Need creative idea for sofa table top?

I have 2 old iron sewing machine bases and would like to top them with something to make a long sofa table (mostly to be used for extra dining space for guests). I originally was going to top it with a thick piece of glass, but after dusting my glass shelves today.. I think I might like something that doesn't show the dust as well. It is a very sunny room.

I've posted this photo before.

Maybe a wood or metal top? Repurposing something would be great - even if it were a bit shabby. I love trash to treasure projects. Ideas?? Also what color would you paint the iron bases. Black? White? Red (which is my accent color in the room)?

Thanks.

I have seen them with old windows or old doors.

If you don't want glass may some old rusted tin tiles in the panes.

Can you show a picture of the tables? I'm not sure which one's you're talking about. Are they the kind where the sewing machine goes down into the table?

I have an old Singer table that has a 3 inch oak top and black iron legs. The black iron legs keeps the authenticity of the piece, and it looks great! I'd keep it black.

And yes, I remember your room! I loved it then and I still do!

I have seen an old door used or if you need something more narrow....how bout an old rustic raised panel shutter? You could also get some old barn wood and attach the pieces together like an old farm house table if you want something that is flat. Or.....go to a granite shop & look for a scrap piece of marble...ooooolalllaaa.

    Pretty room.

The bases are like this (not my picture).

I do want something more narrow, so a full sized door or window wouldn't work. A scrap piece of marble would be great or a raised panel shutter. I like the idea of old tin tiles too.

    Keep the ideas coming!

maybe an old tin advertising sign? You could sturdy it up using a sheet of plywood - or use the plywood and some thin boards to make a table top- paint the edges in a bold color- I like the turquoise color like your hat box.

Lydia- do you have a closeup of the buffet? I am getting ready to paint an entire dining set that is similar- did you paint yours and if so what color and steps did you use?

Groomingal - I love the idea of an old tin sign! Might be hard to find a very long and narrow one at a good price though... but it gives me an idea anyhow.

Mine was sloppily painted a stark white when I got it. I sanded lightly, used a tackcloth then painted a creamier white (Mythic Ivory - Valspar seaside retreat collection). Took 3 coats with a brush. I left the old paint on the knobs and just sanded some of it off making it look a little shabby. I have a matching china cabinet too in the same room. Good luck with painting yours - I don't envy you. Just my 2 pieces wore me out. lol

Had to move my hatbox. Cat was making it a bed. :-)

I would consider just doing a white painted top and polyurethaning it for durability to keep with your white on white theme. Formica also makes a laminate that is white all the way thru...no black line. Or look at tops available at IKEA. A hollow core flush door is also an option if it is not too long (usually 80") but they come in various widths.

I think some of the other ideas sound great but finding the right length width and stability in salvaged items is often pretty hard. And, a paneled door for example would still need a piece of glass on it, if you wanted to eat on it.

Thanks Palimpsest. I didn't know Ikea sold countertops - no Ikea near me, but I think at least some of them would be shippable.

I've also thought about doing a mosaic on a piece of wood. I've got a huge lot of old souvenier plates that I was thinking about getting rid of. Not sure how that would turn out since I've never did any mosaic work before... I think it might look cool though!
