Existing 25 yo pool - Cost to resurface with pebbletec

I live in the California bay area and have an existing 25 yo plaster surface pool. THe pool is 20x40 rectangle in remarkably good shape - no cracking or other issues.

We would like to update it a bit by having it resurfaced with pebble tec.

I got a bid of $19,000 from a local pool contractor - this is only resurface the pool. This is way out of our budget and far more than I expected.

Am I just totally clueless about the costs involved? I have seen where pebble tec adds $5000 to the cost of surfacing a new pool but I don't know anything about the cost to update an existing pool.

Any thoughts or recommendations for pool contractors in the Palo Alto - San Jose area would be welcome. I obviously need a little education.

Cost down here for a pool your size in So Cal is about $8500 for a group 1 pebble tec wo/tile. Go to pebble tec's web site and contact the nearest applicator in you area. The pool builder is a middle man for the pebble applicator.

I'm in the Bay area as well. Be very carefull who you hire since I know several folks in the area who have been ripped off. Also - be sure pebble tec is really what you want as some are disappointed and wish they stayed with regular plaster.

dapooltec - unfortunately the closest Pebble tec installer that they have on their website is over an hour away and in an area with tons of pools - they are very backed up.

I guess the guy who quoted isn't "certified" since he wasn't on their website? How does that work? I know his company does great work - our landlord while we remodel had her pool done - that is what turned us on to pebble tec. She is in real estate and he has done at least 8 other pools for her. He is just very expensive - used to 2-3 million dollar properties with big budgets and we are not quite in that category ;-)

tommyw - do you have any names of pool surfacers to avoid?

We had another quote today for pebble tec that isn't the pebble tec brand - it is called Wet Edge Satin Matrix. He said it is just as good as Pebble tec. Have you heard of this and is it comparable?

With tile replacement the bid was $12,000 - getting closer to our "blind" budget of $10,000 that we were willing to invest in the pool.

We also have to replace the automatic pool cover that lasted exactly as long as they said it would - 7 years!

DH is going to see if there is any negotiation possible.

We will definitely check this firm out - they came highly recommended and seem to have everything in order but you can never do too much checking up.

... as a follow up ... the experiences I mentioned were folks who went with the lowest prices ... the companies they used all went out of business. Also, IF your plaster is not totally gone, you may consider doing an acid wash followed by a diamond polish. It made my my 25 yr. old pool look like new and can be a DIY project.

I know this thread is old, but I just payed $5120 to resurface with PebbleTec. This is for a pool with an 80' perimeter. I am in Sacramento, CA and Adams Pool Specialties did the job and they will be back today to acid wash and then I can start filling the pool!! They also included free tile cleaning with the bid. I would definitely recommend them!
