Kitchen Lighting Plan - Input Please

I am at the stage of submitting my lighting plan to my contractor. I posted on the lighting forum, but they don't seem to have as much traffic as this forum, so I am going to get input from TKOs.

My ceilings are 8 feet. Please let me know if I need more or less lighting.

TIA!

I think you could shift the three that align along the left side up and match it with three aligned down the right side, and evenly space them. Then, I don't think you would need the one centered between the island and fireplace wall, and you could align the light down near the pantry with the rest.

Make sure the recessed light fixtures will handle bulbs with higher wattages so if you need more light you can put in brighter bulbs.

Mine are only rated for up to 65 watts. I had no idea that was an issue until it was too late. The electrical guy saved a few bucks and I lost flexibility.

What type of fixture are your 5" cans? Are you using 26W fluorescent or PAR or standard incandescent?

That lighting plan will do a great job of lighting your aisles....too bad you probably don't cook much in the middle of an aisle. The recessed lights should be centered over the edge of your counter otherwise you will have a shadow cast over your work surface because your head and body will block the ceiling light. Yes, I know you have UC lights, but better placement of your recessed lights will give you better flexibility with fewer shadows.

Sorry, my post above reads very snarky, but I didn't mean it that way. When we did our lighting plan with our contractor, I argued hard to get our lights over the counter edge, and he insisted that they not be so close. He assured me we wouldn't have shadows. Well we DO, and I hate it, and I wish I threw a temper tantrum to get him to listen to me and put them where I wanted them.

So I have a bit of bitterness about my light placement and that came out in the previous post.

I agree with lining up the can lights with the edge of the counter. My initial lighting plan (that the architect did) looked just like yours with the lights all spaced along the aisles. I had to argue with everyone to get them moved and unlike alku05 I won & I'm glad I did. I also moved my sink light so that it is over the back of the sink (centered over faucet) rather than the middle of the sink (to fix the shadow issues I had read about). So my lights don't line up in pretty little rows but I have them where I need them. Oh...and watch the electricians when they are putting the lights in. Even though I had a very specific lighting plan & we reviewed everything, they decided to move a few of the lights back over the aisle and line things up, etc, and I had to make them move them all and stick to the plan!

    This is/was my light plan:

My lights are all in the aisle as well but they seem to work OK for us. Yes, there does seem to be some shadow, but I find I only need to turn on the undercabinet lights occasionally. BUT, I was used to very, very little light in my old kitchen so anything is an improvement!

I would go w/Alku05's recommendation to eliminate those shadows.

Another point, note that we have a recessed light directly over our prep sink (the left corner of the cooktop wall..the corner w/the diagonal front) even though we have pendants very close by. This was so that you have a work light directly over it...not just the pendants from the peninsula. You don't have to turn it on if you don't need it, but I have found it useful on many occasions! We also have a light directly over our "mini-peninsula" (peninsula on right side of plan) for a work light as well (there's no cabinet above it so no undercabinet light and we didn't want a pendant in such a shallow location...especially as it's at the primary entry to the rest of the house from the front door & upstairs.

All our recessed lights are now 4" lights BTW, in spite of the design. It turned out anything larger than 4" wouldn't fit in the space b/w the kitchen ceiling and floor of the upstairs...so check to be sure this will not be a problem for you as well. In our case, our electrician felt we had "lighting overkill" w/the 5" so when we switched to all 4" lights he felt it was much better. We have plenty of light in our kitchen! We rarely have the recessed lights on full since they're so bright! (The only times they're on full is when I'm taking pictures for GW!)
