I was told by our contractor that anything other then screen on the top of our pool enclosure would be against the building code unless it was re -engineered and this would be expensive.

Not sure who your contractor is however I would speak with the owner of the company who is installing your screen. We love our vinyl over the summer kitchen. It is tinted and provides sun protection as well as keeping the rain out. It is great sitting out there when it is raining.

There are some issues to consider in using acrylic in general (e.g. scratches easily) and, likely, the code issue is related to the frame construction which is approved for screening rather than a heavier, rigid product. However, be aware that acrylic is about 1/4 the weight of glass and 10+ the strength and it is viable for exterior use and can be purchased with UV protection--and otherwise transmits more light than glass (depending on the translucency and patterning desired).

In an interior use, I designed a feature for display of collectibles and used acrylic to reduce the weight (which was pushing 600 lbs without the six shelf structures). Acrylic has come a long way and has many uses. A caution is that acrylic must be cleaned with ample water -- wiping dust with a dry cloth will scratch the surface over time in much the same way sterling silver takes develops a patina over generations. On silver it's a good thing, on acrylic, not so much.

If you get your frame assessed for strength and any determine safety considerations, acrylic may be a good solution. No, I don't sell the stuff! But I am designing (on spec) a roof that
will incorporate enlarged gingko leaves, fabricated in metal and overlapping the same
shapes fabricated in acrylic. Cool.
