Bizarre Decorating Ideas

Dh & I live in the Northwet. We use bicycles as our second car, and don't like getting on cold wet bicycles, especially in the morning. For various reasons, the garage isn't an option for them.

I would like to not spend much money, but dh can make anything out of wood, and is very good at diy.

I got the idea of decorating our living room with bicycles. We aren't using the living room for anything right now, it is the first room you see as you walk in the house. It's not really decorated right now.

I found a wooden bicycle rack online that doubles as a bookshelf. I thought I could park my bicycle on the floor, and put the rack for dh's bicycle (he's fine with this part).

I'm hoping to go to Joann's and find some fabric with bicycles on it. While we both love the old style bicycle with the large front wheel, because both our bicycles are drop handle bar, I'm thinking that the large front wheel antique bicycle would be out of place. I'm thinking I could make some pillows for the living room couch, and use the same fabric for the lamp that is in there.

We were watching something on hgtv or diy the other day, and they had a lamp made from a wire basket. Then, the top and bottom edges of the basket had a bicycle chain on it. I also think I could get a picture frame from the $ Tree and put a bicycle chain on it. I've even thought of putting a family picture in it, with us on our bicycles.

My questions are: Have I totally flipped? Some think it's the greatest idea, and others I've asked think it's equivalent of decorating around dirty laundry.

Do you have any other ideas that I'm missing?

Do you have a good idea for the flooring? Currently, there's at least 15 yo carpet in that room. Clearly, it doesn't work with the bicycles.

Thanks!

I don't think you've flipped- I think it's great! I think you should go for it.

My husband is an avid cyclist. The only bicycling-related decorating item we have is a clock bordered with a bicycle chain, but I'm going to look up that bookshelf-bicycle rack.

You're right, bicycle grease would be hard on carpet. Tile is easy maintenance-

Have fun and please post pics when you're done if you decide to do it :).

At first I thought you'd mistyped Northwest...then I got it! I'm here, too, so I REALLY get it!

While it's not my cup of ...coffee...(the nw, you know) others have had the same idea. Granted, it's a bedroom, but might give you ideas about art:

Here is a link that might be useful: bike theme

I love the bike tires on the wall!

I suppose a related question is, how much light do you need in a room that's really not used much? Would it be tacky to invite everyone into the family room from, oh, say November to May?

I hope I get the gist of what you're talking about so this makes sense, but instead of having the bikes on the floor, what if you made over sized frames that you could hang the bikes in (on the wall) when their not in use.

My first DH was a competative racer. His bikes were works of art and state of the art.

There was a simple shelf, where the whole front edge of it curved down and up, where the sissy bar could lay. It was perfectly balanced & he put his water bottles & trophys up there. Can't get away from the little boy part of it. [LOL]

But they were pretty cool. The shelves were wood. You know those shelf brackets that have a hook under them where you could put a clothes rod? Perhaps your husband could think of something using that type of hook.

I think the important thing in our homes is to use the rooms. Why have museums for furniture? If this works for you & improves your life and function? I think it's GREAT!

Fellow NW-er here, except on the dry side now. :) This sounds like a very PDX or SEA sort of thing.

I think this could work depending upon the style of your house. How.... "bizarre" are the other rooms? :) If you have a somewhat eclectic style in your house and/or funky decor already, this could be executed well... I can see it fitting in many homes in PDX. It definitely could work with an industrial theme or accents.

For me, it would look very odd in my traditional home. If I was in this same situation, I would probably design a piece of wood furniture that houses the bikes and hides them. That furniture can otherwise be used as a table...

Designing furniture that hides the bikes is a great idea. I'm ashamed to say that neither dh nor I thought of it. It could look like a modern day armoire, too. My immediate thought is some cupboard doors on the bottom with some drawers over the bikes so we can stash our bike gloves etc. Helmets usually stay on the bikes.

To answer, our home is, well, our own style. Eclectic at best, definitely NOT traditional. On the contemporary side, but not super modern. It's hard to describe.

I like that idea, too. Building something where you could hang them inside.

Keep in mind that an untraditional home, you'll have to carefully consider the lines and style. The last thing you want is a giant bike coffin dominating a room.

And that's what we ultimately decided. That room is just too small for a bike closet. So, back to plan A. I'm off to Joann's Friday I think.
