decorating lampshades?

I finally got lamps for our bedroom and bought v. simple white shades to go with them, but I want to 'jazz them up' a little-I attached a photo below(you may think it looks weird w/ the brown bed & black nightstands but we also have an armoire that is the same brown & a cheval mirror that is black so it's not so weird looking in person).

Options I am considering:

1. trying to find some ribbon in a pattern, like black & white toile or something, to trim around the bottom & top, and perhaps up the vertical seams where the panels join.

2. I considered covering the whole thing in a print fabric w/ a solid ribbon trim but I'm thinking that might be a bit much considering my room is relatively simple.

3. Next thought (upon searching & coming across some photos) was to cover every other panel in toile (or other fabric) with the other panels in something a lot more simple...maybe use a corded ribbon around the bottom or something?

Has anyone done this or any ideas about something that might be easy & cute? (no fringe/dangly things or decoupage please)

Thanks!

I love those lamps and I'm going to suggest that you consider getting a solid shade the color of your deepest blue/grey from the comforter. Maybe I'm not seeing it as you can IRL, but they are spectacularly elegant and simple lamps. They look great with your frames and the simple lines of your bedding. A grey silk or blue grey silk is my choice for the shade:-) I can't see toile on it, but I may be totally missing something.

Thanks- I do like that idea as well... I was just thinking that everything in my bedroom is very solid, simple, borderline boring :) and that maybe a small amount of pattern or textrue on the lampshades would add a fun touch. Also, if I screw it up, the shades were only $15 apiece, LOL.
The lamps are from the Pottery Barn outlet- they are a brushed nickel looking finish.

gotcha-- Good find on the lamps. Ok, what a bout a border in the look of the banding of the bed? so a darker blue grey ribbon edging the shade? I like the way the blue and grey will look against the brush nickle, so that's why I keep going in that direction. You could even go black with the shade or banding. You could cover them in bandings of altnernates as you mentioned (which I can't picture but sounds interesting)in grey and black or black and blue (you get the idea) silk. the silk would really look great with those lamps:-)

I would at any rate be repeating the idea of the bedding and your walls are the lighter blue, so I'd go grey or black with the banding or ribbon.

I'm still not seeing the toile, but I love toile and I have a toile lampshade in my bedroom that probably doesn't look like it would work there. Maybe a photoshopper will ps some toile onto that shade for you, or you can just wrap some around it and see what you think.

Do you have any other kind of pattern in the room?

You might want to look at more graphic. updated toiles in black and white. That might work really well with your lamps and the bedding. Ikea has a lot of the fabric I'm thinking of.

Do you have to change the subject each time your reply to something on this board? I keep getting rejected for already having a follow-up with this title..

Anyway, I love this idea of using the 2 colors in fabric or ribbon, will hit the fabric/craft stores with a pillow sham this week! Thanks.

yeah, I don't know why it's doing that-- but it's getting me, too.

I hope to see pics of your shade after you get it done- It will be so pretty in there!

Verrrrry pretty room! So calming and relaxing..........
I can see matching either of the blues of your bedding in a simple velvet ribbon. The velvet would add an elegant, simple, unexpected touch. Grossgrain would be too rustic (for lack of a better word). Silk ribbon could also be nice .... but I'm seeing velvet.

decorpas, I have learned that if someone does not reply after your reply, you can not post again unless you change the subject since it looks like you are posting an identical subject. BUT if someone replies after your reply, you can keep the same subject.

I like the room just as it is since the white shades match the white curtain rod and gives a peaceful feeling.

I would look for a print pillow for on the bed in the center, instead of the solid one, if you want to add a little pattern.

I think a darker lampshade would be nice, and I would also change the shape. The one there is a very traditional shade, on a very modern lamp. Something more like this would be a better fit, imo, and the color would not get lost against the white sheers on the window. Maybe something like this:

    platinum drum shade

However, if you want to keep the ones you have, then I would look for some pretty ribbon in the color of the dark stripe in the bedding, and put that around the top and bottom of the shades - nothing up the side seams.

Your room feels very restful, and a nice balance of feminine and masculine.

    Thanks for all the advice/feedback!
I have actually been trying for 2 yrs to find throw pillows for this bed but unbeknownst to me, this color blue is found nowhere else but Restoration Hardware, LOL. Maybe this summer I will take the initiative to try to make my own pillow(s) if I can find some fabric that works!
I also agree about the drum shade but will probably stick with these for now & try to find some ribbon.

I appreciate all the advice and I'm glad to hear that what you can see of the room comes off as intended (masculine & feminine with a restful feel- we moved from close to the beach to far from the beach & I was trying to create a somewhat beachy restful room for my husband, who really misses the beach! One friend described it like "being in the sky" because the wall you can't see is almost all windows w/ white curtains and the ceiling is a tray whose sides are painted in the blue as well... it is the only room in our house I think I've done a decent job decorating, LOL)

One way to match the colors would be to take your solid pillow and stencil a design on it w/ white fabric or craft paint. Voila! Custom design!

Or you could take a white pillow and do a stencil w/ matching blues custom mixed from craft paints. There are several web sites that give you color mixing recipes that you can play around w/ to get a custom match.

I found a site and was able to mix my own perfect shade of robins egg blue for a project. I printed off the mix recipes so I would have it for future projects. So easy!

If you find ribbons in shades you like, you can sew a design onto a plain pillow using the ribbon to make swirls or waves or geometric shapes. Easy to to w/ hand stitching or fabric glue.

Or you could puchase white shell buttons and sew them onto your blue pillow in a nautilus swirl.

I agree with Les, that despite the shades looking nice in white and in that room, a drum shade would look nicer and go better with the modern beautiful look you are trying to achieve.
