Small kitchen. Layout ideas?

I have a small kitchen which is entirely part of the family room. See photos. The freezer section of the fridge does not open fully because of a hard wall. I am thinking of putting a 12" wide pantry to the left of the fridge (counter depth) so it would open more fully but not sure if this would look strange and really accomplish what I need. After the remodel I will have mostly drawers in the lowers so I won't have a problem with food storage so don't really have to have that pantry. I'm also not sold on side by side fridges and could go back to an old fashioned freezer on top and fridge on bottom. I plan on trying to use my 1952 O'Keefe and Merritt stove so old-fashioned is fine. I am going to add 12"deep cabinets to the outside back of the island to give me back to back storage. Any other ideas? I have to keep the basic footprint except for adding those extra cabinets to the back of the island but is there anything I'm missing?. Any cabinet/counter colors you'd like to suggest? The satillo tiles are staying on the floor and the wood on the beamed ceiling also has that reddish look. Thanks!

What a great room to work with!

Can you post a sketch with measurements?

Just want to add that I also LOVE your house and am so glad you're keeping the satillo tile. Yours is really gorgeous.

what vibe/style are you aiming for as the pics show the possibility of anything from modern to traditional to rustic.
Altho sentimentality, as in "old fashioned" has its place I think this is one kitchen where I would splurge on the vertical narrow fridge called Liebherr....they are a good looking streamlined addition to any kitchen and offer better technical specs than what you are considering. It would be a purchase of value and efficiency and an excellent upgrade.

The depth of that side wall is unfortunate. Your best bet probably is to put something to the left of the refrigerator. If you don't want a pantry cabinet for food, you could use that space as a broom closet. Or to store rarely-used serving pieces, table linens, etc. Or as a recycling station. I don't think you'll have trouble filling it. Plus, no doubt you are going to put a exhaust hood over the range, so you'll lose a bit of space there.

Your vintage range is surely wider than your current range. If you lose some space to the left of the fridge, and some more space due to a wider range, you might want to look at a narrower fridge. The narrow Liebherr mentioned by herbflavor is supposed to be great; however the Smeg, which is also small, would look much more appropriate with your vintage range. Since it can be seen from the famiiy room, is appearance an issue? Maybe you have an attached garage where you can keep an extra fridge for over-flow when you entertain? Or maybe since you have counter space on the island, you don't care about space along the wall and you want a bigger fridge? I must say, the only fridge I've ever really loved was a French door style w/ bottom freezer, but they're not narrow.

    Good luck!
