My mother used to make it too....she used Jellow cooked pudding mix in vanilla and chocolate and layered them in a stemmed pudding dish.

Is the chocolate also pudding, or a layer of hardened chocolate? There used to be a packaged dessert mix like this; Vanilla pudding on the bottom, pour into a serving cup and chill, then pour a chocolate shell over the top that came from a foil packet. It would harden when cooled. It was very good: have not seen it in years.
