kitchen layout feedback

18 years ago

Hi - I just found this forum and my wife and I are hoping to remodel our kitchen soon, and we're looking for some feedback on our current design! You can see the proposed layout at:

http://sites.google.com/a/emnett.com/test-site/Home

(look at the attached pdf file on the page)

Here are some notes about the design:

The top half is the dining area, the bottom half is the kitchen, and there is currently a wall separating the two. Our living room is to the left, there is a hallway on the right, garage door on the lower left, and a patio through the doors on the top of the picture. We are planning to remove the wall between the dining room and kitchen to open it up a bit, and add a small peninsula/bar up against the wall.

Starting with the refrigerator in the lower left corner we have the following for base cabinets:

* 36" counter depth refrigerator with cabinets on top

* dishwasher

* 33" sink

* 36" lazy susan corner

* 18" drawers for utensils

* 30" gas stove

* 9" pullout for spices, etc.

* 36" drawers

Starting against the wall in the lower right we have the following for the wall cabinets:

* 33" 2-door cabinet

* 18" glass door cabinet

* 3" space

* 30" hood

* 3" space

* 18" glass door cabinet

* 24" space with cabinet on top and GE spacesaver microwave mounted underneath the cabinet (leaving normal gap between bottom of microwave and counter)

Then for the peninsula we have (starting from the left):

* 18" prep sink

* 30" drawers

* 18" trash pullout

* raised bar area that extends out the back

We have 8' ceilings and we're planning to use 30" wall cabinets to leave some space at the top, and for the floor we want to put down oak flooring that matches the original floor in the dining and living rooms (if that's possible).

Thanks for any comments!

    Actually here is a pic, that is probably easier than the pdf:

    I'd like to see you get the fridge out of that back corner to make it more accessible to the dining space and, additionally, the outdoor patio (if you use it for barbecuing, etc.). It would also be more accessible to anyone in the living room who needs to access drinks and snacks without disturbing the kitchen workspace.

    Actually, what about leaving the fridge where it is, but moving the peninsula to the other side? This would allow traffic coming from the garage to go past the kitchen instead of through it, protecting the cooking area from being invaded, and avoiding the dangers of having anyone squeeze past the cook at the hot stove. I would just slide the whole thing over (toward the dining space if possible), leaving the prep sink where it is, so you have plenty of prep space between it and the stove.

    We originally had the peninsula on the other side, but the door opening is a little closer on that side so we had to push it in further to make sure there was enough room for chairs and people to walk through. It seemed by moving it to the other wall we could get more counter and cabinet space overall.

    The garage is just a tiny one car garage full of boxes (1941 house in California hehe), so we don't use that door very frequently.

    We are also hoping there is enough space between the stove and peninsula for someone to walk by while another person is cooking. Maybe we should reduce the size of the peninsula if there isn't?

    I like rhome's idea of switching the penninsula to the other side.

    It's not that you don't have room for someone to walk behind the cook, it's just that it can be a traffic jam. The way your layout is set up, prepping will take place at the penninsula so there will be quite a bit of back and forth across the only entry into the kitchen. This will block off the fridge from anyone who wants a quick drink or snack. Moving the penninsula to the other side will give a more sheltered local for the cook, and much more access for someone to snack or set the table while the cook is at work.

    Thanks for the feedback! What does everyone think about this new plan? We moved the fridge to where the peninsula used to be and added a small pantry next to it, and moved the peninsula to the other side like you suggested. We had to change the drawers on the right of the stove to the spice pullout, and put a blind corner in on the left side of the stove to leave enough room for the bar. (The icon there isn't right, the ikea software doesn't have a blind corner of the right size.)

    We also have a version where there are no cabinets on the peninsula and it's just a bar area with a pole/legs of some sort supporting it.

    I like that better. I had the same concerns about the pennisula in the other location. You actually could think about opening that blind cabinet from the pennisula side ...mb with a deep pull out shelf. That is, if you don't want to lose that space and can think of something to put there. I think that the refrig location will be better as well. My architect/kd said that refrig should be on the periphery of the work triangle since it is the only part of the triangle that every family member and most visitors use...want to keep them out of the flow of the work area when visiting the fridge if at all possible. This does it as well as you can.

    Hi - we started measuring out the latest design in our kitchen, and I think in order to leave enough room for people sitting at the peninsula and walking through to the hallway, we have to remove the 9" spice pullout (on the right of the stove in the pic), and this only leaves 12" on either side of the stove. My wife says this makes the area feel too cramped, and someone standing at the stove might interfere with someone standing at the sink.

    She really wants an extra seating area for guests, so we're trying to make that work but having a hard time finding space for it. It seems the peninsula has to be on the opposite wall (like in the original design at the top), since there is a bit more space there before we hit the doorway. We could swap the fridge with the 36" drawers to get it to the periphery, but that limits space around the stove and makes the wall cabinets more difficult.
