Time to Pick the Backsplash

Well, we are just about done. Everything is complete except choosing the backsplash and painting.

Here are a couple of pictures.

Cabinets are Cherry, Chocolate w/Mocha Glaze, granite is Peacock Green, Floor is neutral light beige, appliances are stainless steel, faucet/knobs are brushed nickel. Molding/Trim is white.

Any suggestions on backsplash type/color/size/anything!?

We really are open to any good ideas for the backsplash as far as materials, color, finish.

Also, feel free to suggest paint color as well. The dining area has a Saybrook Sage accent wall, so the kitchen color definitely has to go with that and the areas just outside the kitchen are Powell Buff. I know if we just paint the Kitchen Powell Buff we can't go wrong, but then it does match the hallways as well. A little boring, but definitely safe.

The other thing about the backsplash is I'm not sure where to start/end it. You can't exactly tell from the pictures, but the cabinets end before the wall in corner to the right of the fridge (that big window goes too far to the left to have put cabinets all the way to the wall), so do we end the backsplash where the cabinets end or go all the way to the wall (another foot or so) and if we do go all the way to the wall, then do we just paint that open spot above or backsplash all the way to the ceiling (in that area to the right after the cabinets end).

All ideas are appreciated.

OOOOh I really love your kitchen. I especially like the window wall. If it were mine, I would definitly go all the way to the ceiling on the window wall. Shouldnt give opinions tho...I still havnt picked a backsplash and we have had our granite since November lol. Im a loser. I dont want to commit. Im scared when I do it I will see somthing else out there that I like much better. Anyway, I will probably just go with a crackle finish subway tile, with a different pattern over the cooktop. A subway tile would look good in your kitchen too, maybe in a different size like a 2x8. Also, a cool glass in a 4x4 or bigger. There are some new ones out there by "Mirage Glass Tile" in a 3x6 subway. They have a 4X12 tile that is New (really cool). That would look great I think. Check out the colors Fog, gray sky, ocean spray, and silver spring..lol. Sorry Im getting carried away but they are really pretty. Im not sure what color your granite is. So many choices to choose from, its hard to pick just one. Are you doing them yourself?? If someone is doing them for you, they will be able to tell you where to start and end when they come out to measure. They usually know how to do it so it will look the best. Well Good luck and I cant wait to see what you pick and also to see what others pick for you.

Check out Jodi's fire and ice tiles by Jeffrey Court. Her backsplash is beautiful and would look awesome in your kitchen.

    Colleenkay,

Thank you. The only real minor error I'm kicking myself over is not having gotten a slide in range. Can't really (economically) change that now anyhow.

The granite is Peacock Green (it's a fairly dark green with a good amount of gold and some reflective chips in it).

Thanks for your ideas. With the relatively small space below the window and between the top and lower cabinets, a subway tile might be nice. I had seen another thread with some ming green subway tiles and that might be a little interesting. Anyone thing that might work here?

We are fairly conservative, so we probably won't do anything too bold, but I don't want to go too boring either.

I think for the paint, we might just do something in the Barley area.

ni_2006, I did find fire and ice on Jeffery Court's site and it does look quite interesting. I just found Jodi's pictures as well. Just for reference, it's here:

Wow, that color scheme is almost identical to mine.

    Keep the ideas coming!

LexLuthor (love the name) ... I just replied to your email but wanted to mention that Fire and Ice is not what I would call "conservative". Once you put it in, expect lots of attention! It really makes a statement. :-)

LexLuthor ... On another post you were wondering about wall colors so I decided to create a mock-up of your kitchen with Fire & Ice along with some wall colors.

The open wall switch area looked a bit raw so I added a switch plate and I straightened your photo.

This is BM Saybrok Sage, the color you were wondering about in another post.

    Generic gold.

    Generic gray.

    Hope this helps.

That's some great work. We actually have a Saybrook Sage accent wall, so the kitchen won't be that.

I'll reply in the paint thread with a further request.

    Thank you.

The fire and ice is too bold for us.

What do you all think of this? It's a 4x4 tumbled marble in 3 different colors and some glass inserts.

You can see the granite, the floor tile and the cabinet wood in the picture with it.

This particular glass insert really goes well with the wood, I think.

Also, one place told us that we'd have to seal the tumbled marble/travertine and probably do it again every 5 or so years and another place said it comes pre-sealed and you don't have to. Maybe it comes both ways or maybe one of them was wrong, I don't know.

Do you all like the 4x4 tiles or 6x6 tiles for the 18" or so area between the cabinets and countertop?
