help on countertops

Hi--This is my first time here. I'm getting natural cherry cabinets installed in my kitchen, which has tiled floor. The colors of the tiles range from burgundy to red to pink and gray, with flecks or splatters of red. It's a complicated, interesting floor. And so I'm having a hellish time finding the right counter top. The obvious choice would be black but I really dislike that look. I'm in love with the Typhoon Bordeaux but when I came home and put pictures of the slab I've viewed, alongside pictures of the tile, they don't seem to match. My Typhoon Bordeaux slab has lavender, blue-gray and gold in it. I'd eliminate the gold but I'm not sure if even the rest of it will be too busy and/or will clash with the floor. In the stone yard, it all seemed to work but now I have cold feet. Can anyone help?

Can we see pics of your tile?

by the way, i'd love to post pictures of the tile but haven't figured out how to do so on GW. any help would be appreciated.

I'd keep it simple so it doesn't compete with the floor. I'd go grey or maybe even white to brighten it up. Soapstone or slate for gray or Quartz for white.

There are photo posting instructions on the "Read me if Youre New" thread. You can usually find it on page 1. Besides that info, there is a ton of other necessary stuff to learn there. Seeing pics of your cool tile would be very helpful.

    Welcome!

breezygirl, i just posted to the image forum (i think?). if you could please check it out?

I would stay away from dark colors and also consider silestone,Zodiaq(bu Dupont) or another synthetic quartz(can't remember the name) before making granite your final choice. I have used both in a kitchen and a bath. You have the benefit of uniformity and also even better durability than granite. The price will be about the same. There is a good choice of colors if you consider all three companies. I believe the ones I mentioned have the best choices. I also would do polished rather than honed as the upkeep is easier.

Since your cabinets are dark, and I personally like contrast between cabinets and countertops, I would go something to pick up one of the lighter colors in the floor. I prefer quartz as your floor is busy and I would want a calmer countertop. There are several grey colors that would go very nice. On my monitor it looks like there is a sandy beige color to your floors. That too would look nice and provide a nice contrast to the cabinets.

I agree that bringing out the lighter shade in your floors would look really nice. Or a gray too...

What about something totally different? A light butcherblock or stainless steel?

Your granite is beautiful but it's not a match to your floors unfortunately. Since your floors are already in, like suggested previously, I'd go with beige. Your floor is a wonderful tying element for your SS appliances, cabinets and potentially a beige or golden granite.

I'm not a granite expert but try something like Kashmere Gold, or Yellow River, etc. Also a word of caution: since your floor has so much character, try to be careful with a slab with too much movement. If you really want movement, make sure it's varying tones of identical colors.

If you're in doubt, you can post more pictures of your slabs under consideration. It's not really that hard to post pictures! :-)

    Hi Kulfi,

I am a little confused, are you going with a light natural
cherry cab or a dark stained cab. The image looked
like a dark almost chocolate cab.

Are you committed to the backsplash tile? The BS tile
would be great with a light cherry but with the dark
might make your space even darker.

Part of the struggle might be trying to match the
the greens in the tile with the red/orange terracotta
colors in the flooor. I understand better now with a
picture. This is a challenge but can be done.

If you love these colors (greens, oranges and reds)you can
find a granite slabthat could work but it will mean doing a
little work. Take both pieces of tile and a cabinet slab
door to a granite yard and search away. Bring a camera and
    notebook.
A TB (typhoon bordeaux could work but you need the right
slab). And maybe a creama bordeaux or something with
both greens and reds but with a lighter background color
to add some light to the space.

I personally like a contrast with dark cabs and counters.
But what do you like? And are your cabs dark or light. I
need to confirm before I rush you with some ideas and
    images.

    Thanks,

boxerpup, OP states natural cherry. Though it will darken some they will not be dark cabs in my opinion.
OP, since you like Typhoon Bordeaux check out some of these. Some of the reds are no busy and may blend with your floor.

Are you totally committed to the floor? I think you might enjoy a more interesting counter and a subtler floor, since having both elements busy may be too much...

I recommend a calmer, softer granite color that has some of the tones and shades of the gorgeous floor tile.

    Costa Rose:

    Costa Esmeralda Italy:

For a darker option with richer movement,

    Ibere Crema Bordeaux:

    Eanhl,
The link of the OP's pictures made me think it was darker
that was why I asked the question. I read above
"natural cherry" but viewed a darker almost chocolate
color in the link to the pictures. Might be I am
    having issues with the link.

I agree with a light to medium gray or a medium neutral beige/taupe, to be a visual rest in counterpoint to the interesting floor. Soapstone, quartz, grey granite.

Have you considered cured concrete? My brother has concrete counters - that might be too mod/industrial a look for you, but he enjoys them.

Hi, Sorry no help, but wanted to say that I'm almost in the same boat. My floors have movement, but really only a couple tones of color. Getting cognac cabinets and have TB on hold, for the counters!
Appreciate all critiques I can get!
