New Pool Quote - Comments?

Hi All,

After many years of vowing we would never have a pool, we decided over this summer to take the plunge! Our boys have all learned to swim well, and my husband and I are more comfortable now with the idea. While doing pool research, I came across this forum, and am hooked! Have spent the past several weeks reading the various posts, and looking at all the gorgeous pictures. Have definitely have learned a lot.

So far, we have looked at fiberglass - loved it, although we didn't think their largest model was large enough for our yard (we're on an acre). Looked at vinyl - liked it, but didn't loved it. Then we met with a high-end pool builder, and loved what he had to say/show us, except for the price!! We could send one of our children to college for that price!! Sadly, I though gunite was out of reach, until I came across this large, family-owned pool builder here in South Jersey. There were some positive posts about them here in this forum, so I gave them a call. The salesperson spent a few hours with us, discussing pool construction and the various options, and I have to say, I was impressed. Following is the quote he gave us:

Is this too good to be true? Comments? Concerns? Am I missing anything? Anything you would change? My husband and I have never owned a pool, so this is all new to us, and we want to get it right!

Many thanks.

Sounds more than fair, we were just slightly higher for all of ours, but......then you add the decking, the fencing, the landscaping, the sod, the top soil, the lighting, etc and you may as well add another 30-40% of the pool price. We also added a pool house so we more than doubled the price of the pool. We are in Northern NJ. I would do the dig, plumbing, gunite, coping, electric this fall and winter, then plaster in the spring. We did and were swimming in May. Good luck!

    Hawkfive -

We just completed a build with this same pool builder...located in Mt Ephraim, right? Overall, the process went well with some small hiccups along the way, but you have to expect that. If you would like more insight on the process, do's/don'ts with this PB, e-mail me at smuggsw38a@comcast.net

thejimbar - Thanks for your reply. Your pool is lovely! We too are considering building a pool house, actually more like a pavilion, with a powder room, storage room, and a covered outdoor fireplace. Just another line item on the excel spreadsheet!

I noticed from your other posts that your pool has a 3M colorquartz finish. Are you happy with it? I'm having a heck of a time trying to figure out which finish to go with - there are not many pics on 3M's website, nor on this forum.

We would love to start construction this year, but doubt that will happen. We have to apply for a variance, due to the various setback constraints we have on our property (corner lot and septic system). With any luck, we can be at the top of the que in the spring.

Absolutely not, your potential builder sounds a lot like me. Bid 'em to get 'em and you'll always keep your numbers up as long as your delivering quality product.

If this was for my home here's what I'd take on your quote.
    base pool 39750
    - 50sqft 18" raised spa 6100
    - Aqualink 4-button & PDA remote 2150
    - 400,000 BTU LX Natural Gas heater 2700
    - (2) Add'l Jandy color lights for pool - $1550
The end result is a large pool with all the awesome goodies. I'd consider the ledge if you have little ones but I'd call the price high, offer half for it and tell them you'll close the deal. They're making out OK on the other upgrades.

This is a SWEET pool for the low 50's.

    See ya,
    Kelly

huskyridor - Thanks for your input. I noticed you didn't include the 3M finish. I must admit, I'm not completely sold on this finish. There's not enough info/pics out there to make a decision. On the other hand, with all the beautiful PebbleTec pools on this forum, and PT's website, I would seriously consider that. This PB doesn't do any pebble finishes, but may be willing for me to bring in my own plaster person to do that part of it. Should I pursue that?

Oh, and the ledge - that's for mommy!

You don't need the spa side remote AND the PDA. One or the other. The Aqua Palm will take the place of the the spa side or the PDA will serve as the primary way of doing things. 4 function remotes are old news and not reliable after a few years.

You may hear that the PDA is slow but that is for the older firmware. V3.0 has the fix for getting the response time to a normal speed.

I would never drop that kind of upgrade coin on a quartz finish.

repairguy is correct, you can do without the spa side remote and they do go out after years in service. But they gave you a very sweet price on it and I'd jump on it!!! Then do without it after it fails. Putting a water feature, pool light, spa light, and blower on it is awesome for an instant reward while seated in the spa. You don't have to wait for the system to boot up to energize your choice from the handheld.

hawkfive, by your post it almost sounds like you work for the company. I had a pool put in by the same company recently. I would agree with Smuggs, overall things went pretty well but there were plenty of small bumps along with way. In my opinion, the biggest difficutly is the lack of professionalism exhibited by the employees. They always talk to you like you are bothering them.

In defense of the hands doing the work, they come across that way because they have a job to complete.
This should never happen with the office staff, superintendent, or the owner himself. Their job is to converse with the buyer.
