I love it! Maybe that's because I have a square of the same tile resting on my counter at this moment . . . I've been unsuccessful in locating a decorative tile we used in this house 5 years ago -- it seems to have disappeared off the face of the earth. This one struck us as a possible substitute in the new house . . . I think it looks nice with both your countertop and cabinets. You have my vote!

I love it! What is your countertop? It looks very similar to mine that is coming on tuesday!! :) (Blue graphite) Your new backsplash would look great with my granite! My cabs are a bit darker, so I want to lighten up a bit with the backsplash. Will have to go to Lowe's, hmmmmm maybe Monday...

We got ours at Expo . . . you might check HD to see if they also carry it.

The granite is Uba Tuba...apparently the #1 color chosen by men! Ha! The cabinets are natural cherry---so they will darken over time. Thanks for the thumbs up. I am going to STOP LOOKING and just use this. It is a lot less expensive also. Yippeee to that. So, would ya use any accent pieces or inserts?? I am thinking just use this as is and be done with it??
Do they make replacement outlet covers that look nice over the stone??

love the backsplash...will look great with cab door colour.

Question, what thickness in your counter?
Here in Canada, 1.5" edge build up is the norm and I find it too bulky looking. I like yours.

Like it very much -- It's just right for your space.

    Another yea vote here!!!

Very nice! And yes, they do make outlet covers that would go better with your backsplash. I did a quick google search under "stone look outlet covers" and came up with the below link. They have tons of colors, I picked the multi slate obviously for yours. You can see the choices under "stone selections". A disclaimer, I don't work for them or know anything about them, it's just the first website I happened to pull up! :) Good luck!

It looks a lot like ours except for being all the same size (ours is 2x2s and 4x4s in a mosaic) -- bet yours costs a LOT less, too (ours had to be custom made to get the mosaic we wanted)! Love the look of the slate with the granite! I know you can buy stainless steel (essentially gray) plates, but I know we were told at the time we did ours that you could buy slate outlet covers. We never pursued it and have just left the ivory ones (and gotten used to them) but if you wanted to Google it, I'm sure you could find them... though you might end up spending almost as much for them as for the backsplash! ;)

That is so funny! I saw the same backsplash last week at Lowe's and almost bought it. I was afraid it would be too dark with my black countertops, though. But it's beautiful!

Hey, it's just a bigger version of mine! I have the mosaic slate AND ubatuba granite (chosen by my husband...LOL!). We got ours at Home Depot, Lowe's had it too but it was almost $2 cheaper per sq. foot at HD. Here's a pic if you're interested in how it looks with an enhancing sealer and your granite...

I did the backsplash myself, my first ever tiling job.

I almost used that in the 2 x 4 subway style. It's really pretty.

I'm inspired, what a great choice. I'm getting Uba Tuba with Maple cabs and a cherry floor - I'm going to save the link on the outside chance that a backsplash is still in my budget.

I really like the tile. Slate like this should be sealed once you have it installed. You can use a regular sealer which will not change the color, or an enhancing sealer which will brighten up all the colors and make it "pop" (like rmlanza's above). Both are nice looks, just depends on your preference. If you want to get an idea how it looks enhanced, just wet the tiles with a wet rag or spray bottle. Here are pics of my slate before and after enhancing, to give you an idea. Also, are you going to do any kind of decorative feature over the range? You probably don't need it because the tiles are beautiful on their own, and you don't want it to be too busy. I don't think you need any accent tiles for that reason. But if your kitchen needs a focal point, you might consider something simple - we framed a section and changed the orientation of the tiles.

drkona, I love the slate but I was thinking the same thing as needanap and rmlanza. I think if you put an enhancer sealer on it will even look better. To tell the color your slate will be with an enhancer sealer just wet the slate tile with water and that is the color you will get onced sealed with enhancer. I think it will look a little richer/deeper in color and will blend better with you counters and cabinets.

We have that in the 1" size. And oddly enough, Lowe's was $2 cheaper than HD here! Here's a pic of it in process, pre-grout- the marble is the same as the counters.

