Should I keep or return

these candle holders? Are they too delicate looking to balance out the vase on the other side?

Though I like the vase, I'd keep the candle sticks and find somewhere else for the vase and move the candle sticks to that side. You have a lovely room.

justgotabme, thanks. Why would it look better on the other side? Also would you leave the lazyboy chair side empty?

You're welcome. I was just thinking if you only have something on one side it should be the left. Now if you lived where they write from the right to the left I hear it would be the other way around. Ofcourse you could always find something to replace the large vase with.
I like both the chairs there.
Love your little tufted ottoman too.

I really like them and the vase but something seems off to my eye. I think the stems are a little too skinny. That being said, I personally don't think they look bad there but think chunkier candle holder would look better.

I agree with Shee's comment about the thinness of the candlesticks--not a bad thing, but the vase is so much bulkier, the combination with the candlesticks creates a little bit of imbalance IMHO. The vase also seems to be much more colorful than the other elements on the mantel or hearth, so the eye is drawn more to it--perhaps one reason why justgotabme suggested placing it elsewhere? All are really beautiful pieces though.

I'm not sure if others follow this rule of thumb, but I find that when I'm arranging pairs of varying heights, I like to have the higher element closer to the center of the room or focal point, so that the eye is drawn inward rather than outward. For that reason, I'd put the taller candlestick nearer to the fireplace opening. Of course, all rules are made to be broken.... And unfortunately this may not have been the info you needed. Your chairs by the fireplace look very inviting!

justgabme, I would like something on both sides, I tend to like balance. Thanks again for your suggestions.

shee, that was my thought too, they might be too skinny. The other thing, it doesnt show in the picture but I have two accent tables on each side of the chairs that also echo the skinny stems, not sure if that ais a good thing or not.

suj, I will reverse the candle holders to see how that looks, that is a good suggestion. I thought perhaps because there are two of them that might equal the weighty look of the vase. I wish I had another spot for the vase because I really like it but I see what you mean by being more colorful than the rest.

I think both the candlesticks and the vase disappear into that stone ( the mirror piece is great, but the lighter item on the mantel have the same problem.) You might think about picking items that are more colorful to stand out against the fireplace. I like the vase, but it would be shown to greater advantage in another spot.

What does that light green vase look like on the mantel?

I think the problem is that the taller of the 2 candlesticks and the vase are almost the same height. Something needs to be taller here. Maybe try something shorter on the vase side and move that vase elsewhere or find something so sit that vase on so it is much higher ( at least 6 inches) than the taller candlestick. See if the different heights make it look more balanced.

ideefix, I guess without seeing the rest of the room, it is hard to see that there is a lot of color going on in the room, especially with the area rug. I didnt want to take away from the rug or the stone by having items that were too colorful. I wanted the items on the fireplace not to be the focal point thats why I chose the more quiet pieces, except for the vase I guess but I could turn around, it is mostly black withh some green on the other side.

rafor, thanks but I dont think it is the height so much an issue for me as I specially looked for something that was close to the same height, to me that makes it balance. It is the width of the candle holders I am concerned about maybe they are too narrow. The more I see them though I like them..lol

    I'm with rafor.
For me balance isn't about height, it's about mass. So to "balance" that set of candle sticks you need something shorter and wider but of similar mass. The vase overwhelms the candle sticks- I would do vase + large clunky yet low bowl/sculpture/whatever, or candle sticks + smaller, wider bowl/sculpture/whatever.
But vase + candle sticks isn't working because one is so dense and the other so light.

I would rather see something like a holder with wood or kindling in it or a set of fireplace tools to lend some veracity to the idea that its a fireplace, and thats it. Then keep the decorative objects for the mantle piece.

i like the candlesticks with what is above the mantle better than i like the vase with those objects...something about the vases' style doesn't "go with" the starburst mirror and the other 2 items on the mantle....

Thanks everyone, I have decided to keep the candle holders and look for something different for the other side...I'll be looking for you opinions again.

How are you able to see the pictures. What am I missng?
    Please clarify. TIA

cab3014, sorry I dont understand your question, what pictures are you talking about?

If you are looking for the castle look, then keep. Otherwise, they don't seem to go with the rest of your decor (as much as I can see anyway). To me they look like they belong in the Adams Family movie. You asked.
