My mom used to make that style, but I never had a recipe. Then I found the following, which is a bit different but just as tasty:

Raisin Squares

Filling:
3 cups raisins
1 stick cinnamon
1 1/2 cups water
3 tbls lemon juice
1/4 cup arrowroot
2 tblsa water

Crust:
3 cups rolled oats
2 cups whole wheat pastry flour
1/4 tsp sea salt
2 sticks butter, cut in small pieces
1 cup barley malt

To make filling: In a 2 quart saucepan, combine raisins, water, cinnamon stick, and lemon juice. Cover and cook over low heat for ten minutes.

Discard cinnamon stick. In blender or food processor puree raisins & return to saucepan. Add dissolved arrowroot & cook over high heat, stirring, until thickened and clear. Set aside.

Preheat oven to 350. Oil a 9 x 14 cake pan.

To make crust: Put oats, flour and salt in a large bowl. Cut butter into flour until crumbly.

Stire barley malt into the flour until well mixed and you have a soft dough. Divid in half.

Roll out 1/2 the dough between 2 pieces of wax paper to fit the cake pan. Remove top aper. Invert dough into pan and peel off paper. Press dough into all corners of pan and press edges down. Spread filling evenly over crust, smoothing with a spatula.

Break remaining dough between fingers until crumbly. Sprinkle over filling, covering completely. Press down lightly.

Bake 35-40 minutes. Cut into squares.
