May I make a suggestion? Sometimes it is easier to pick out the counters first and then choose a backsplash based on the colors in your counters. I know it seems like it should work either way, and it can, but what you put on your counters is in many ways a more important decision--both aesthetically and functionally-- than what you use for a backsplash. Many people who choose granite counters, for example, pick a background color out of the particular granite they have chosen to set the tile color(s) for the backsplash. Another option, which is what we chose, is to match a tile backsplash to the cabinets (in our case, both are ivory) and then have a contrasting color for the counters (in our case, soapstone). So there are many ways to do this, but I suspect you might find it just a bit easier if you made a decision about the counters first.
