Do you have ghost screens?

We have jusr replaced a number of our doors and windows. Most of the windows don't open. The rooms all have French doors. Have any of you had experience with the new ghost screens on French doors? Do they work well?

By "ghost screens," do you mean retractable screens, like a shade but sideways?
I have one for the French door out to my deck, but only one of the three opens. I needed one there because I have a pet bird and did not want him to escape or anything else to come in after him. So far so good -- it has been 3.5 years.

We have Phantom Screens on 4 sets of our French doors. Love them! They work perfectly for us. Out of sight when not needed and easy to use when they are needed.

I don't have french doors but we just put in a storm door with a ghost screen and I can't say enough about how much we like it! I had my doubts at first, but you simply cannot see the screen unless it comes down, and even then it's a nice, firm fit so no critters can get in!

I'm not sure how french door windows work with the ghost screens, but if you can get them to come down from the top it would be better because pets can't hurt it.

Thanks for the responses. I guess phantom screen is another name for them. Sis 3 mentions that she has them on French doors and they work well. She is pleased with them. Do you know the brand name? I understand that some are flimsier than others. I just hate having lovely weather this time of year and not being able to open the doors at night.

lesleyintn "Phantom Screens" is the brand name for the retractable screens we chose over quite a few others. They have a 98% customer satisfaction rating and a lifetime warranty on everything but the screen mesh so I am not worried about longevity. In any case our installer said that in 14 years he has serviced Phantom Screens he has only ever had to replace the mesh, usually where a person or a pet has charged through them! You do have to get used to them as they are almost invisible.

I have attached a photo of one set of our French doors with the screens in use, which is the only time you can see them at all. Like you, we love to have as many doors and windows open while we can and these screens make it seem that we are living outside (bird song, fountain splashing etc) not to mention the fresh air and breezes. They aren't inexpensive but I think they are a great solution. All of our French doors fitted with the screens are out swing but they can be used on in swing doors just as easily.

Could you use these on a front door with sidelights? We don't have a storm door or screen door, sure would like to have a screen there to leave the door open during the summer. Thanks.

The frame of the screen may have to fit to the side walls meaning it would screen the door opening and the sidelights when in use. The total width of your door plus the sidelights may then be the issue, if the total is over 48" or so, you would probably have to have 2 screen doors. However I suggest you talk to Phantom (or any other retractable screen company you wish) to ask how a screen door would be installed for you. I am sure that it is feasible to have a retractable screen at your front door and very nice too. I have included a link to the entry doors page of the Phantom website.

Here is a link that might be useful: Phantom Screens - entry doors

Thanks for the link. I tried looking at specs, but PDF links on the spec page didn't work. Can someone post closeups of how these are mounted? I see it says they roll into a channel that's mounted on doorframe, but just can't picture it on an entry door since the door seems to fill the frame inside and out - which is why I don't think we can hang a regular screen door. Thanks.

I have a retractable screen on my patio door. I'm in a condo complex where there are double doors, but one doesn't open. There also wasn't a molding to attach certain sorts of screens.

I got mine from Home Depot and it was a bear to install, but it's been in for two years and I haven't had a problem. My next door neighbor got hers from Lowes and it was junk...after a year, it wasn't retracting strongly and the screen was coming out of the guide track at the bottom.

I can't remember the brands (we discussed the purchases at length). The company that made mine was just a three letter name...like initials.

We are looking into the same thing for french doors that go out side to our back yard. I found they are really expensive (to me any way) but probably are worth it. The phantom screens, i think, are going to cost more than the doors themselves. The company we are ordering our doors from recommended them to us them and I have not looked into other options yet.

Just FYI we paid $2400 for 4 pairs of French door screens. Two pairs of doors are 8 feet tall.

These are brilliant, I've wanted them since they first came out, but, have they strengthened them to keep cats, dogs, raccoons, etc. in or out?
