Progress on Kitchen

We are far enough along that I wanted to post some thoughts and PICS of our new kitchen in progress. We started in January getting our ideas together and I wanted to thank members of this board for their input. We knew the contractor we wanted to use based on seeing a couple of kitchens he had done for friends. We got cabinet quotes from 3 designers and ultimately went with a local custom cabinetmaker - Kline Cabinets in the Indianapolis area.

Budget 50,000

Cabinets - Kline custom cherry in honey w/Blum soft close hardware

Granite - Verde Butterfly

Flooring - 2 1/4 Red Oak - site finished

Windows - Pella Architect series

Appliances - GE Profile / Monogram (DW) - Stainless

Sink - Franke Fireclay - Matte Black

Faucet - Grohe Ladylux cafe

Can Lighting - Halo Line and Low voltage

Pendant Lighting - Besa - Mia MiniPendants

Demo started March 10 with removal of cabinets and vitrolite tiles from the walls. We ultimately had to remove the plaster ceiling to address a structural issue discovered after a metal drop ceiling was removed. Had to get a structural engineer involved and strengthen the ceiling joists (Think $$$). Electrical and then ultimately drywall went smoothly - in fact taking out the ceiling probably made it easier to place the can lights. We also insulated the exterior walls - no insulation in the home (circa 1945).

Lessons learned (so far):

It is more of a mess than you think - Seal off doors and air returns.

Plan for the unexpected - We allowed a 20% contingency within the budget.

While you are at it - you will make decisions to expand the scope of the project - and it will cost you. We did the dining room floor in oak "while we were at it".

Cabinet hardware - look at the Blum hardware - their soft close hardware is great.

Low voltage dimmers (Lutron Maestro) are expensive.

Think Drawers - we never would have considered them before looking at this site.

It will take longer than you think. At every turn we have encountered something that either requires a decision, something that we need to address, or a problem / issue that needs to be addressed. An example was that we needed a couple of new electrical breakers - but we found they are not made anymore. Had to locate someone that had new old stock and order them - took a week.

I would guess we are 75% done at this point - Granite template is Monday, install 10 days after that. We are excited to see the progress. It has been a very positive experience (except maybe microwave dinners).

Wow that's going to be a pretty kitchen! I love the green...very soothing, and yet a great highlight to the wood (green is so nice with wood isn't it?) Keep us updated!

Your cabinets are just beautiful. It will look wonderful with your choice of granite. What a pretty kitchen! Are you keeping the original stove or has it seen better days?

Stove was a 40 inch GE that had seem better days. If it were a classic O'Keefe & Meritt we would have kept it - but this one was a later vintage stove bound for craigslist... GE Profile going in its place.

updated photos - cabinet installation complete

Wow, can really see it coming together with the new cabinets in.

Think you'll get it finished up fairly soon then?

Your kitchen is looking great. I've seen Kline cabinets at Clark's near Trader Joe's in Castleton. They are nice cabinets. We want a nice, good quality kitchen cabinet, but see no advantage for paying more if there is an equivalent alternative. I am meeting with a KD next week who carries Mouser cabinets. In choosing Kline, did you compare the same wood, similar finish, & door style?

Easy to see why you're excited. It's looking very nice already. I particularly like the way you integrated the window by bringing the cabinetry across the top with that pretty arch.

cotehele - Yep we looked at Mouser (Reese Kitchens), both full custom, same wood, door style, similar finish, all Blum soft close components - Mouser was 25 - 30% higher and did not include installation (Kline does their installation). Our cabinets are virtually the same as the ones you saw at Clark's, only in their lighter (honey) finish. Mouser is a great product and Reese is a fine KD group - we just could not justify the cost differential. Call Nick or Michelle at Kline - they were very easy to work with, family owned business, been around almost as long as Reese. They did everything they said they would, did it on time, etc. Cabinets took 6 weeks from contract to install. We met all the folks in the shop who made and finished the cabinets (Maxwell, IN near Greenfield). Could not be happier that we went with Kline.

Rosie - thanks - we saw the arch in their showroom and wanted one.

Mike - target is completion by race weekend (Indy 500). Granite goes in next week - but still lots of little items to get done.......

I am glad to hear Kline has a very satisfied client! I will definitely go by their shop. A KD from Muncie is coming up Thursday to look at the space, with a plan and proposal to follow. The Mouser in their showroom is very nice.

Enjoy May in Indianapolis! I'm sorry F-1 isn't back this year.

Your cabinets and granite is almost exactly like mine.....

You can't tell alot about the granite, but it's verde butterfly also. My cabinets are almost 20 yrs old, but I opted to keep them since they were in pretty good shape and well made.

Can't wait to see pictures of your completion. It's looking good.

Your granite looks great - ours is being installed in the morning - hope it looks as nice as yours

Yup, it looks as nice as cburch's. I especially love your range light, LOL.

Your kitchen is looking GREAT!!!! How's it feel to have the "major" things done... cabinets and granite? Like 50lbs lifted from your shoulders? Any installation problems? It really looks good!! I'm a little partial, but I really like the Verde Butterfly - such a classic beautiful granite.

Beautiful kitchen - I love your colors! What are the names of the kitchen and blue foyer(?) colors? Very nice! It's coming along great!

Thanks. Kitchen is Benjamin Moore - Mountain Moss. Not sure of Foyer.

wow. you have a 50,000 budget for a kitchen? Are you creating a kitchen fit for a king?

TK - you kitchen is lovely. Nice colors and the cabinets are beautiful.
GV- believe it or not there is no way you could build a kitchen fit for a king for $50,000 (not to say that Tk's kitchen wouldn't make a king happy). It may seem like a lot (and it is certainly a nice budget and lovely kitchen) but super high end kitchens cost upwards of $75,000 and many are well over $100,000. Most cabinets alone will run you over $10,000 (just for semi-custom and stuff you'd get at Lowe's or HD) and that isn't even factoring in appliances, flooring, counters etc. Bottom line, it isn't cheap!

    AFR - thanks.

You are more than welcome! I didn't care for the tone of the comment about your budget.

Your kitchen, new flooring, etc. all look gorgeous. Great job and thanks for posting those lovely photo's for us to enjoy and drool over.

Updated photos - Pendants in - we are 98% complete - just a few items remain. We started March 10 and should be complete by June 1. A long and sometimes frustrating process, but we are very pleased with the outcome.

TK, Nick came by today to get started on a cabinet quote. He is a really nice and knowledgeable kid (well, adult, but much younger than I am). I mentioned how nice your kitchen was. He wanted to see it finished. So we looked at your pictures! Nick said he really enjoyed working with you. Thanks for the recommendation.

Nick's step-brother and my son were in HS at that the same time, both played guitar and were in Jazz Band together. His dad lives about 5 miles south of us. Small world!

Nice job. It looks like a great place to cook and entertain! Thanks for sharing!

cotehele - glad you had an opportunity to speak with Nick. He called me this afternoon to thank me for a referral. He is coming by on Thursday to take some photos of what I hope will be a completed kitchen (contractor still has a few lingering items to complete).
