Granite PAIN!

My granite slab broke today when they were taking it off the truck! It was a nasty rainy day, maybe they slipped, I don't know the details. But I'm so sad! I thought I would be coming home to my new countertop! The cabinet guy was scheduled to come Friday to install a counter sitting cab and crown molding, fridge and dishwasher scheduled for the weekend, we are SOOOO close!

I'm not sure I want to drive down to see the next slab, it's an hour and a half one way, and this would be slab viewing number 3! The first got rejected, as it had a fissure in an area hard to work around. I loved the way both 1 and 2 looked. Do I assume number 3 will be just as pretty? It's Bianco Antico.

Thanks for letting me whine! I know you guys sympathize!

    Oh the humanity....

Well, as a BA owner, I can tell you....no 2 slabs are alike. I don't care what they say...."oh they are pieces that were next to each other, blah blah blah." Nope. I liked BA, wanted it, didn't pull the trigger one Saturday. Two hours after leaving the granite yard the sales gal called me to tell me someone walked in after me asked for BA and bought the 2 slabs I was looking at. I was "in like" with them but not Love. Then on Monday she called me to tell me the next slab was revealed and it was more brown and creamier, like I was hunting for. I went over to see it and guess what? My heart started beating faster and I just knew this was it. Went in later that afternoon and paid my deposit. The rest is history.

    So, you gotta go. Sorry.

    Good Luck.

I think you should go also... But next best thing, can they email you some hi res pictures? With a pic you may be able to tell if the new slab was a close neighbor of the broken slab at least.

I'm feeling your granite pain. Just this week I went to the fabricators to finalize my layout and when I looked the slabs over (was confused about how they looked on the large screen), I realized that my second slab was a mess. I don't know if they dropped it or if someone rolled over it, but it had little divets and cracks all over the bottom half(this was not obvious to the eye - I needed to touch it to realize the problem). I had to walk away :o(

I had picked my slab out at the distributor and was told that the "sister slab" behind it was the same (in reality it was close in color, but different). They refused to move the fist slab and said that the fabricator would review it. For whatever reason, the fabricator took the slab and was ready to cut it for us. When challenged about the shape of the stone and whether they had a warranty on it, the fabricator said it wasn't their stone so no they didn't. Shortly afterwards, they said that they wouldn't want it in their kitchen. I'm not going to use it. However, I'm now so disappointed. We tiled our floor to work with this granite.

Go check out the slab - look closely at it and touch it! Good luck.

Oh no! If I were you I would insist on seeing the slab before installation. Good luck with it!

Thanks everybody! Yeah, I gotta go. I like Sharonite's idea of a photo, but I didn't see that flaw as much as I FELT it. Thanks for reminding me about that Missmuffet! I hope you find your slabs soon!

Bee, could you give your stone a little pat from me? Thanks!
Someday soon I'll have my granite!!!!

    Pondlily,

"If it weren't for bad luck I'd have no luck at all!"

(((((((((((((((((Irish luck for a good slab of BA)))))))))))))))))))))

This may be a BLESSING in disguise. Yes, it is terrible
and I know you really, really, really wanted to come
home to a pretty countertop. My wish is that the next
slab is even more fantastic than any of the BAs you have
seen. This next one is going to be the WINNER.

Thinking of you and sending good Irish St. Patrick's day
    luck you way.

pondlily--I hug it every day, I'll make sure it knows tonight's hug is from you.

Thanks Boxer you're so sweet! I know it's a little blip in the road, and I am thinking positive! Thanks for the pep talk!

    HeeHee, thanks Bee!

Tomorrow afternoon I will see slab number 3, hopefully the new winner!

Well geez, have them at least pay for your expensive priced gas for the next granite viewing. You can always ask...er, demand. This coming from a real WUS with nice advice.

Sorry that this has happened. I had multiple nightmares when going through my kitchen reno. Especially when my "bubba type" granite guy drove off with my Shaw's farmhouse sink saying he was going to another job two hours north and then would get back to his shop with my precious sink...a little later. I just knew he would run off the road or something and I would get a call saying that my sink was on life support and there was nothing else they could do. LOL!

Keep the faith...it will end soon.....and all be okay.

hugs to you for what you're going through,
    pup

I feel your pain too closely! Same thing happened to me 2 weeks ago. It broke on install. The fabricator said she'd find the same lot from the same place where the granite was mined (if that's the right word...). It wasn't, so I did my driving this past week, found a stone with similar colors and glitzy mica chunks, as well as an entirely different stone (a beautiful quartzite) that also could have worked with my 90% finished kitchen - - - and that got me thinking that maybe the stone broke for a reason and I was meant to have this quartzite - - - but ultimately went with the same look as I wanted in the first place. And with a more expert fabricator. Don't want this happening again!!!

So yes, you need to see it yourself. Do not rely on photos, or your fabricator, or anyone else telling you about the stone. Heck, don't even rely on the people at the stone yard who tell you the stone is fine, when your hands and eyes tell you it's got too many fissures. Trust your gut!

Oh, I am so sorry. When they brought our granite over I hid in my bedroom because I was so nervous that it would get dropped or cracked when they moved it in. It turned out ok, but I would have been heartbroken and my DH would have been furious if it had been dropped.

Thanks guys, it's nice to know I'm not the only one! I know it's only a little thing, but it's delaying other things, you know! I'm getting the DW today so at least that's some progress!

Definitely go see the new slab. I took a piece that the granite guy picked out because he was purchasing for two clients. It had pits in it & fissures throughout. It never has had a nice high shine the way I expected it to. It's been 5 yrs & it still bugs me. I should have said something right away but too late now.

So sorry Jersey! I did go see it and this slab had pink tones that the first two didn't. I almost said OK and thought I could just live with it, but I really didn't like it. But I said no, and I'm waiting for another slab to arrive. What's another week or two at this point?
