My new kitchen already outdated!!

So during my remodel I let the newspaper stack up and am now just about caught up. In the Real Estate section one Saturday in January, the Washington Post listed the lastest trends in kitchen design:

In: Remodeling existing space

Out: Building an addition

In: Under-counter refrigeration

Out: SXS fridges

In: Induction cooktop

Out: Gas

In: Super big metal sinks

Out: Divided metal sinks

In: Open shelving

Out: Ornate cabinets

In: Quartz

Out: Granite

In: Chrome hardware

Out: Nickel hardware

In: Wooden floor

Out: Tile

In: LED lighting

Out: Halogen

In: Islands

Out: Built-in desk

In: Contemporary, simple lines

Out: Traditional, ornate details

I'm sorta IN (remodeled existing space, got rid of SXS fridge, big metal sink, contemporary lines) but mostly OUT: gas range, granite, nickel hardware, tile floor, halogen, no island. Just shoot me now! lol

Joanie, Count me in as out on almost half of the list, but don't worry, we will be in again soon. Maybe in June or July.

    Darn.
That shoots the "timeless" concept in the bummy, doesn't it?

Good thing you've got a gorgeous kitchen you love, huh? :)

    What is SXS firdge?

    Joanie,

I think you need to remodel ASAP to stay up-to-date.

Let me know when and I'll rent a truck right away to come get your-soon-to-be-old cabinets and other stuff :P

I have a feeling you live not too far from me, so it won't take long for me to get there. I'll even help you get them out, so you don't have to pay for demo. Deal?

As long as WE love our kitchens.........who else really matters? I'd love to see pictures.

Meh..just like they say white kitchens are out but every designer magazine I get still shows white kitchens. I did see some very cool bronze appliances but I think SS is still the trend.

It's all a conspiracy to get people to constantly remodel. I'm only half joking!

I shouldn't have changed anything. Shoulda just waited instead.

Cooking with gas is "out?" Funny.

Islands are in? Don't they mean...still in? They're not a new concept! LOL

Lavender, absolutely true! That's a significant part of why I was so happy refurbishing sweet old kitchens and literally NEVER wanted a new one--until full-extension drawers replacing rooting around on dark shelves enticed me into joining the crowd running on the wheel.

Joaniepoanie, you could always join the serene vintage crowd. It'd take some paint in your own flavor of the day to cover the finish of the year on your cabinets. (Important to apply it yourselves to get the correct look.) Your husband could use a jigsaw to construct shelves around your windows, and you'd be halfway home already. Some knicknacks from your grandma's house and other memorabilia. Your granite, of course, would make an excellent base for anything you chose to hide it with. :)

Out: Caring about what other people say that I should want.

I will stay outdated and continue cooking during power outages on my all gas range! Oh and I liked & miss my 60/40 sink over my big single now.

"I will stay outdated and continue cooking during power outages on my all gas range!"

    Me too! LOL.

I love induction and I am adding a unit but with frequent power outages, gas is a "must" around here.

My sister (still) has oak cabinets that she hasn't had time to replace (baby, school, workaholic husband - you know how it goes). The last time I saw them - after a long break - I was shocked how "fresh" and "in" they looked to me even though I had never been an oak cabinet fan.

    Go figure...

lol....lol....OH, NO, he just drilled holes in my new doors to put my out of date brushed nickle hardware on them last Friday, the same day he installed my appliences, some of which are out of date, not an induction cooktop. My flooring is bamboo strand because I wanted it, is that out of date too, that was put in yesterday? Tell me, before I choose an out of date BS, is subway tile out of date too? Any which way, I hope to finish my out of date kitchen soon, oh did I forget to tell you I'm using out of date creamy white cabients too. Just hope I like my new out of date kitchen more then I liked my old out of date oak cabinets.

I don't understand how additions can be out if the space is too small. I would rather buy a properly done house with addition for a beautiful kitchen than a redone small kitchen.

I also don't think islands are and in/out thing. My island makes my kitchen function.

Under counter fridges are great drinks, veggies draws ect but what about my big jug of milk and marinating roast?

I love the look of a gas and the function of it. So in my design book it is in.

I did chose quartz but I did consider some beautiful granites. If everyone had the same countertop than it would become a fad.

I have nickel hardware because I like the look and it doesn't show fingerprints quite so easy. All my plumbing fixtures and door handles (with the exception of a few vintage brass) are all brushed nickel.

The Washington Post is a regular lurker here.
Rosie? Your granite, of course, would make an excellent base for anything you chose to hide it with.
You owe me a keyboard. LOL!

well, some of my future kitchen is out before it got put in... and what was staying was already out.

and I was looking online at SxS in case my small top frzr one dies. I think that'd work better for me. except they all seem to have the water'n ice thing on the door. don't want that.

good thing I don't pay attention to what's in and what's out.

I don't believe everything I read, not even in the Washington Post. Just one person's opinion. There are some things I don't care how in or out they are, I'm not going that way.

That's a funny list! Who can possibly just have undercounter refrigeration and nothing else? Any full sized fridge configuration is all up to owner preference. I didn't realize it was only about style. I thought some functionality played a part there!

And some granites are very very pretty and in style and very timeless. I still say the outdated ones are the builder's grade ones that were super over done because they were so cheap to put in.

And count me as another gas user who will be happy cooking during power outages! That's something to be considered here. And maybe they need to talk to professional chefs about the gas ranges since they seem to be very much still in demand. There was such a limited selection of induction ranges, it was almost impossible to find anything.

Not doing too bad - in middle of remodel
    In: Remodeling existing space
    Out: SXS fridges
In: Induction cooktop - Having power is only half the battle - do you know how cold it can get in the winter and the furnace doesn't run without electricity even though gas - so off to visit friends. Last major outage - just packed the bags and headed north!
In: Super big metal sinks - we are doing silgranit
Out: No way do I want to dust upper shelving - although we will have a shelf on the wall
    In: Quartz
    In: Chrome hardware
    Out: Nickel hardware
    In: Wooden floor
    In: LED lighting
In: Islands - no room for an island
Out: Built-in desk - go rid of our desk
    In: Contemporary, simple lines

    Stay tuned

When you're out you're out. Everything seems to be a learning experience and progress. You can skip ahead a little with polished stainless hardware and fixtures.
