, can you just get over to BB&B and find one that would fit? I just got one that fits over my sink and it has a strainer built in. Love it. Grab one of those 20% off coupons and check them out. They have a huge selection. TJMaxx & Homegoods usually have pretty good selections too. I just couldn't find one with the strainer.

Another advantage of the larger sink? When you are having a party, it can hold more ice and drinks if you use it as an icebucket!

We are all very excited about seeing photos.

Oh, I like the idea of a cutting board/strainer concept. We have a slight negative reveal so the cutting board inserted into the sink space won't work.

Hadn't thought about using the sink as a place for ice & drinks. That's a great idea.

    Thanks.

We used to always use our prep sink for bottles of wine and drinks at our old house. It was a perfect place nearer to the table and then we didn't have to use an unsightly ice box or anything--and when the party was over, we'd just open the drain and leave all the ice to melt! This was actually the reason I wanted something called a trough sink....but the trough sink seemed too narrow for other everyday uses.

Hope you get used to the bigger sink and that the "half full" will overcome the "half empty"....and while you're at it, fill that glass more than half full with something that will help you overcome your tough week! :)

You can also have a flush filler fabricated with little wooden legs that stand in the sink, whether it's wood topped or granite topped--though the granite one might need a suction cup handle rather than a finger hole because of the weight. You just need a good craftsmand. Your fabricators might be able to do it, however, or two, so you can cover half the sink or the whole sink.

    Eks6426,

    ((((((big hugs))))))

The cutting board sounds like a great option.
Do you know what sink brand it is?

I know that Oliverie, Elkay, Kohler, all make
cutting boards to fit their sinks. And there are companies
all over that also can get the dimensions of your sink to
make a walnut or cherry or pine... cutting board.

If you tell me your sink name, I can try to do a search
for you and see what I come up with.
    Here are some images...

Elkay makes this one and many others too.

Vermont Cutting Boards (measure and design you own)

Kohler makes this and many others

Oliverie sinks makes this and many others

Or a cutsom design by the people at this link.

And lets all pray, hope, wish that next week is a great
    week for you.

Pllog--Hmm, didn't know about the sink filler with little legs to make it stand up. I will have to think about that option.

Boxerpups--the new sink model is a Kohler 6587 Cast Iron sink. A cutting board that covers about 1/2 the sink would be great. The strainer in it is cool too.

I think I need a full glass of something this week. Unfortunately, I have a ton of homework for my interior design class so no drinking until I'm done rendering.

I've always LOVED the idea of a cutting board that snugly fits into one side of the sink...

But I have 3 plus feet on each side of my sink of open useable area so it seemed like it might be easier and cheaper to just have the cutting board on the side since there is plenty of room for it.

So ultimately I did/am doing a stardard negative reveal apron installation.

Did anyone do a sink with a cutting board in a larger kitchen?

frankly I don't think you will regret having a larger prep sink especially because you had the foresight to have a garbage disposal installed with it so that it is truly functional--
house we bought had prep sink on island that is probably "normal" size but has no garbage disposal--what use is that for prep==I wind up having to gather all my peeling/cuttings and put them in garbage can...
I think maybe the owners were more "composting" people than we were so maybe she did not throw her refuse away...
but it is just poor planning in my book

plus as other people said having a larger sink maybe lets you use it for icing down drink bottles--or other uses--

and deeper sinks are always better because they reduce the splash factor anyway...

    eks6426,

According to the web site the dimensions for 6887 are...
    Undercounter: 17-7/8"L x 17-7/8"W

I could not find a specific cutting board to go with it.
But why not see if you can have one made. Or call them
directly. They had two beautiful cutting boards
that could fit your sink but were not specifically made to
    it.

And I must say looking at the sink on line. I REALLY
like it. I had a Kohler prior to my kitch reno. I miss
it. It was a great work horse in my home. My DH wanted
stainless. I wonder if this larger sink may be a blessing
    in disguise.

boxer--thank you for checking. I hadn't seen one either. I will look into having one made. Maybe the granite shop can get one made for me :)

Loves2cook--I do have a garbage disposal planned for this sink so I'm hoping it turns out to be super functional.

Hubby is working on hooking up water & drain lines today. I might actually have running water in the kitchen by the end of the weekend...first time this year!
