I often bake communion bread....as do others at our church. I feel that a heavy dark bread reminds me of what holy communion is all about....I think of bread like might have been in that day. But in all actuality, that bread would have been a matzoa...unleavened, because they were celebrating the Passover.
But I know others just bake a bread machine mix in a free form loaf.
The point is in the gift or your labor.

Does your church have a standard recipe that everyone uses? At our church, everyone who makes the bread uses the same recipe:

Communion Bread

3 cups warm water
3 pkgs dry yeast (6 3/4 tsp)
Mix in bowl allowing yeast to dissolve

1 cup honey
4 1/2 tsp olive oil
Add to above, stir

3/4 tsp salt
8 1/4 cups whole wheat flour
Add and mix until flour is wet

Put dough on board and knead for 5 minutes. Place in bowl, cover with a damp cloth and let rise for 2 hours (should double in size).

Punch down once, knead briefly. Roll out to 1/4 inch thick. Cut into 5 inch diameter circles, etch a cross on each one, place on ungreased cookie sheet.

Bake at 375 for 10-14 minutes. Take out of oven, let cool and store in ziplock bags. Freeze for future use.

Makes 18-24 loaves
