This week weÂve been bombarded with two posts touting the same book of copycat recipes. Putting aside the issue of whether or not they were spam, Westelle raised a question that wasn't answered:
Why would anyone care?
First off, weÂre not talking about the best restaurants in the world. Here, for instance, is the list touted:
Red Lobster
» Applebee's
» Chili's
» Olive Garden
» T.G.I. Fridays
» Outback Steakhouse
» Starbucks
WeÂve tried Outback twice---the first and last time. The lousy service was exceeded only by the poor quality of the food. Red Lobster offers what is arguably the worst (not to mention most overpriced) seafood in the country. Applebees is a bar, with a not particularly creative menu, and could care less if you buy food or not; so long as you keep drinking.
Never been in the others, but presume they are of the same level.
LetÂs put that aside, too, though. In a nation that considers McDonalds to be food, I can understand thinking the next level up as great restaurants. But, my real question is, why does anyone want copycat recipes?
When I go to a restaurant I want something that I canÂt or wonÂt fix myself at home. The whole idea is to enjoy a quality dining experience that somebody else prepares; to see how chefs convert plebian ingredients to culinary works of art; to explore new ethnic or cultural approaches to food.
Generally speaking, if I want those specific choices at home thereÂs not much reason for me to go out in the first place.
I am not being a wisea*s about this, or knocking other peopleÂs choices. But IÂd really like to understand why the fascination with recipes---copycat or original--- from those restaurants.
Can someone explain?