I bought a sheet of the same exact tile at Lowes...we also have cherry with uba tuba. I love this tile! However, for my kitchen, I was afraid it might be too dark. We have undercab lights, so I thought it might be okay--but I'm afraid to take the plunge...
Lowe's has a bigger selection now--I saw several tiles that would not break the bank.
Let us know if you decide to use this :)

Thanks for the replies! I am definitely using this.
Consensus seems to be no accent pieces, etc. I agree. I will talk to tile guy about enhancer. As far as a focal point behind the stove...I don't know. I am torn...there is not much space there..it is only 20" tall and as wide as the stove. I am leaning away from doing anything there. No need to call attention to my dirty stove!!

How about grout color?? Better to stay w/ lighter colors?? Maybe a tan?

Look at my first picture: See how it will come along from under the cabinet over to that window? I will need a *cap* piece across the top of the tile there..right?? Lowes had some metal strips....? Is that what I should use?
    Thanks,

I've got the same tile, only in the 1x1 size. Counters are uba tuba, and cabinets are ginger glazed maple. My grout is
called standard gray, but it looks more taupe/beige than gray. Tile is sealed, but not enhanced.

My outlet covers are the antique gray color from Vermont Slate Art. They were a lot less expensive than the ones recommended by kcinkc71. For example, my single switch was $15.00. The company uses salvaged slate roofing, so the plates have a weathered, rustic look that looks great with the mosaic tiles. Great service, too.

a friend has that same tile from lowe's and is very happy with it. she has corian, but still similar color scheme.

    Had a thought:

Would you consider putting this slate on the diagonal(like in lynette63 focal point)?? or just horizontal?
Or could do a layer on the horizontal as an inferior border(2 tiles high..), and then the rest on the diagonal??

I am leaning towards keeping it horizontal.....

rmlanza, i loved the pig on your counter. Is that just for drying your towl. I just love it.

    A couple of comments.

First, You've got some beautiful tile to use there!! It'll go well with the rest of the kitchen!

Secondly, Just an FYI-- Ubatuba is the number one pic from EVERYONE-- not just men. :-)

Thirdly, if you think the stone looks nice now, try hitting a sample with an enhancer. The difference will shock you!

Lastly, I'm going to go in a different direction on grout color. Look into a darker gray, like Hydroment's French Grey, or Mapei's Pearl Grey. In rmlanza's and Lynnette's backsplashes, see how the lighter grey shows up so well surrounding each tile? With a darker grey, you won't see that. The tile (which really is a beautiful stone) will stand right out.

Lynnette and rmlanza, please don't take offense from my comments.

I love it. I saw it at Lowes too, and wished that it worked for my kitchen, because most 2" squares of mixed slate on mesh are a lot pricier than that stuff was. Good find!!!!!

    Pretty much perfect!

I have something similar. Mine is tumbled copper slate with a sealer. Here is a picture. I am replacing the outlet covers at some point, mine are just brown. I might go with Oil Rubbed Bronze for mine. I don't have close ups.

If I had to do it over again, I would do something a little more exciting over my range, but I was trying to keep the cost down and my tile guy didn't think I needed to frame it. I think I would have preferred it or maybe if I had put some accent tiles in the area over the range...I guess in my next kitchen! In general, I love the tile -- I even used it in my powder room.

I think its great, and my dumb question # one too many is- how do you have the sample? Did you just buy a square foot of it or do they actually have samples to bring home?

They sell it by the square foot.

One thing to watch- make sure the sheets go together, both in color and thickness, and pull out the thicker/thinner little tiles. It will make grouting so much easier!

Our grout color is "natural gray" from Lowe's because it's what we used on our floors. For switch plates we used ORB. For the ends we just grouted it in, no caps or anything. Here's a pic of my switch plates. They were special order at Lowe's and go very nicely with our ORB hardware and faucet.

Igiori, thanks! Yeah, he's my towel pig. We just keep a towel on him all the time. He's a happy little guy. My kids sing the "towel pig" song, if you've seen the Simpson movie it's the "spider pig" song. Again, can't take credit for him, saw him in another kitchen on this forum and since I collect pigs, I had to find him. I was lucky to find the exact same one she had.

okay, am I going blind? I don't see the pig.

Sorry, he was actually posted in another thread, igiori must have seen him there and recognized my screen name or the pics of my kitchen. Here he is...
