Adding a 2+ car garage to a historic home on a bluff view
Comments (21)Let me just say, this was my first discussion post on Houzz and it's been ABSOLUTELY great!!! I am very appreciative of each and every opinion and suggestion! There are SO many projects we have planned for this beautiful old lady so I'm sure I'll become a frequent flier in the discussion boards, lol! Our very first project is actually exterior paint....and we are really struggling with it! We both think we want to go with a dark main color with light / white window trim and some other accent color, or two, to tie in with Craftsman tradition. However, we are both bothered by the round columns, and tan-ish red roof. I'm also not really a fan of the shutters, but I think it's because they changed out the East / West facing windows with double pane storm windows (as you can see in the front photo, especially) and so they don't have the upper window "grilles" present on all the other original wood windows. I've used a silly doodle app on my iPad to draw in the grids and it improves the look quite a bit, in my opinion. Now I just have to find a company who makes grilles that will insert into vinyl window frames, after the fact.... Sorry for the topic change....just meant to thank everyone for their input (and I'll keep taking more!!!) Karyn...See MoreHow long does it take to adjust to a new home?
Comments (104)Kathleen, it took me moving here to realize what "home" is. Different things to different people. Also, for some, home is a place to hang their hat while they're off doing things elsewhere. For others, it's their sanctuary and they fix it up to suit their wants and needs. I never realized how much "familiarity" meant to me. I have no close friends in my previous city, but everything I did and was since at 14 is there and I feel I belong there. Others do not share this perspective on life. Had I realized how lonely, miserable and anxious I was going to be here, I would NEVER HAVE left, even if it meant a studio apartment and a broken marriage....See MoreHow can I take advantage of the "view"?
Comments (3)Nyla - you can do a lot for your architect by building a couple of ideabooks here with images of exteriors that you love. Take a tablet to the meeting and show the images. Take your husband through the images so you can hear his likes and dislikes too - he may not care, but you don't want him shooting your ideas down in the meeting. Any good architect would love that you already knew susanka and had read some of her work. Don't settle - if you can see it could be better - it is okay to tinker with it and bring back your own ideas. Great architects get into a sort of collaboration with clients - most of them are visual, so bring them images to explain what you love and you will get a better result. When you start the first meeting this way, he will be relieved that you are working to communicate with shorthand. A technical vocabulary means we hear certain words in a different way than the layperson - pictures cut through all that. When he describes a room of a certain size - go find one IRL and walk around it . . imagine the space. Your architect might be great at codes and exteriors, and just okay at space planning. Or terrific at form but forget function. Ask him what he/she thinks their strengths are and make sure you work together on a timeline that has plenty of time for your review and feedback before he goes onto the next step. Ask him to extend his normal timeline for about 8 weeks to give you guys time to digest things and bring back questions and feedback at each turn. (this will save you three months of delay and much more $ during building when you try to make corrections you didn't see coming) Two weeks more of his work hours to incorporate your input / make adjustments and six weeks that is just time he is waiting in between all the steps in the design development and plan generation process. You won't go over budget or make hubby mad then, and your architect will know up front that you will pay him to work through your ideas with you to get to the right answer for the house....See MoreWhat projects will you take on at home in 2016?
Comments (179)We are painting our grand daughters room and getting it ready for overnites!! SW Electric Lime Green. Pink curtains. Bedspread from IKEA with a princess wearing a tool belt!! White furniture. This spring/summer we will be replacing our deckboards. The deck is 22 years old and is desperate need of new boards. Can't have that crawling grand daughter get any splinters! Would like to remove the carpet from our bedroom and closet and replace that. Bedroom is 16X16 and closet is 10X10, so it may be a little too much. Our cat was diagnosed with cancer, so we have spent a lot of our remodeling money on her. We shall see how much is left....See Morec9pilot
