Kitchen is pics 7-10. Underneath, its a good workable plan with a definate, unique style of decoration.

Here is a link that might be useful: NYT - and its a rental.

WTF with the lopped off curtain next to the stove?!!

Wow! That really looks like so much fun, but who would want to clean it?!

Did you notice that the kitchen table and counters are completely free of clutter?

linelle, LOL, better safe than symmetric!

    mama_goose, better bare than dumb-looking. :p

Awesome crazany-ness decorating isn't it? He could come do a little consulting at my house - I could use a shot of fun but not quite so much quantity.

I see an episode of Hoarders in his future.

Yeah, he could have just skipped the curtain on the stove side. Then he would have had enough barkcloth for matching dish towels. ;)

    LOL, marcolo.

That just hurt my eyes. Wouldn't want anything to catch fire so let's just cut off the curtain! LOL! Thanks for the laugh!

    Love the sink though!

    Oh, my.
How could one have any peace in all that visual noise?

    Wow.

I think my eyes just threw up - if that is possible.

Hideous is the best word I can think of.

Who would want to look at that every day?

    Um... Whoa.

Well, I wouldn't want to look at ALL of it, every day, but I love the energy. And I have a 27 yr old cutie-pie son of my own, who I would much rather see in a 1920's jacket than a 'Queers' t-shirt.

Cool kitchen, nice to get beyond those boring sterile white ones of the past.....

I kind of like the retro, vintage, kitschy vibe but heavens, if that didn't wake you up in the morning I don't know what would! The lopped off curtain and the wallpaper "plates" border above the windows(only!) are a hoot!

Darn it - he stole my thunder. Now no one will be impressed when I reveal my McDonalds French Fry Box Cabinets.

Not to my taste but neither is sterile white or country cute or any number of other styles. When it comes to living space I'm a firm believer that everyone is entitled to have exactly what pleases them for whatever reason without justification. I applaud anyone who knows what they like and isn't afraid to go for it.

Gosh, I read the gw comments before I looked at the pics, and I was pleasantly surprised by the kitchen. He does need a little more space for all his stuff, but I thought it was fun.

I can agree that unique and special is preferable to sterile or builder's blah. I wonder if our responses might have to do with age or stress level. I might've liked more aspects of this kitchen in earlier years. But now life is busy, and the house is busy and cluttery enough without wild colors and intentional clutter. With 8 kids (mostly teens) and 3 dogs I don't need 'visual noise' to add to the regular kind. ;-D

I am in search of simplicity, organization, and a peaceful atmosphere these days, and that's not it. Particularly lately and this morning, I've been stressed to the point of exhaustion and walking into that kitchen, I know, would just make me feel worse, because it's 'yelling at me.' That yellow, alone, would be obnoxious, but with the red, it's beyond. Some of the details I could even like today, just not all a-jumble.

I love the whole place, and I bet he's a hoot in person. Thanks for posting, bmorepanic.

He's definitely one of the cuter things in there. I do like it a lot--as a visitor. The kitchen curtains are a hoot.

BTW, I'm guessing the writer is about 23 and at least mentally dropped college history. It miiiight say "All the way with Adlai," but "I like Ike"--never!

I love the sink too kaijuto!

I also like some of the funky picture frames. However as a whole, it would be way too much for me. (And my home would be way too dull for him, I'm sure.)

I do really like that he found many of his items at rummage sales and places like Salvation Army. So much more unique and greener and cheaper than buying all new stuff at RH or Pottery Barn, right?

Thanks for posting the link. Better than caffeine. :)

Not for me but I like it.

I think the amputated curtain fits in with the general idea.

If the cabs were with a white frame and black doors, I bet it would be way cuter. The strong colors make the pretty bs and island get lost in the shuffle. It is too much visual clutter for me. I'd take those plastic magnets down asap as well. Just too many.... and too much for me.
BTW - I am not a fan of sterile or staged type houses. I have magnets on our fridge, but not as many or as wild in color. I like quirky and fun but think this veers into manic.

    Ayerg73: LOL.

Hey, if you're gonna go... go BIG! He's got some groovy stuff there, though. I wouldn't mind snabbing a couple pieces out of his house.

Absolutely stunning! I just love when a space oozes personality. Love, love, love getting a jolt of spirit in a space. Even if it's not mine. It seems he has a lamp problem like I have a chair problem. So many great ones, not enough space! It would be exciting to see his taste evolve over time: At what point will he learn editing? When will he find a new way to go over the top? Will a focal point ever enter his aesthetic, or will sensory overload always rule the day? Either way, bound to be fun. I like fun.

Of all the elements, I think the window coverings work the least: both the miniblinds and the curtains (colors/patterns).

Fun to look at---but I wouldn't want to live there.

Yikes! I like color...but I guess not that much of a bright, WAKE UP color. You wouldn't need as much caffeine in the morning, walking into that kitchen :)

    A RENTAL? Seriously?

I love that youngstown sink. And I'm glad he talked the landlord into keeping the original tile...

If we all liked the same things, 'twould be a boring world.

I am so grateful he is not our tenant!

He was also featured in a story on RetroRenovation.

He wanted to find an apartment that was original mid-century and unrenovated.

He has a lot of stuff, but somehow he makes it work.

I love his taste. Knock it back by half and it would be very liveable.

Gsciencechick, what a great article. I loved it!!! Thanks much for the link

'I wonder if our responses might have to do with age or stress level. I might've liked more aspects of this kitchen in earlier years.'

probably so. my first apt I put a rubber chicken on the door handle of my fridge. handle was open at the top of it. chicken open at the - ah - bottom of it - lol! I just slid him right onto that handle.

the 'china' (glass front) cabinet in the kitchen was lined (decorated?) with empty vodka bottles. I didn't drink it - but one of our party goers drank a lot of it. I must have made it his museum now that I look back... actually, I had nothing else to put in it.

today at 40 some yrs later... my eyes just hurt looking at all of that.

I don't think that person likes a basic white kitchen.

I love it!! There's definitely an eye for proportion and space, even though there's not much of an editor nor off switch. I've seen a lot of neutrals gone bad where nothing worked together and everything looked sad. This one has too much vibrant color and pattern even for me, but when you look at classic NY decorating, most of it does. It's just that this one is '50's baroque rather than fin de siecle or true baroque.

    Thanks, B'more! That was great!

He likes it. That's all the counts.

It's no worse than that apartment will all the pugs sitting allover. He just prefers pinups.
