Update: Nursery's complete

Hi everyone!

I haven't been around much but wanted to share finished photos of the nursery as promised. The only thing left to do is install the (orb and wood) ceiling fan.

*Since this is a tada thread, I am going to ask that you please refrain from any well meaning safety advice. Please know that things are bolted and fastened well. We won't be using anything in or on the crib when it's in use and there will be changes that need made as the baby grows and we will adjust accordingly.

I'm going to blabber about the details for a bit since some have followed along and things changed. The photos are below if you want to skip this part. :)

I had a lot of creative ideas that didn't come to pass with this room because somewhere in my pregnancy, to my surprise, I ran out motivation. We wanted a room that would grow with our son for several reasons. We also created a budget from the start and I'm happy to say I stayed within the limits.

I had planned to draw all the art but everything ended up either too babyish or adult and I couldn't find a happy medium. I did draw one small photo of a fox and it's on the bookcase.

I was going to make a mobile but decided to scratch the idea for different reasons but I also didn't want to put a hole in the ceiling.

I got the moulding idea from Thriftydecorchic's blog and flipped the design to work on our wall. What appears to be knobs are actually leather buttons I glued to push pins (didn't want large hardware holes from cabinet type knobs) and the ribbon/hanger is actually just for show as the picture frames themselves are attached to the wall. Some of you may remember the animal art I was considering but I didn't like that the background was plain white instead of trees, etc. All three of the art pictures I got for free from SprikSpace.com and had them printed to size.

The found the jute webbing growth chart idea online and I'm really happy I made that instead of the oversize growth rulers that are popular.

I bought the sheets and made everything that's plaid except the changing pad cover, which my local seamstress made.

I had talked about making a few pillows and a blanket just for pretty visual layering but decided it would've been too short lived and a waste. I also was going to go with an owl on the front of the chair pillow but the deer silhouette, honestly, was easier. LOL. Are we seeing a pattern here? : )

The large frame was actually one of the mirrors for our dresser that we're not using. I took the guts out and added the jute. Now that it's finished, I think I'd prefer it with another line and may change it eventually.

I know some aren't going to like the deer horns and that's ok. If it makes anyone feel better we found a whole deer skull in the woods and had it made into wall mount. I honestly would'e preferred the horns attached to the wall for a more rustic look but DH requested it be attached to a back plate.

The dresser was from CL and the top was wrecked when we bought it. It looked like someone dumped it upside down and pulled it over large rocks but I had a vision and hope that we could fix it! It took three attempts to get the top the way it is now but I'm happy with it. I painted the dresser BM Heritage Red and I do like the color even though I originally pictured something a bit deeper. I did some light glazing but liked it without as well. I left DH decide on the glaze and it turns out he originally thought glaze was the same as distress. Oops. : ) I would've liked to do fun animals for the hardware but again, was trying to stay in budget. I had mentioned the dresser had a perfumey/powder smell and I tried a bunch of things to remove it. I was all ready to bust out shellac or poly (yes, outside with a respirator) for the inside, but I decided to test out an item in a drawer for a few days to see if the smell transferred and, to my surprise, it didn't. The clothes are in there and don't smell so that's awesome and I'm assuming what's left of the original smell will eventually disappear completely.

-The curtains are lined cotton twill.

-Wall color is BM Manchester Tan and the trim is a stock white.

-Crib is Graco.

-Rocker came from CL.

-I bought the stool years ago from a local thrift store with the intention of giving it a makeover. I think it's kind of ugly yet I like it and the leather adds a different texture.

-The tablecloth is actually a cut down version of larger one I had made for the LR. Remember how I mentioned the lack of motivation? Pregnant Shee didn't bother to change out the thread to match. Oh, the horror! :)

- We replaced the backing of the bookcase with bead board paneling and painted it the wall color.

-Most of the books were mine as a kid, my parents read to me all the time and I'm really looking forward to doing the same.

-I made the baseball bookends with 4x4 tiles that I glued, spackled, and painted.

-My pap made the Coke plane.

I would've liked to add a rug but we were out of the budget money and I decided to scratch the idea since we don't need it.

We added an additional shelf to the closet that was originally in the laundry room before we added the cabinets, and it really makes things nice for extra storage.

I think that's it! Like I said, I had other plans for this room and it's not what I originally pictured but we're happy with it and are excited for our baby to arrive in a few weeks.

Thanks for your help along the way!

I don't have a wide angle lens so some of the photos show the color more accurately than others because of using two different cameras.

A room designed with love! It feels cozy and happy. You have done a wonderful job, even if it didn't end up where you thought it might, and you should be proud.

And, the best 'creation' for the space is yet to come! He will be the perfect addition to the room, your family and your heart.

Your room is adorable! I like that it is calm and cozy, and yet filled with bright colors and family-made things that already tell a family's story. And I love the little footstool; my eye went to it immediately.

Please don't worry about "lack of motivation" and "not getting everything done"! That happens to almost all of us - Nature is simply preparing us for this miraculous event by clearing our minds of less important details. : > )

Take care of yourself and stay in touch!

