LOOKING for: Baby Shower - what to serve?

I'm giving a baby shower next weekend and I keep going back & forth on what I want to do.

Of course there will be a big cake.....but what do you think about some cantaloupe, watermelon and some strawberries dipped in blue tinted white chocolate? I know when I go to showers I hear commits that some due to health cant eat the cake, some donÂt like cake, some donÂt like icing...and so on... so I though the fruit would be different.

I would have this on the cake table. Also scattered about this table would be some of those candy lifesaver pacifiers..

Then scattered about the guest tables I would place some candy with the 'candy wrappers' on the thanking them for coming.

.

ALSO, in little bowls placed in new born diapers as a holder I will have some nuts rolled in warn honey and when cooled rolled in powder sugar (AWESOME!)... I also have 1-2 on the cake table

Can any one think of ANYTHING else I would/should need. Please, all suggestion welcomed!!!!!

Not that I think one person is more special or important then the other B U T it just so happen there will be 'very important potential customers' at this party.... so I really, really, rally want to make a impression!!!!!!

Thanks Oklahoma

Will you also be serving other food apart from sweets ? I think the fruit is a good idea, although I wouldn't bother dipping it in chocolate (more sweets). I'd also have trays of little moist crustless white bread sandwiches, or those made from a slice of white together with a slice of brown soft bread, again crustless with fillings such as: egg salad & lettuce, pinwheel sandwiches made from cream cheese with an asparagus stick and cut crosswise, stacked and checkerboard sandwiches made from alternate crustless brown and white bread slices filled with patés and smooth fillings, then cut crossways to make little striped sandwiches, and small glass bowls of pickles and nuts rather than candies.

I haven't been to a baby shower for a while (lol) but I'd include other light food besides cake if I were doing it.

Here are some ideas from a family buffet we had while on holiday. The food is probably a little too substantial for serving at a baby shower but you might scale down something you see here:

    - served warm

platter. This prepared by a chef friend. Platter includes radishes and plums, decorated with grape leaves.

. I'd made miniatures of these.

    Good Luck !

I agree that some "real" food would be nice, although I like the concept of "blue dipped" fruit for the appearance.

I usually think "women" when I think of baby shower attendees, so we often have tiny sandwiches and wraps like Sharon described or chicken salad and seafood salad in petite croissants or lettuce cups. Sometimes I make cream puff dough and make tiny puffs then stuff those with the sandwich fillings. Ham salad goes well in those too.

Personally, I would not eat a "blue dipped" strawberry. Fresh strawberries are pretty enough on their own.

Some small sandwiches or other savory foods are needed to balance all the sweets. I usually think "something sweet" (cake, cookies, and/or candy - mints are fine), "savory" (sandwiches, quiche squares, wraps, chicken salad in pastry shells, etc.) and "something fresh" (fresh fruit, veggies with a dip, veggie pizza squares. You don't have to do all of those; one or two savory items, one or two fresh items, and the cake would be enough. But, if you want it to look like a *spread* and impress people, then do more of each category.

I'm including a recipe for the veggie pizza squares.

I don't think the blue dipped fruit sounds good at all. Sorry. For one thing blue is not a appealing color in food. I can understand blue cake decorating, or something made with blueberries, but blue white chocolate on fruit...not for me. I also would not want sweetened watermelon or canatalope, but maybe others do, dunno.

You didn't say what time of day, so I'll guess afternoon. I would expect some type of food other than just sweets. The above ideas are good. If you really want to 'wow' someone you need to get creative with appetizer type foods or maybe a big green salad with lots of yummy veggi's and bowls of grilled chicken, ham and shrimp for adding whatever a person likes to their salad.

Maybe I missed, but didn't see you mentioning beverages.
Friend served this at a baby shower, last year, it was a hit.

    Chocolate Punch
    4 1-oz sq semisweet chocolate
    1/2 Cup Sugar
    2 Cups Hot water
    2 qt Milk
    1 1/2 tsp. Vanilla extract
    1 qt Vanilla ice cream
    1 qt Club soda
    1/2 pt Heavy cream; whipped
    Ground cinnamon

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In a large saucepan combine the chocolate and sugar with the hot water. Bring to a boil, stirring for 2 mins. Add milk, and continue heating.

When hot, beat in vanilla with a rotary egg beater or whisk. Remove from heat.

Chill, then pour into a punch bowl over ice cream. For sparkle, add club soda. Top with whipped cream and dust with cinnamon.

    Yield: 12 servings
