Sinks not centered under a window?

I am still trying to get a working plan for a kitchen...The best idea would be to have a corner sink, but the expense to move the plumbing may make that cost prohibitive. We are looking at have the sink cabinet not centered under the window, but the KD tells me I would hate that. Right now I have a double bowl undermount that is 3 inches off center and it has never bothered me. I would like to get a 13/4 bowl and move its location slightly, but the plumbing stack would not have to be moved, saving me a good deal of money( approx 700.00.) I have seen only one photo on the forum of an off-center cabinet and sink. Are there more? It would really help to see it in photos and not just the KD drawings. Thanks.

If the window is very much bigger than the sink, I don't think it would look odd at all. My old house just bothered me b/c the sink was larger than the window, not centered. Now I'm stuck with a too-small window again but at least sink is centered on it (though window is not centered b/t cabinets). Look in the FKB for large windows.

I agree that it depends on the size of the window. If the window is large and the sink toward one side, that has not bothered me, and I tend to be a symmetry person.

It depends on a lot of factors. In my current (not long for this world) kitchen I have a 35" window not centered on a 48" sink. It doesn't bother me. I'm getting a 48" counter height garden window centered on a 30" sink, and if that were off center it would bug me a lot.

I've had galleys where there wasn't a window anywhere near the sink, or one in the end wall to the side of the sink. Facing the wall isn't the horror that some people make it out to be, especially if you're not hand washing stacks and stacks of dishes. In general, while you're working at the sink (or at least while I am working at the sink) the eyes are focused on the task at hand anyway.

The real problem is how unentered windows look. Sometimes to keep the outside looking right, or because there's no way to move the window, or whatever, the sink is off kilter by a few inches. That's the kind of thing that will bug you if you let it. If you let it go no one else will care either.

And if it's off center by at least a foot, it's jazz. It's on purpose, right? To take advantage of one angle of the sun and protect your eyes from 100% sun. Or something like that...

Footballmom, here are a few different shots of ours.

Mine's not centered either. Readily visible, even from this angle.

Here is a link that might be useful: top photo

I don't have a photo at the moment, but my sink is a large single bowl and is off-center similarly to how elizpiz's farm sink is off-center. It aligns with half of the window. I like it, especially as the previous sink was only a few inches off-center and seemed weird; now it seems intentional. Added bonus (I'm not sure how to describe this): when I look out the window I'm looking through the clear glass rather than the spot where the glass is framed by the sliding panel.

In my previous kitchen the sink was off centre by approx 4 inches - I NEVER thought about it - until I started planning the reno - and found GW - too much info can sometimes be a bad thing. Needless to say - in the new kitchen the sink is centered.

You guys are great! The window is just 36" and the faucet would probably be centered. It is a 9 panel window, with 3 equal panes across. The sink will possible be place in the corner... I hate to spend the extra money for the plumbing....Grrrr. Three KD and they still cannot seem to solve the problems without it costing me more. Problems they probably should have know about before we replace all of the windows and siding as we could have moved the window easily when that was done as we had 2 doors and windows reframed to accomodate other things before the Kitchen design was completed. The cabinets are sitting in the warehouse and many will need to be reordered, but it will be done at the KD expense. I am just getting so tired of all of this. If we hadn't partially demo'd the kitchen and family room, we probably would keep what we had( ugly as it was)

Hang in there! It will be GREAT when it's done and you'll forget all of the tough stuff you're going through now.

Mine isn't centered and I don't even have a window. I wanted to use every square inch of my small eat in kitchen.
I was able to fit in another cabinet and still keep 42 inch isles. In a perfect world maybe it would bother me but I had to do what was good for me. I know what you mean about plumbing cost! We originally were going to eliminate our dining room. But plumbing costs and load bearing walls prevented that. Sometimes you just have to do what you have to do.

Mine's way off center. Same thing I couldn't afford to move the plumbing and the dishwasher electric. Please ignore the mess in the photo.

The way off center doen't bother me at all. I like looking out the window from both directions.

My sink is not centered under the window now and probably won't be in my new plan. Workspaces and functional cabinets come before symmetry.

I'm working on the plan to remodel my son's kitchen, and the thing that bothers him the most, is that in trying to center the sink under the window, the previous kitchen didn't leave a large enough prep area in the corner between the sink and the range. In the new design, I'm going to center the sink under the right hand side of the the slider window instead of the entire window, which will provide a larger prep area.

I found the same thing worked when laying out the lights and cabinets in our new kitchen. There doesn't have to be symmetry, but it does look better if there can be balance, and if sub-parts are lined up!

Mine's not centered either, so I cheated and put the main faucet in the middle to give it a sense of symmetry. Not a single person has mentioned it, believe it or not:

Slowly piecing together a budget kitchen reno on this hovel (with a perfectly centred sink):

Putting more of a premium on the practical things that the current kitchen doesn't have (venitlation, counterspace, usable storage, flow) I can't seem to center the sink.

Current evolution of the layout (using a 1.5 bowl where the faucet is behind the small bowl so faucet will be more to the right than pictured):

    {{!gwi}}

I have sort of put the symmetry issue out of my mind but I have been a bit concerned. Thanks footballmom the discussion has been very helpful. I think it will be OK as planned but I am going to give the single sink with an off centred faucet some thought.

