Microwave Drawer: pros vs cons

I'm trying to decide if a microwave drawer is worth the extra cost. Does anyone have advice? Thanks!

Ours is one of our favorite things in the kitchen. (We have a Sharp, like lots of others here on GW.)

    Pros:
keeps MV off the counter / doesn't obstruct view of counter like MW installed in upper cabs does.
Easy to access / view from above (no bending over to load or retrieve items.)
    Fits 9x13 pan
I much prefer the looks of it compared to on the counter or over the counter MW.

    Cons:
If heating a bowl of liquid, filled close to the rim, it might slosh a bit when opening the drawer.
Have to bend over to see top of the interior for cleaning.

For us the pros much outweigh the cons.

I haven't had anything slosh even with a couple of things I filled closer to the rim than I'd planned, and any slosh would be an easy wipe up.

My only negative is the price. I now it's "new" technology (4 years? was new but getting close to ancient by some standards), but I expected the price to come down as they became more popular and less unique. I think they would sell a lot more if they put them into the price category of a typical built in.

I had a Sharp countertop convection micro that I had for 16 years with one repair. If this one does as well, I'll stop griping about the price. In 13 years. ;-)

It was more than worth it though -- it solved a number of layout challenges, works well, fits in a spot that functions well and has nice features -- including some I didn't know it had when I ordered it (keep warm and sensor reheat are two most used)

I asked the board about this yesterday and everyone is VERY in favor it seems.
I wasnt planning to spend this $ but we need a new microwave anyway. I was going to put it in a cupboard niche at first, above the counter but then decided to go below and it really just makes sense to do the drawer.

Im pretty short and the idea of pulling out hot things over my head has always bothered me, so I know this will be a huge PRO for me.

The fully integrated look will pay off as well i think. At least Visually!

    Another pro:

If you have to stir something part-way through or just need to check it, just open the drawer, reach down & stir/look, close the drawer. No need to take the food out or reach deep inside to stir.

If you're tall, there's a lot less bending over or squatting down than a regular MW in an alcove.

Sharp makes them all...so if you see a much higher priced Dacor, Viking, etc., know they're basically the same. The only differences are the exterior "look" and some rearranging of functions. There might be an "extra" function on some of them, but then you lose one of the other functions. My recommendation is to purchase the Sharp, not one of the re-badged.

There are two sizes: 24" & 30". They're exactly the same size inside, the 30" has more filler.

Oh, and the newer ones are a bit taller so you can fit a tall coffee cup (20oz?), but the rest of the dimensions are the same (width & depth).

BTW....Here are the two current threads discussing under counter MWs. Both include pics and/or discussion about MW drawers.

Thread: type of microwave for in island?
Thread: undercounter microwaves - pics please?

Cons: Do you have small children? Wait until they nuke their favorite stuffed animal and you have BOTH an inconsolable child AND a wrecked microwave on your hands.

    This is just non-sense.

Unless all your appliances are raised so small children can't turn them on.

BTW: Isn't a child old enough to open the drawer MW,put something in,close it and start it know they are not supposed to nuke favorite stuffed animal? I have a large extended family with lots of little ones some with MWs place under counter and have not heard of this.

Any MW mounted under the counter would have that con....as would a gas range or rangetop (controls in the front), wall oven, DW, etc. The worst being the gas range/rangetop and ovens...more dangerous situation than a MW oven, drawer or otherwise.

Almost all appliances today have a "child lockout" option, if you want to use it...including MW drawers.
