How do you settle on a style?

I am finally getting around to replacing some old furniture which brought me to repainting the room a new color. We have picked out the sofa, which we love, so far so good, right?

Except every time I begin looking at lamps, side tables, wall decor, my head spins! I like so many looks, it's hard to really pick which direction I want to go which is giving me a lot of trouble.

How did you decide?

What style is your sofa? The next step might be to select a concept (or if you prefer--a theme). Have you collected any pictures of rooms that you love? Consider dissected such a room into the elements that you like---Does it have clean lines etc.

Nice sofa. The trick to blending furniture is to look at the visual weight and the lines.

The sofa is visually heavy, with strongly curved lines on the arms. Your best bet for other furniture will be to have curves somewhere (even in the fabric) or in the legs or back. A Parson's chair with a curvy fabric pattern, a curvy wing-back with almost any fabric.

You also need furniture that won't look "wimpy". Many traditional or transitional or modern casual things will work very well. Rustic stuff like the overdone Pottery Barn or industrial look could be great.

What will have problems working with that sofa unless you are really good at design, would be delicate furniture, "airy" furniture, fancy furniture (inlays, gold leaf), or extremely modern furniture.

Don't forget to choose items that are comfortable and that you actually like and that will provide the purpose you are selecting it. I find trying to maintain a certain 'style' makes a space less inviting and cozy to me.

Your sofa looks sooo comfy! What color did you paint your room??

"Style" is a difficult word to work with sometimes. I'd say, back up a bit.

I always begin a design scheme with two things:
First...what is appropriate for the architecture of the house (not necessarily matching...just appropriate), and that can include lots of things and rule out others.

Next...how do you live, how do you dress, how will you use the room? The answers to those questions will tell you what to use in a room and where to put it, how many light sources, and what kind, how you control the natural light, and whether you want materials that can take some abuse or things that must be babied. One little secret about decorating is that, if you choose a formal style, but you always wear jeans and t-shirts at home, you'll never use those rooms in your daily life.

The next decisions revolve around the feeling you want, which will lead you to the colors you choose for your floors and walls.

Once you have those things firmly in mind, you can then begin to choose the tones and shapes and textures and symbols that make up what we usually mean when we say "style."

Unless you answer the first questions first, it is very easy to lose your way, make costly mistakes, and finish with something unsatisfying or uncomfortable.

And if it makes you feel any better, even those of us who are or have been in the design trade make classic mistakes ourselves, falling in love with a thing or a color or an idea that we can't resist, against our better judgement. Passion can lead to weird choices. (Just ask Sandra Bullock...)
