Could you live here?

Recent real estate listing in our area...didn't even know the house existed. Built in 2003.

No..looks too much like a cross between a museum and a hotel lobby. The DR looks like an executive board room set up for a meeting. The outside umbrella area looks like a hotel too.I do kind of like the bedroom and the sitting room area has the lovely view and those beams. But it isn't my style of home.

How much are they asking ? What does the rest look like ? c

If it weren't so big, maybe. There at least seems to be a consistency in the application of architectural elements and materials throughout the build at least in the pictures you've shown. Parts are a bit overwrought, maybe.

It's much like a Frank Lloyd Wright house in that the architecture is kind of overpowering. It makes the furniture look almost superfluous, like it's in the way of the design.

But it has a lot going for it.

My first thought was that it looked like a high end grocery store from the front. The rest reminds me of a hotel. No, I wouldn't even consider that home.

When I first opened it up I thought those were parking lot lines in the front...ha! I love contemporary....but this doesn't do it for me.

I certainly couldn't live there as the lines are too strong and the spaces too large...I'd need to wear a sweater regardless of the weather just to try and feel warm.

They want $2mil for the place...it's almost 9700 sq ft, 6 BR, 10 baths.

And yes, you walk through that shower to get to the whirlpool tub that is all windows open to the deck outside.

    "overwrought" ... just a bit.

It does have that unfortunate hotel lobby look.

Can you link to the listing?

Not my thing, and a risky investment IMHO.

Yet, 2mn for 9700 sq feet in CT (assuming we are still talking Fairfield County) seems very cheap. It must be in a town without rail service to NYC?

It's probably a 15-20 min drive to the train station.

Annie, what ARE those lines out front in the first pic?

I found the listing but still can't tell. Pal was right about the FLW connection. From the listing -

"Exceptionally exquisite, frank lloyd wright inspired, 2002 contemporary designed to replicate wright"s famous 'fallingwater' masterpiece. No expense spared: this steel, stucco and stone work of art elegantly integrates everyday living with nature. Dramatic atrium entrance boasting 3 stories of glass and steel creates indelible modern feel and oneness with outdoor surroundings. 9,686 total square feet, 6 en-suite bedrooms, 9 full and 1 half baths, 6 fireplaces, 7 terraces, rec room/home theater area, 6 bay garage, gunite pool. Effective 7/1/13, taxes are $48,250 and are under further appeal to be lowered. Year round retreat feel in beautiful lower Easton."

The lines are stairs to the front entrance....the place really needs some exterior landscaping....there's a lot of plain dirt there.

Editing to say I shouldn't make assumptions. I have not been to the house...it may be mulch or brown stones or something...all I know is, it ain't lawn. And if it's something else, I wouldn't want to weed it or spray it with chemicals to keep it from being green.

I think they are losing money.

It lacks human scale, that is the big problem and a problem that affects many large custom builds. This may be FLW-inspired, but Wright would never build a residence that was so overscaled.

I think the volumes with all hard surfaces would echo sound which I wouldn't enjoy. I do like all of the natural light that streams in. In general, though, I wouldn't choose that house for myself.

If I owned a small company with high-end clients and wanted a place for very personal executive and client retreats, maybe.

You'd need a troupe of circus performers to clean it ...

No, I couldn't live there either. It does look more like a business than a home, inside and out.

"EXCEPTIONALLY EXQUISITE, FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT INSPIRED, 2002 CONTEMPORARY DESIGNED TO REPLICATE WRIGHT'S FAMOUS "FALLINGWATER" MASTERPIECE. "

    Hahahaha!

    I live near Fallingwater.
    Replicate?
    Not even close....

    Well that's realtor hyperbole.

    Fallingdownfrontsteps maybe.

love it. I certainly would, given the money.

    Could I live there?

    Yes or die/go broke trying.

I have 9 friends that would go with me so there would still be a "guest" bedroom and a "guest" bathroom. They would also qualify as a troup of circus performers.

Didn't remind me of Fallingwater, either...

:) That entry reminds me of the headquarters of a religious action group. Overall, overwrought for sure. I could conceivably live there, though. The biggest problem for me, though, is actually the size. Homes with nowhere cozy to go always remind me of the virtues of our little 50-year-old vacation trailer.

Yeah, Pal, the more I look at it, I am sure they are losing a ton. This is a fire sale. And it always will be because it is so taste specific, and particularly out of place in CT.

Our neighbors house was once listed for 8mn and eventually sold for 2mn... on 30 acres. Pretty much teardown value (thankfully, topography, zoning and other issues largely prevent subdivision). The architect was a name many people would know. But talk about taste specific! The style is really out there. Blessedly, it is not visible from our home in any season.

Now perhaps it's the way the pictures are taken, but all the angles of the beams seem to be slightly off-center, not enough to be interesting, but certainly enough to give me a headache.

Its that silly Realtor Stretchy camera. This does Not need any help to look more spacious and the distortion is off-putting.

I thin it would be nice as a conference center or retreat center. Certainly wouldn't want to live in it. Still, it's a steal for 2 mio.

Not for me, I find it cold, it would make a good conference center as nosoccermom stated.

Way too massive for me. I'd need a whole cleaning staff to help. That said, I like some aspects of it. Obviously the front needs some serious landscaping. I like the stone, the beams, and all the windows. But it would need to be shrunk to no more than 1/3 its current size. I actually don't mind the openness and the "cold" surfaces. But the scale is insane.

I agree, would be a fabulous training/conference center. I used to work with someone who had a mountain home very similar to this.

No, I would not want to live here. Just too large and institutional looking.

    It's too contemporary for me.
But if it were free, I would take it..

ILoveCookie...free is never free...even if they gave it to you, taxes each year are close to $50k.

Hmm, in that case, it would be no. I don't handle high property taxes well.

It looks to me like a bad FLW ripoff by someone who didn't really get what he was looking for.

If I had the money to buy it, then yes I could live there. But I am terrified of what my wife would do to the place :) The dining room would wind up with suits of armor and shields on the wall I suspect :) Because seriously, how could you live there and *not* turn that dining room into a medival feast hall?

Would it be a smart buy? No. But if I had enough money to be comfortable living there, I suspect smart buys wouldn't be entirely relevant.

Something about the central verticality suggests Albert Speer to me -- gives me the creeps. And is that an 8-bay garage?

    What time is check-out?

Tempelhof Airport meets YMCA of the Rockies. Srsly?

No. I don't care for the style at all. I also wouldn't want to live in a place that big. Is it possible for a huge home to feel cozy? And what on earth does one need 10 bathrooms for? Cleaning the bathrooms is my least favorite chore!

sheesharee, if you can afford this house, believe me, you aren't the one cleaning the bathrooms....

I will take the living room. The dining looks tight. It is definitely a unique place. I could not live there, but again, love the living room!