I don't think you have to worry about any negative comments. The room looks marvelous! Well done. Extra credit for sticking to a sensible budget.
All the best for a safe and happy arrival of your lucky little boy.

Oh Shee, that is not what I pictured at all! You really have a good eye. I was worried the room would be dark but I didn't know you had such wonderful windows in there.

Do not EVER change the colors of that dresser! I want to find an old dresser and do the same.

    Brava!

You did a great job! It's so warm and inviting. I love what you did with the dresser. The scripture that you have framed is one of my favorites. I have relied on it many times in raising my two boys. So excited for you!

I luv, luv, luv it Shee! Perfect room for a little guy to "grow" in. Everything a little boy could ask for - a few animals, a little sports, all hand-made by Mom and Dad(well, mostly Mom, and a special piece of art from Pap!

And I love that little leather stool....don't you dare pretty it up.

He's a lucky little guy coming into a home filled with love.

Really, really nice for the little guy....

Wow Shee, you did a great job and should be really proud of yourself. I love the plaids and the way the room has so many home made things in it, that makes it so special. It took a lot of thought and work and it looks beautiful. You were very clever as well because the design as a whole will easily morph into a big boys room too. Lovely.

Shee you hit your mark on all counts from what I can see, even if a few of the small details needed adjustment as you went along. The overall look ( and budget!!!) are true to your vision and it's a room that will grow and transition easily as your son grows. What fun it's been to travel this journey on the sidelines! And now we wait for the BIG reveal.... ** I'd love to see more of the wooden box on the top shelf of the bookcase - it looks like one I had from my grandmother**

I apologize for the wide thread. I thought I resized everything but I must have missed a few.
Thank you everyone for your kind words. I really appreciate it. It was refreshing to read them all. IRL the room doesn't feel bare to me but I think it looks that way in photos. I know I can only inject so much personality in it for now and he'll take care of finishing and tweaking when he arrives. : )

I actually took those photos later in the day when the light isn't as strong. You should see it in the morning hours. Glorious, bright light!

    Lynn - I'm due June 26th.

After I loaded the photos last night I realized I should've shown the actual top now that it's all fixed. So much better!!
    {{gwi:1737003}}

JennaVA - The top was a bugger. I originally asked on the Woodworking forum what they would do and the suggestion was sanding (starting with 80 grit and working to at least 220) and then using Minwax High Performance Wood Filler for whatever the paper wouldnt take out. I'm happy to say sanding took care of all the gouges and we didn't need the filler. I helped with the top originally but my dad finished it in the end. He first sanded the top (used both a belt sander and one of those small hand sanders) and I used Minwax dark walnut stain. I didn't like how the stain absorbed. It was way too light and looked like crap. I then painted it on and the color was good but there was the weeks wait time for it to dry. I then added another painted coat of stain and we waited some more. We then couldn't get the top lint free smooth when applying the poly. Dad and I both like stuff done 'right' so we weren't happy with the outcome. Though I'll admit, I was getting so impatient for the thing to be done I would've settled if he wouldn't of been more persistent. I was ready to say forget it and go to plan B which was paint the entire thing red. He then took the top off, sanded it again, sprayed the stain on and the topcoats. The spray made such a HUGE difference in the finish. I really want a sprayer and it's on my Christmas list. A top quality paint brush just doesn't compare. Even though it took weeks from the time we bought the dresser to finish, I'd do it all over again. We later signed the back of the dresser with a sharpie. :)

Foxespad - Here's a photo of the fox. I had originally created for a specific small picture frame but once it was in, I didn't like how it looked. The picture was so cramped and I wish I would've made it larger. I was just messing around with the larger frame and plaid and never bothered to take it out. I'm still not sure I like it there but...
    {{gwi:1737005}}

For the pillow, I printed the silhouette online, cut it out and traced it onto fabric. I then used the heat n bond (red pack) sheets and ironed it on. Ha, it was late at night when I decided to make the pillow and I started to get tired half way through the process. I was trying to iron the deer to the plaid and it wasn't sticking. I finally realized I forgot to take the plastic off the back before ironing! Thankfully it still worked and I didn't have to cut out the deer again. After cutting the shape out three times I was starting to think the owl wouldn't have been so bad after all. :) With the deer fabric being so thick, I could've easily used fabric glue instead. It wouldn't have gone through the fabric.

Dlm - Here's another shot of the box. It was my grandma's when she was a little girl.

Thanks for the how-to. The top is amazing! I am very impatient when it comes to stuff like that. I would like a sprayer too. My friend bought one from QVC that is supposed to have no overspray, etc. and can be used indoors for trim etc. I have not seen how well it works.

What a terrific room for a new baby, it shows how much thought you put in to it and all from a place of love. Your son is very fortunate to be born to a Mom who loves to make her surroundings look lovely. I can just see you sitting in the chair with him. The room has just the exact amounts of spunk and class blended to make a yummy place to nestle and house your baby. Well done!

Excellent! What I love about the room is that it doesn't look like a cookie-cutter version of a room. It looks like a room tastefully decorated with things meaningful to you.

As I read your explanation of the work put into the bureau top, I thought of how you will always remember that as your special project with your dad.
