WOW New guy here

Wow Just let me start off by saying THANKS right now. Since finding this site I have been amazed. Searching for ideas for my eventual swimming pool and pool area here have been a pleasure. There are many fine examples of what I would love to have in our back yard. While not as detailed or fancy as some. I am getting may ideas. On second thought I might want to forget I ever saw this site. I might just go broke if I keep looking. Anyway please be patient with me. I may ask some off the wall questions here and there. I am just trying to get the right pool, equipment and options we need for our pool. Get the best price and hopefully a pool that will stand up to some I have seen here.

You will love having a pool! There are quite a few experts here to help you along the way. You are smart to do all the research well ahead of time.

I look forward to picking everyone brain. Where to start? Well I know I want either a fiberglass or gunite pool. Salt water system and good pool cleaner. Spa would be nice but not necessary. I am leaning to gunite since I have found many wonderful designs here to use as examples. From there I don't know which dirction to go? Which equipment I will need? And such. Any help or guidance will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

You do have more options with gunite, but I have seen some fiberglass pools with killer hardscape and landscaping that are gorgeous. There is a thread still on page one titled "spa or water feature" that you may want to follow. That might help you make that decision. Have no idea about equipment and such, so I'll defer to the resident experts.

I can offer one piece of advice. Pay for (or do your own if you're capable) design plans of your entire yard even if you only work on the pool part first. At least have a cohesive plan to work toward.

Not looking to have many features with our build. Do not live in a subdivision where I would need drawings and approval of a HOA. We live in rural area with little need for major landscaping. Some type of firepit would be nice. What I have is a area approximately 40x65 to sandwich our pool into. This area being between our house and our old workshop. Just built a new 40x50 shop. Our plans are to build a pool and then convert the old shop to a pool house. With restroom, kitchen and seating area. With large french doors looking out to the pool. Will also need to install a fence around the new pool. Anyone else use gunite to build walls around pools for fencing?? Thanks

we did a gunite retaining wall - and it came out really nice, after getting bids for 20-30k, the pool guys cut the wall when they dug the pool, formed it and poured gunite on gunite day (see my build on norcal new build) for a fraction of the cost (3-4k) with a veneer stone face and flagstone cap for seating. was a great way to incorporate into the yard...

I was thinking something waist high with wrought iron fencing above that to height required with a couple of gates off it. We could cover or cap the gunite with some type of stone on the pool side of the wall.
