Master bedroom redo

I would love advice on a mini master bedroom redo. I never fully intended on a redo but kept "happening upon" things I loved. First, a pair of vintage damask curtains with pinpleats in true green for $1. Yes, $1. Next, a thick, super soft duvet for $20.95. The duvet is a white background with vines of pinkish red strawberries and true golden daisy like flowers. There are two greens in the vines, a deep green and an apple green. The scale of pattern is overall smallish medium. Lol. The greens of the curtain are not a perfect match but I prefer that. Next, a bright geometric print, like canes chairs, sheet in exact apple green of duvet for $.50. Lastly, a vintage lamp base
reminiscent of a figure 8 but in more of an aqua green and flecks of gold for $5. For $1.39 I got an oval drum shade in a light golden Brown basket weave pattern.

Now it seems like this is coming together but it isn't really. Currently my bedroom is painted a neutral burnished bronze with a hint of green undertones. It is a very grownup, traditional color. The furniture is a mix of country farmhouse styles, antique black armoire, almost black green sideboard turned nightstand with burlap door curtains, and honey oak four column post bed. Floors are
concrete, double patio doors, and a large basket weave and brushed nickel semi tropical style fan.

I have a quilt that I want to continue to use as one side is patchwork and other, side I prefer displayed, is medallion medium size print in pinkish red. The quilt has more of a Moroccan feel and the duvet is more vintage or retro. One is very grown up and other is more traditional. My daughter says styles clash. I love both and know I would never be happy with either styles on their own and wish I could figure out how to incorporate each. Btw, the quilt has a liitle gold and green but it doesn't stand out much.

So if you have made it this far, am I fighting a losing battle? I want kind of an anthropologie or urban outfitters eclectic look. I am trying to get away from the traditional look somewhat. Any tips?

Is there way to upload instagram photos? My computer is in shop so I can only use phone pics.

Please if anyone would like to see pics and has instagram, I am kahlanne. I did a collage of all the fabrics for you to look at.

I don't know about instagram. Can you move your pics from there to someplace like photobucket and upload those? Here are the directions to do it - if it's possible from instagram, these should help.

    Is this it?

Yes that is it. Thanks so much.

The duvet is bottom left, curtains are top left, top right quilt, and bottom right is sheets. You can't really see from photo but there is a little bit of green and gold in the quilt. Also, the curtains are not near the bed but across the room on the patio doors.

I know the duvet. The pattern was in fact called "Strawberry Patch" and I had it in my last bedroom in my parent's house - my mom made matching curtains from sheets and my grandmother made a beaded floral arrangement that was strawberry plants in a terracotta planter that hung in the corner. It may have been by Wamsutta? We're pushing the trivia now. LOL

Unless you are looking for a very unfitted Bohemiam look, I would say these are not working together and I'm not sure I can see them with the wall color you have described. I can see the first two being part of a Bohemian mix, but not really the Strawberry Patch and the green sheet. I think those work together in a brighter mix There is a gold in the Strawberry Patch, but I don't think it is enough to pull together the bright, clear colors in that and the sheet on the one hand and the heavier colors of the drapes and quilt.

Bohemian isn't really my thing, so take that or leave it and if that is the look you want, find someone else who can better help you, but I would say you might be in a pick two situation and then look at using the others in another room or rooms. MAYBE three if you did the duvet, used the sheet to make a trim some white curtains or a pull-down or roman shade (even just piping, a band or tiebacks) and/or make shams or a toss pillow and then used the quilt folded at the end of the bed or on a stand across the room -- I'd have to see it IRL and see the room. I just can't see the damask curtains working with the others. It's a very heavy look while the Strawberry Patch is very light and clean, clear colors.

Thanks so much for your help. Yes, I think I AM going for a Bohemian look even though I didn't realize it until you called it that. I just don't know how to pull it off. You are right that they things are competing right now but I have seen photos of interiors with both bright and formal used at the same time and it works but how? Strangely I almost feel like I haven't pushed it far enough so it is still at that in between ugly stage. I felt the same about my gallery wall around my living room tv for the longest and almost gave up. It wasn't until I added many more things that it felt completed and made sense. (The gallery is a collection of mostly thrift finds but a few expensive artwork pieces. Several watercolors, a 70s tramp art frame with gaudy art, ceramic owl sprayed white, two gold Home Interior leaves , yes HI...lol, couple of crochet pieces, oil paintings, framed yo-yo quilt piece, and a few other more beginner paintings. All with different frames yet it works in an out of your mind but I get it way. Lol. Anyway this is tmi I am sure but I wanted you to know I will consider your tips if I decide to eliminate something. Until then, anyone know how to push these for a pulled together Bohemian look?

Well I have to admit that I am not of the school of thought that believes if you like it, it will somehow go together. The four fabrics posted would be a real challenge for the most skilled designer to integrate. It's hard to pass on a bargain, but a hodgepodge of disparate elements are no bargain, regardless of cost.

Use the top two together or the bottom two together, but not all.

I get what you're going for, but that's not going to do it. The tones don't match, the colors don't work with each other, and no matter how bohemian you want it to look, it will only look muddled.

I love the two bright, light fabrics. Add in another bright and you've got something.

My mom always told me never to mix more than 3 patterns, and so far, she's been right.

What occurs to me is the quilt and draperies seem very dark, warm and wintery, while the duvet and sheet are bright, cool and summery. The colors and weights of the fabrics seem too disparate to work well together. I think your daughter is right.

Here are some really well put together Bohemian rooms from Houzz. Maybe you can see why they work well.

Here's one more place to look..see how they've put together the colors and appearance of textures in their bedding? There is something very cohesive, even though there are a gazillion colors in some of them. If you look for bargains that work with your quilt and draperies, in rich colors that complement what you have (and save the greens for another room or time), you'll be on your way.

    I love the boho look.

I am not sure I understand all the items. top left - curtains, bottom left duvet. what are the other two items?

The top right is quilt which I fold at bottom of bed and the bottom right is sheets which don't have to be seen once made. They match the duvet perfectly though.

One thing I don't want to happen if I use the duvet and sheets and not other pieces is for the room to have too much of a childish look or even too retro/modern. Hints yes but just enough to be fresh and cheerful but still eclectic and grownup. So many traditional styles are too stuffy or expected for my home. I was hoping the curtains and quilt would add that traditional element to "age" or ground the room.

Oh and I don't mind repainting but I would need to know which direction I am going before attempting to choose a paint color.

I thought the green plaid was a single sheet you had to make something out of. If it is a set to sleep on and you don't leave them exposed when you make the bed, they could be purple for all it would matter to the look of the room.

So as far as the finished room's look, you just have the three? I can't see how you can pull them together. As pointed out above, the Bohemian look tends to have a consistent color tone or quality (most often bright) and some control on scale. It is really hard to tell which way the quilt might go or whether it could go either way, but I just don't see how you can pull the drapes and the duvet together.

If you like the brights but are afraid of it looking too youthful, don't do the white eyelet with it that I had as a girl, but you might do some white tone on tones or texturals. Use your white for texture and play to the saturated tones in your other choices. Stay away from the gingham, ;-) Maybe go for some drama -- a deep green for the wall color, pick up a rustic or aged white in a headboard, side table or something. Use dark metal finishes to play to a vintage feel. Instead of damask curtains, if you don't want white what about something in the burlap or natural silk/linen look? Could be panels or a shade. A wood shade would work too.

I haven't done anything like this -- it's just an idea on the direction I would try if you want to continue playing with those fabrics I think the curtains need to find a different room. Or the duvet does. I go back to my pick two.

Glad you are getting some more input. I hope someone can spark a solution for you.
