layout opinions

I have been working on my kitchen layout. We are still in the planning phase of a new house, so nothing is set in stone yet. I have included my layout, and also a blank slate with measurements. The laundry chute will be housed in a tall cabinet, and the thing that looks similar to the laundry chute on the other side of the sink is just something I put there to note another tall cabinet for symmetry. It can be moved, but the laundry chute cannot. I would like to include a utility closet for a larger garbage can and cleaning supplies, as well as a separate pantry. I am planning a cooktop, wall oven/microwave, standard sink, dishwasher, and a side-by-side fridge. I would also like a laptop area.

BTW, the back of the house faces north.

Thanks in advance for the advice!

I'm afraid that corner between the tall cabinet and the fridge will be a dark, difficult to access cave. It's always difficult to have a fridge that close to the corner and the tall cabinet will make it worse...So I think I'd move the fridge over next to the pantry. OR, how about putting the fridge where the ovens are, and putting the ovens next to the pantry? This would give you a nice big area for baking at that end of the kitchen and near the oven.

Another thing to think about is that microwaves are usually most convenient if close to the fridge. Depends on your particular use of the micro, and what else it fouls up to have it that way.

All in all, your plan is a little spread out, but seems functional and pretty good to me, other than the fridge/corner relationship.

Thanks. I agree about the corner/cave. I may move the fridge down beside the pantry and just make a longer countertop on the other side. That would probably make the space more usable.

Is there any particular reason for the covered porch in that location? Vs an attached porch?

Putting the porch under the house roof proper makes for an expensive porch, IMO. And, if high winds are a concern, that open corner has the potential for the wind getting underneath and working to lift the roof.

I am definitely not a layout expert but did you try a narrower isle between the island and the perimeter? If you did that, perhaps you could add an overhang for a couple of chairs to the island. It was a priority for me because I have kids and wanted to make sure they can have a snack or a quick breakfast without carrying the food somewhere else, or they can sit there if they need help with homework. But even if you don't have any kids or grandkids, a chair or two would be nice for "visiting the cook"
