Interior woodwork

I posted this in the painting forum and started thinking maybe it's more of a decorating question so I'm cross posting it here...hope to get some opinions. Thanks for reading...

We are having the interior painted with SW and the painter told us when selecting a color the top colors on the chart strips usually just look white on the walls. We want to do a contrast color on the pop outs on the walls and the doors and baseboards. If we pick the # 3 color which is called utterly beige and drop down to the # 5 color for the contrast do you think the woodwork will appear too dark? The painter suggested dropping down 2 colors for the contrast. Right now everything is white and I am sooo tired of white, but don't want too pick something too dark. He said if we only drop down one color for contrast it will appear almost the same as the walls. This is confusing, any opinions would be appreciated.

I think you should get samples of the paint colors you're considering and try them out.

I do not agree at all that the lst two colors look white on the walls. They might in some cases, but not always.

Here is a link to the paint colors you're looking at.

I do think it is dark for trim. There is no reason that you can't go more than two shades lighter for the trim. You could go three or four shades lighter and it would still work. I have done this.

Still, I think you should get samples and see what look you like.

Thank you so much for taking the time to look up my colors, and I do agree we are going to have to get some samples and put them on the walls to see what is going to work best. Just the idea of painting the trim anything but a light color is kinda scarey!

Arizonarose, when I built my home almost 2 years ago, I knew I didn't want white trim, but didn't want a dark stain either. I had the walls painted a medium warm tan with the baseboards/doors 3 shades darker~~I love it! At the time the house was under construction, all the workers commented how classy it was, and that's a man's point of view. ;o)

patty cakes, do you have any photo's you can post? I would love to see how this looks. Do you get a lot of sunlight? We get ALOT of sun here so I'm not worried about the house being too dark, but I'm afraid it may look garish if the baseboard and doors are painted too dark. I think the pop outs will be fine dark, but the rest....not sure.

Not much to add except be sure to purchase the paint that you think you want and test it in your home. We just had our upstairs remodeled and the designer only used a fan deck to pick the wall colors. I later painted samples in my house, in my light and ended up changing 4 of the 7 colors. I am very glad I did!

I also do not agree that the lightest colors on a card will show as white. That is not the case at all. In fact some "whites" show as color when they are on the walls. An example of this is BM Patriotic White. It shows as pale blue, not white.

Light colors can look amazing in bright light. Go with your desires but be sure to test the colors first.

I am thinking that hiring a color expert is not such a bad idea.

Darker trim can be wonderful. Go for it and post pictures, please.

Yes, we are going tomorrow to get samples of the colors we are contemplating. I will post pics when it's all done. We are scheduled for the end of May as our contractor is so busy right now. I can hardly wait!!

Arizonarose, I have pictures, but haven't posted them on a site yet. I looked at the SW colors and can tell you the walls are very close to Whole Wheat, and the trim/doors may be a tad darker than Baguette. It's definitely a warm tan, not taupe or brownish. It's best if both colors are on the same strip cause they'll have the same tone, just one darker and one lighter. It's very unique, and the many compliments i've had tells me it must look good.

Yes, I have a very sunny home, but in the evening the colors look goldish, giving the rooms a beautiful glow. I have large ceiling fixtures, but prefer the ambience of lamps with low wattage bulbs, and gold or black lampshades.

Don't be afraid, go for it! ;o)

OK, I like that color strip...it's one we didn't get. The colors don't seem to have the pink in them like a lot of the beiges/browns do. Decisions...decisions....

I prefer table lamps and low lighting too. Have lights in the ceiling fans that are never turned on.

Thanks for your help with this and when it's all done I will post pictures.
