The Pom Wonderful site has some directions on how to open them - lots of other info, too, including recipes. DH and I just whack one in two - half for me and half for DH. Just kind of pull it open by sections and pick out the "arils" (tiny fruits, seeds, whatever). Discard the white membrane and be careful - pomegranate juice stains. DH introduced me to pomegranates about 32 years ago and I always look forward to this time of year. Eating one is like having a party in your mouth!

Just whack them open...or follow the directions posted by Virginia...and once you get it open ( it's really not hard!) just sprinkle a few of those seeds on top of your salad, or on a dish of fruit ( great with pears!) or on top of your cooked chicken breast...or just pop a handful of those red "pearls" into your mouth and enjoy!

Culinary Uses: Pomegranate makes beautiful pink sorbet, icing, salad dressing, soup and puddings. The juice gives a unique fresh flavor to sauces and marinades for fish, chicken and beef. Use the seeds to garnish fruit salad, dessert and appetisers. To remove the seeds: Cut out the blossom end, remove some of the white pith but do not break the red pulp around the seeds. Score the skin into quarters. Break the pomegranate into halves and then halve again following score lines. Bend back the rind and pull out the seeds. The juice can be strained to remove any seed sediment. Refrigerate for up to 2 months or store in a cool, dark place for up to a month.

Medicinal Uses: The bark is used to treat dysentery and diarrhoea. Both the rind and bark are considered to be specific remedies for tapeworm infestation. The juice of fruit pulp is taken to comfort an upset stomach and as a remedy to relieve flatulence. The pulp is good for the heart and stomach. The rind and the skin of the fruit are sun-dried, powdered and mixed with honey to cure diarrhoea and dysentery. Pomegranate juice is a natural face mask, its astringency and acidity being beneficial for oily skin. Fruit is rich in potassium and contain Vitamin C.
