What is the matter with the plaster?

There are different types of pool. There is rubberized latex which lasts usually 3-5 years. There is epoxy which lasts a lot longer but the cost is substantial. You cannot use one then the other without sand blasting.

You also can't plaster over paint so, in 3 years, when the paint is chalking off, you'll bear the increased cost of preparing the pool for the inevitable plaster.

I dont paint or reccommend painting pools. A costly and neverending maintenance issue.

Don't do it. The best epoxy paint when applied correctly (which is very hard to do) will only last 6yrs. It takes at least 7 days of 0 precipitaion weather and a pool with no weepers to properly acid wash, TSP, prime and paint a pool. Read the detailed instructions before you make the decision.

Racket, I do my own plasters (no plaster subs here) and can't remember the last one I did for less than $6000 cdn. Labour and overhead, sheesh this is an expensive area to live in. I also charge a minimum of $2500 to remove paint. The only people I see painting pools here are those looking to pretty up their pools to sell the house. I regularly get calls from people 3 or 4 years after they bought a house looking to plaster a previously painted pool.

Bite the bullet and plaster, $4100 is cheap in the long run.

You may want to consider acid washing and then a diamond polishing to the existing plaster. If enough old plaster is present and not badly cracked or loose it can really look good.
