Another pull-out question

What about wall pull outs? Currently, the proposed design for the new kitchen has two 12" cabinets flanking my over-the-range microwave.

In my current kitchen, I have things like cooking oil, baking stuff (baking powder, soda, corn starch, etc.), and misc condiments (ketchup, vinegar, Worcester sauce, etc.) flanking the range/micro area. My spices and herbs are in the pantry just steps away. I was thinking the pull-outs could hold a lot of the cooking items - and I could make good use of the cabinets. Today I have to get a stool to get to the top shelf of my cabinets if anything is not on the edge.

I'd love to hear from anyone who has put them in. KD says she has had complaints from customers who have put them in.

I have one 84 inch high next to my fridge. It holds the cans and bottles and works well. I did a larger unit with rollouts for boxes and bags. I think that has worked better for larger items. We also use the bottom tray for potatoes and the space under the bottom tray for storing our large griddle.

Will you have any other pantry space for things like boxes of cereal?

What, specifically, were the complaints? If she didn't tell you, I'd press her for an answer.

The advantage of a pullout is that you are able to pull the entire contents out of the cabinet to not only see what you have but to be able to easier reach them. It's a lot easier to reach up for something right in front of you than to have to reach up and then over the counter and deep into the cabinet. Without knowing what complaints your KD has received, at this point it seems to me a 12" pullout would be a good idea.

It is possible that the pullouts from your cabinet company don't work very well... What is you cabinet company?

I'm also considering a 12" pull out but just in a base cabinet . . . not one that goes all the way up. Anyone have a 12" base pull out with an opinion?

I have two 6" base pullouts...be sure the shelves in the pullout are adjustable. Some base pullouts are also open on the top...also, IMHO, an advantage!

Unlike my drawers, my base pullouts are not soft-close. I'm not sure if any are.

I think there were some shown in one of the spice storage/pullout threads...you might want to do a search for those threads for more ideas/pictures.

buehl thanks for the input. I was envisioning adjustable shelves and an open top . . . thanks for reminding me to be specific with the KD. I wonder if two 6" base pull outs are better than one 12" wide pull out? Sorry to hijack the thread if that's what I'm doing.

KD didn't say specifically what the complaints were, but she implied that they had less space than expected. Today she added:

"The pullouts definitely eat up a lot of space AND they donÂt fully extend out the cabinets AND they are very expensive."

Sorry, forgot to add that manufacturer is KraftMaid.
