clocks and mirrors

Just wondering what everyone's thoughts are on wall clocks and mirrors. Should every room in the house have at least one of each? Are there certain rooms (I'm thinking of the main floor of the house, not bedrooms and bathrooms) where you think either a clock or mirror is inappropriate, or a room where you think they are a necessity (a clock in the kitchen, for example, seems essential to me, and my mother always said you needed to have a mirror next to the front door so you could check for flour on your nose before you answered the bell, lol.) Also does anyone use either as a form of decorating (besides being just functional) - say, a grouping of clocks or mirrors on a wall? Thanks for your comments!

I don't have any wall clocks, nor do I have decorative mirrors on walls. I have wall mirrors in the bathrooms and one in the master bedroom (which I don't actually use as the master). The oven clock and cable box clocks are our only clocks other than bedside alarm clocks and one antique clock on a sofa table. We gave DS our carved antique wall clock and grandfather clock from my grandparents.

Guess we don't much care about the time or our looks-teehee.

I have a mirror in the foyer and functional ones in the bathrooms.

There are clocks on my microwave and stove so I don't have one in the kitchen but have considered it in the past since I do like the look of them. The only other clocks are the alarm clocks in the bedroom.

I like both mirrors and clocks but don't have enough wall space or don't find them necessary. I actually have 3-4 mirrors that are stored in the attic until I can figure out what to do with them.

I've seen groupings of both done and really like the look. Vintage or antique seems to make it more interesting.

I have both used as decor in many rooms. I see them as being functional AND decorative. I've tried to make the mirrors in my bathrooms (functional) as decorative as possible. And I have a collection of antique clocks (decorative) that also serve as timepieces in the rooms they are in. I have a decorative mirror in my living room that reflects what I consider a pretty view of my staircase but it also serves to bounce some light around a room that needs it.

We have both mirrors and clocks in every room, including
    the kitchen

I don't have wall clocks or mirrors in any room, except for mirrors in the bathrooms. Like others, I have two or three clocks in the kitchen embedded in appliances and an alarm clock in the bedroom.

Mirrors are beautiful, and I've never forgotten having it pointed out that they reflect a very cool light, something I really appreciate living in the sultry South.

Practically speaking, in rooms with windows on, say, just one wall, mirrors are very valuable for bouncing light around the room from different directions--working to equalize its intensity. That way you don't turn from a dark wall with your pupils expanded and wince and squint as they encounter the blaze of light in the window itself. That's why you'll often see mirrors positioned between windows in antique homes--to keep the wall from contrasting too strongly with its windows. I went overboard with windows in this house, though, and appreciate the rare wall that doesn't include a view out--no mirrors in those rooms except for one positioned in the center of the house to allow me to stand in the kitchen doorway and see who's at the (open) front door. Of course, it's very pretty too.

There is one, antique clock on a bookcase in the dining room, not wound to preserve its workings, just for decoration. No visible working clocks in any room we like to just relax in. We have few daily deadlines these days, but I'm still traumatized by memories of the old rush-rush-rush lifestyle and don't want reminders. :)

I think I read somewhere that you're not "supposed to" have a clock in the formal dining room because you don't want your guests to feel like they are under some kind of time constraint (unless you do, lol.) On the other hand, I was at a restaurant in New Orleans that had one full wall covered with clocks in different styles...it was beautiful and I didn't feel rushed at all , maybe because there were so many of them...and I honestly can't recall if they were all actually keeping time.

I have a mirror in the entry, bathrooms, above dresser in master bedroom and behind the door in the guest room. I have been told or read that you should only place a mirror where the reflection is pretty. Not that I follow that belief but what I've heard.

I'd use more mirrors if I had more locations for them.

As for clocks, we have the typical stove, microwave and ipod radio clock in the kitchen. Larger wall clock in LR, alarm clocks in master bedroom and guest room. Both bathrooms have small decorative clocks that probably haven't been set since the time change a month ago. LOL.

I've also read or been told that you should never place a clock in the bedroom. I don't really remember the reasoning other than it's tacky or something.

I mostly follow with the if I like it, I use it theory.

My house will never make a magazine. But I sure like it. :-)

Why would you not have a clock in a bedroom?

I have clocks in all rooms except the living room, dining room, and two bathrooms. I'd put clocks in those rooms, too, if I could find something I like. Mirrors in most all rooms, too.

Clocks in all rooms except bathrooms, hallways, and laundry, many of them are on appliances. Mirrors in all rooms except master bedroom (supposedly bad feng shui).

I love mirrors for decorating because they are interesting without being "busy" and they also reflect light. I have them everywhere! There is one above my mantel and I have a collection of small ones on a wall in the foyer as well as a collection of mixed antique mirrors, newer mirrors, and small, formal portraits above the sofa in the formal living room. One of the reasons I prefer collections vs. one large mirror is to de-emphasize the "vanity" quality---you don't tend to notice yourself as much in the group of smaller ones.

I have only one wall clock. It is in the kitchen, but visible from the family room as well.

I chuckled about your story about checking your nose for flour... My mother tells a story about falling asleep on her bed during the day when my oldest sister was a toddler and waking to the doorbell. When she answered it, it was a vacuum salesman (1950's) who looked at her and said, "That's okay lady. I can see it's been a rough day." When she looked at herself in the mirror she saw that my sister had dumped an entire bottle of baby powder on her while she slept!

When I redo my bathroom this summer (hopefully) I will find a pretty decorative clock to use in there. I am always pushed for time in the morning getting ready for work and am constantly running to look at the kitchen clock. I don't wear a watch.

If I had the right spot, I would definitely have a train station clock like Loribee has in her beautiful entry hall.

DD's family room and kitchen are open to each other with sloped ceiling. I keep telling her one of those clocks would be pretty on the taller interior wall between the two spaces. I need to show her Loribee's clock.

Went back and looked at Lori's picture - it's is a subway clock. I was close.

    Clock radio in bedroom.

Small battery clock on glass shelf in bathroom because I have, uh, time management problems in the morning.

Clocks on stove, microwave and coffee maker in kitchen.

Clock above DVR inside glass door cabinet in media console. Might replace with pretty decorative clock on top of media console - I saw a funny-looking one I liked with a lot of exposed gears. Or might stick with ugly but very functional red LED clock.

Don't feel need for anything else that's going to need resetting come daylight savings time.

Mirrors don't need to be reset, but I haven't found any I love. (Other than the one my friend made from a found-and-refinished wagon wheel. It's way cool.)

I think clocks and mirror both are necessary for every room because we need them, that's why i have set them in every room of my house.
