photos: help with backsplash question

I know this is a kitchen question, but I thought I might find some good advice here on the Home Decorating forum.

Finally, my kitchen is almost done. It's very traditional, with stained maple cabinets and wooden hood with arch, honed limestone floors, Madura Gold granite countertops.

The last hurdle: designing the backsplash. What I'd like is a framed (in cream/gold-ish tones) harlequin design under my hood and a light coordinating 4x4 field tile to go with it --preferably in a honed stone, but the closest harlequin pattern I've found is by Walker Zanger in polished marble.

The style is called Opus Antico -- they are small 1-1/4 by 2 inch harlequins in Dore Royal and light travertine. Problem is, I can't find a honed marble to go with this (I wouldn't want more polished). The question -- finally -- is will polished marble look strange with a tumbled marble field tile?

Thanks, and any other backsplash suggestions, photos would be much appreciated.

OK, so here, if I have finally figured out how to post, are photos of my kitchen so you can see where the backsplash will go:

Some marble examples: This one is just to show color -- we would use harlequin pattern without Roman-type border.

I am sorry I couldn't get photos to embed.

Thanks!

What a pretty kitchen. I like your ideas. Of all the samples you've posted, I'd do the harlequin tiles on the board labeled iron stone. I sortof like the larger harlequin, but the smaller ones are pretty too. I'd pick a border tile off that board as the border. I like the field tile on that same board, but it looks like 2x2's?? I think any standard 3x3 or 4x4 travertine would look great with the harlequin you've chosen. The only tile I didn't care for is the dark brown square tiles - too dark for me.

I did a similar thing in my kitchen - just as an example for you you see with the travetine - mine is durango travertine.

fromflorida, you gave me way too much to chose from. LOL The only one I didn't really care for was the large harlequin pattern. I think it was competing with the counter top. The tumbled mosaic's were very pretty. Sorry I can't offer any more than that. I'm still trying to figure out my own.

Carol, your backsplash is gorgeous. I think that's the first time I've seen a tumbled stone with a shiney border. It looks fabulous. You've given me some ideas. Thanks

Caroleoh -- I like your kitchen very much, too, and your backssplash is great! Very similar in overall effect to what I have in mind -- and I was glad to to see how well the shinier accents go with the tumbled marble.

Brutuses -- sorry there were so many samples there. I should have cleaned out that site. I really think I've narrowed it down to the lighter tumbled marble 4 X4s with one of the harlequins. Because my floor is set in a running brick pattern, I don't think I will put he tumbled marble field on a diagonal (too many patterns) -- I will just have one framed area with the harlequins.

Thanks so much for the advice and any other advice on a good backsplash for my kitchen will be much appreciated! I am open to anything at this point!

Pulling out pictures of my backsplash got me thinking about my kitchen remodel which we did two summers ago! Anyways, I found so much inspiration from the kitchen forum and the Finished Kitchens Blog. Especially their backsplash slide show, so fromflorida, make sure you go to this site and watch the backsplash slide show. You can find the link in the upper right corner of the home page. There must be something there that you will love. I sortof combined a couple of different ideas, but my primary inspiration was Artteacher's backsplash. I still love it, and interestingly enough, she used the harlequin tiles inside her border. I have the tile info I believe somewhere if you're interested. She emailed it to me two years ago!
    Here's Artteacher's backsplash - my inspiration!

And here's some other backsplashes that I saved that I really liked.

Thanks, Caroleoh. All these are great! I've seen artteacher's before and really like it. I also like the one with the harlequins and the subway tile on the bottom row a lot. Would you happen to have any information on it? Thanks!

Sorry I don't. I would look through the backsplash slideshow on the Finished Kitchens Blog. That's generally where I found everything I saved for future reference. If you get the person's gardenweb info, sometimes they include their email so you can email them a question.

Can someone please tell me how to post several photos? This is driving me nuts!
    Thank you

    Hi Caroleoh -
I've been looking on the finished kitchen blog for that backsplash but no luck yet.I'll keep looking though. Thanks!

Richelle -- I wish I knew how to embed pictures myself but if you do a search there are many threads that will tell you how. Good luck!

Use photobucket! It is the easiest way for anyone to embed pictures. Open an account, and upload photo's. Then while looking at your album, it will list embedding views - just CLICK the html (no need to copy and paste as it is automatic with photobucket). Come back here and PASTE - it's that easy!

Sorry to hijack-- but I do paste photos from photobucket, but how did caroleoh do it with so many one next to the other and not so huge like mine show up?
