Sounds like a personal decision to me. You can make lovely borders in many easier way but you will get out of it what you want to put in it. I often use a striped fabric in borders cut crossways for a piano key effect and it's easy. You can buy fabric with strips of design that give a border a very classy look. Look at quilt pictures posted on various sites and see what looks good to you. Unless a special gift, I don't put that much time into my borders and still am happy with result.

Yep......I'm about to start a quilt calling for a border of small scallops. Very cute, but not terribly practical against a face, especially for a baby's quilt.

You may be talking about two different things here; a sawtooth border is made of pieced half-square triangles that are sewn together to form a solid fabric border. Prairie Points are made by folding pieces of fabric and attaching them to the quilt to that they extend beyond the quilt edge.

Here's a quilt I did several years ago for my mother-in-law. The Sawtooth border (triangles finished at 1" square) was a pain, but I really, really like it.

Thanks teresa and Annie. I was mistaking them with prairie points. Still learning! I have saved a whole slew of points from making half square triangles the easy way....most of them set against black. I figured I'd never make enough of them to do anything with the thousand pyramids, but I can see a use for them now! Striking quilt, Annie.

Oh of course! I did misunderstand and thought you were talking about prairie points. A sawtooth border looks awesome and probably would be worth the effort!

There are speedier ways to make half square triangles than one at a time. You can mark your fabric into a grid and sew 1/4 " away from the lines and then cut them apart. You can get at least 8 at a time that way. Do a google search. Send me an email and maybe I can help you out.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm using Thangles and can get 10 at a time. After looking at other fabrics and options, I decided to make a strip of the sawtooth border ( would that be teeth?). I put all the options around the quilt and the sawtooth border strip looks best. So, I'll put the time in as this is for a gift and I want to be pleased with it when I finish.

That's they way to really see if you are going to be happy with it! Smart move!
