Another Easy Touch question

My pool and spa are both on the same system: Intelliflo VS-3050, Master Temp 250 and solar for heat, Pentair Cart. filter, booster pump for pool sweep all controlled via an Easy touch 4. I also have an ET indoor controller, I've yet to install.

For additional filtration I have my spa run from 7-8 AM at 2000 RPM.

Pool/Spa from 8 AM -4 PM at 1000 RPM, W/Solar 1500 RPM.

Booster 10 -11 AM.

This weekend I connected my heater to the ET but I can't get it to come on both in Auto and Service mode. Prior to that I used it manually and it worked fine. I'm using Aux 3 for the heater and I activated it through the Heat Menu. I doubled checked my wiring and all appears to be fine. I get power to the heater when I press Aux 3 so I'm thinking I must have created a programing conflict.

What I would like is for my pool/spa to be heated by solar. The only time I would want my heater is when I want to use the spa alone. Any suggestions as to what I may have done wrong or what I should do? I also tried changing the setting to Spa (Hi-Temp) Pool (Lo-Temp). Once this is figured out I should be done.

Thanks

Frank

You should hook power to your heater through the "filter" contact, or you can wire it hot all the time. Then you need to run a low voltage 2wire cable from the heater to the easytouch. You will hook up the wires to the "fire man switch" in the heater, and then to the 2 wire heater connection on the easytouch board. This is all outlined in the manual.

Here is a link that might be useful: Master Temp Manual

What do you mean by powering through the Filter contact? My understanding is that this Aux is dedicated to the pool/spa. The heater is wired 240v to the Aux 3 relay line terminals then 240v load terminals to the heater. I wired the the 2 wire cable from the firemans switch to the Gas Heater connection on the motherboard. And yes, the 240v plug is installed. If this is wrong please let me know but I'm pretty sure its correct. Like I said I don't believe its a wiring issue, more a program conflict. It certainly would easier if it was just wiring.

    Thanks

The filter button has to be on to fire the contact for the heater, and control the heat through the water sensor. That is why we normally power the heater through that contact. Yes when you are heating the pool, or spa you are using the filter contact. You would need to have a pool speed, and a spa speed set for your intelloflo The Aux 3 wont work correctly.

Forgot to mention, downside is the system doesnt let you heat with solar and gas at the same time, you have one or the other or a prefered.

If you want to be able to do use both at the same time but with manual heat control, then you will run power to your heater all the time, and run the LV wire to your contacts on Aux 3.
Doing this, everytime you turn on aux3 the heater will come on and heat to whatever temp is set on the heater. Of course a pump will have to be on for it to fire.

Feed the heater power from the line side of a relay. This will keep the heater on. The fireman's switch is how the EZ tells the heater to fire up.

If you want manual control of when the heater is to be used, when in the settings menu, under the spa, tell it which heat source to use, temp desired, and Off. The Off setting lets you hit the heater button.

Thanks guys I think I'm beginning to understand. Correct me if I'm wrong. If I take power for the heater directly from the Filter relay, and have my LV 2 lead go from the Fireman Switch to the Heater button on the Motherboard it should be good to go. Its already programed pool/solar and spa/heater with temps. It makes sense and I'll give it try tomorrow.

I have a similar setup as yours: solar-only in pool-mode and solar-preferred for the spa-mode. In my case, since my kids can turn the spa on and off several times a day (more so for the jets and bubbles), I wanted an "easy" way to limit when the gas heater was used (i.e. not having to go through the setup menus).

Instead of powering the gas heater from the pump relay, I have the gas heater connected to one of the auxiliary relays and control it from one of the function buttons on the remote, along with a 20-minute egg-timer schedule to limit runtime.

So when I want to heat the spa (and the system is calling for gas heat) all I do is press the associated function button to power up the gas heater. Now my kids can enjoy the spa whenever they want, without emptying my propane tank and wallet.

Another reason I setup my spa this way is that sometimes I "plan" on using the spa later in the day, and want to use the solar to preheat the spa water as much as possible, again to minimize gas usage. This allows the spa water to heat using solar only without the concern of the gas heater turning on.
