IKEA Penthouse Thread #2

The original thread shows "Post Follow-up" at bottom of page, but then it is blank. I cannot respond to post. Even if signed in. Other threads are normal. Can anyone else see it correctly? (Linking Thread #1 below)

htnspz, I agree with you in that most one can only go so far with IKEA merchandise. They used furniture and lighting from the store. We had a penthouse on the beach in Destin for years, and it was not decorated in IKEA. The hot tub on the second floor deck (2 stories) was our "fun."

jeanninepc99, I think you missed the point. It was not meant to be compared to the regular, run of the mill designer show houses. btw, the artwork propped so low on the headboard in your first photo - although pretty in the photograph - is impractical, imo.

Thank you, Newdawn.

Sorry to hear your IKEA experience was not stellar, bellaflora. DS had Ralph Lauren bedding and his curtains were black-out we ordered online. DS moved from Alabama to Chicago for college, and time was short to located and find/buy/furnish his apartment in the few days we were there. Considering we had no idea where else to shop (we did look at Marshall Fields, Bloomingdale's Home, Crate and Barrel, Pottery Barn, Lazy Boy, etc = too expensive for him at the time). We did buy some things at Bed Bath and Beyond, Wal-Mart and Target. What more could he need for his college days than IKEA? He had no problems with his furniture and still has about 1/2 of the pieces. They are not in bad shape and have never fallen apart. Maybe we are just better at putting things together - none of his pieces look like 3rd graders did the work. Everything lined up, opens, closes, etc.

Show houses aren't about being practical, though. They're about creativity and raising money for charity (the one I'm involved with right now benefits an emergency shelter for battered women). People usually come (and feel good about paying $20+ to attend) when they see exciting, unique designs. :)

I looked at the article about the place again and saw that it was all done by one designer...it might have been more fun to see how different designers would have used Ikea goods in an apartment.

I couldn't comment yesterday, there was no comment box...thanks for re-starting this.
I wanted to say I enjoyed seeing this- no IKEA close to us and I've always wanted to visit one-
AND...just watched 9 by Design and loved it!

I'm a little confused--I've never seen a practical designer showhouse, although they're often fun.

Personally, I like ikea kitchens but find the rest of their stuff to be extremely variable in quality (tending towards junky, mostly), but then I think a great deal of what is passing for design right now looks like it came from ikea anyway, so I suppose it might as well do it for real and save some money. :)

Our Ikea things haven't fallen apart either, including our Hallarum kitchen and bath (and laundry room, now that I think of it--but they all look very different, even though we used Akurum kitchen cabs for all) and our Pax closets with our custom doors. Not to cast aspersions, but it very well may be a difference in quality of the construction...

And who's to say that creativity necessarily has to involve throwing loads of money at expensive furniture and such? For me, creativity can as easily be, say, sandyponder's kitchen as it can be Christopher Peacock's. In fact moreso. (and side note: those art pieces above the bed are a bit inadvisable even as 'inspiration', IMO)

The penthouse space is beautiful, and the IKEA furniture works so well with it! I think what I like is that the space takes center stage, versus the furniture, which is a REALLY great way to approach staging to sell!

RE: IKEA quality, I think it's iffy, but what isn't? We bought some dishes there and they've chipped very easily. On the other side, my DDs have dressers from there and they've held up well for the past 4 years. Will they be an heirloom? No, but that's OK! We also have a wall lined with their bookcases in the LR and have had no problems. I love that it's all been customizable.

I think a combo of IKEA, antiques, and vintage items would be perfect!