Mine's a few inches off center too:

I didn't think of this until I read it. Oh man! Hmmmm? I am putting in a bigger (6 feet wide) window and my sink would be all the way to the left. Hmmm? I wonder if I should center it. 6 feet is a big window so do I just center it smack in the middle? sorry didn't mean to hijack but you brought up something I didn't even think of. I think the post so far look great so maybe it's not that big of a deal.

A window that big and a sink will look fine to one side - esp. if gots down to counter. You get a nice view from prep area then too.

My sink begins about 4" left of the window. I would have to give up my peninsula on the right of the sink in order to center it and that is my best prep workspace. The workspaces and the cabinets are used everyday; the fact that the sink looks somewhat funny from a decorating point of view only bothers me once or twice a year.

I was convinced that I should center my sink, I wish I'd done what I wanted to do instead of listening to the "symmetry freaks". As it turns out my sink is assymetrical like Alku's, so the faucet isn't centered anyway.
The downside for me is that having "symmetry" dictated the cabinet sizes. I have two impractically small cabinets on either side above the sink. I should have put the sink to one side or the other, because then I would have had a decent-sized cabinet over my dishwasher, instead of one that is too narrow to function well.

Cabinet "logic" is the exact reason why we deliberately didn't center our sink either.

ours is off by a few inches too. never bothered me

I have a galley kitchen and am happy not to have the sink under the window. It gives me a longer counter. The sink is on the end.

    Hi footballmom,
My 30" sink is 2.5" off center in front of a 54" wide window. It does not bother me at all. I minimized the visual impact by (1) not choosing a window with a center stile, (2) not bringing my window to the counter, (3) choosing a low-profile faucet, and (4) placing my soap dispenser to the right of the faucet (the faucet is centered on the sink, and is left of center relative to the window).

I think it depends on the person. We had a related issue, which was we had two windows, one in the kitchen, and one in a butler's pantry that we are annexing to the kitchen. The distance from the bottoms of the windows to the counter varied by a couple inches. I knew it would drive me nuts, so we're closing up one and replacing the remaining window with a larger window.

That being said, I think all the posters above did a fantastic job using the off-symmetry to their advantage. But if you think it will drive you crazy, it probably will.

In my old kitchen the sink is not centered on the window. The KD pointed out to me that it is asymmetric and I have never even noticed it for the last 20 years. In the picture of the new reno kitchen, it is still not centered due to the dictation of the dishwasher placement on the left and enough room for the pull out trash bins on the right. The sink is 30" off centered on the 58" window, probably about 3"-4" more to the right.

Bet most folks won't notice it either.

Budgeteer's isn't noticeable, maybe b/c of the shape of the sink and the curved sink divider? Morton5's would drive me crazy, no center stile in window but the gazebo roof looks centered and the sink doesn't LOL.

I don't know if the butler's pantry window (no walls b/t?) would bother me, but what drives me crazy is all my receptacles are different heights from the counter (2 that are inches apart are off by about 1/8", and I want to put a shelf above so it will be noticeable, hoep I can wiggle one up and the other down). That is going to be a *real* pain with 7 outlet/switch covers (and I don't know if the one with 2 GFCIs and 2 switches is level) if I don't fix it before we put tile b/s in.

Ours will not be centered, either. It wasn't before our remodel--it was a little to the left. After this remodel, it will be a little more to the right. FWIW, I didn't even realize that it was off-center, until I kept trying to fit it in my IKEA planner, and it wouldn't let me. I went into the kitchen, armed with my trusty tape measure, figuring I measured wrong, and lo and behold, my measurements were correct. The sink was not centered. How did my eagle-eye miss that for 13 years? LOL.

I was a little freaky about my new off-center sink at first, but now I'm over it. I think, even with an apron front sink, it will be fine, as long as it is within the frame of the window.

In the kitchen I just gutted, the sink wasn't centered. I didn't ever notice but the KD pointed it out. If my new sink is off center like the previous sink, it won't bother me at seeing how I didn't notice to begin with! :-)

Ajsmama, you know I never even noticed that the gazebo emphasizes that the sink is off center in the second picture. I guess the perspective on the view outside shifts as one moves about the kitchen, even a little-- the gazebo appears to be to the left of the faucet in the first photo. I guess another reason it has never bothered me is that I don't look at this window straight on from a distance in my layout, and if I'm actually at the sink I'm taking in the whole view of the garden and woods.

Like many others here, I was oblivious to my off-center sink for more than a decade until I realized the asymmetry when measuring for new cabinets. I briefly considered using a blind corner cabinet in order to center the sink, but the loss in functionality wasn't worth it to me.

Well, I have decided to get the Ticor S405D sink. There is no way to properly center this sink in a cabinet as the bowls aren't equal sized. I have been looking at the photos of FKB people who have this sink and the faucet sits in the little indentation between the two bowls. It will probably center the faucet under the window. The off center thing bothers my DH, but with a faucet centered, who will notice the sink?
