Let me see your red sofas, please!

Do you have a red sofa/couch? If so, do you love it or regret it? And would you post pictures, please? We're thinking of doing a red sofa when we finally get new LR furniture. I'm excited about it but would love to see some examples in people's homes. Thanks!

Here's one. Probably not what you have in mind, though...

    From Post Bath Nap

Couch came with Hubby and is leaving as soon as we build our great room.

OTOH, my SIL has a gorgeous red velvet Victorian couch that I plan to steal one of these days.

A red couch, properly executed and accessorized is gorgeous.

This is an older picture, sorry, with old drapes, old carpet, nothing on table, etc. I tried to get you a good newer picture, but my camera battery apparently needs to be charged. My other newer pictures have the sofa covered in dog proofing - lol. The sofa is antique and it's covered in mohair velvet.

I love my red couch and chair. They are vintage crushed velvet and they look so much better than the pic. I have a friend that is a photographer and she wants to use my couch in a pin-up type photo shoot. I have really enjoyed the couch and get lots of complements on it.

LOL, p.! O, your sofa is beautiful!!! Here's mine, not sure if it will help because all the junk in the other rooms are in the back of this room.

But yes, I love red sofas, and think they make a difference in a room. I'd rather have red checked, but oh well.

Mine are like Oakleys. I love em.

Thanks for the pictures! This is the one we're considering--more contemporary in style than most of the ones shown, but I really like it.

Unfortunately, doing the living room is probably on hold for a while with the current economic uncertainty, but it's nice to have something to look forward to. :-)

Oakley, thank you! Yours is lovely too.

I was particularly interested in this thread to see how you all decorate around a vibrant red. I'm going to pick new LR/DR paint one of these days.

Here is a pic I took the other night. It's SO hard to get a good pic of this because it's right in front of a window. So I thought night would help... but it's a bit grainy. At least this pic shows the new carpet and drapes...

    Here's another day time one...

Oceanna, your pictures with the new flooring and the accessories are lovely! Thanks for sharing.

Thanks, Credo! I'm an antique freak and I know not everyone here is, so your words are kind.

I think your sofa selection is nice. But are you keeping your eye on CL? I like CL because you save a lot of money, and your money goes to your local neighbors, not to China or who knows where. Plus, older pieces were generally better built than a lot of what comes out today... more internal bracing and that sort of thing. Both my sofa and chair have 8-way hand tied springs.

The newer rug you see came from CL and was only $50!! My new maple flooring came from CL too.

I like the total quality control of having something reupholstered. I told my upholstery guy the sofa was too sinky soft and the fainting couch was too rock hard, and I wanted some low back support. He fixed all that! I will admit I have some good $$ in that sofa and the matching chair now that I used a pro and he had to do some repairs, but I've had many years of good service from them and many more to come, and they'll be handed down to my kids. They have always made me smile to look at.

This looks so ratty I'm ashamed to show it. The bottom wood piece is not on the chair. The dogs have chewed the piping on the cushion. Then I made a drastic mistake... I went over this chair with my steam cleaner and it totally ruined the velvet. I was heartbroken! Anyway, this is the "before" shot (VERY before). This is the fabric I had on it before and I absolutely loved it. I looked and looked for something similar and couldn't find it, but found the red instead.

This is what it looks like reupholstered and with its new shaplier padding...

There was Spanish moss originally in my sofa and chair. The funny one was my fainting couch. It had originally been a black oilcloth/fake leather and inside it had STRAW as part of the stuffing. lol!

Phantomgardener, here are your pix. I used tinypic.com to post them.

What is the history on these interesting channel-backed pieces?

credomk, I'm sure you won't place your red sofa on a bright green wall, but that's what we did in our shop. It really shows it off, and we have loved showing all kinds of pillows on the woven red fabric.
People do love this little sofa---I'm surprised we still have it.

I saw this pic in a magazine and loved it. This isn't scanned; I just took a lousy pic with my camera. But I'd like to know what you all think of it as a good wall treatment for a red sofa? I was thinking of how pretty NHB's gold paint is with all her white trim. So... I'm thinking of doing this in my LR, but am not sure if I dare put that gold paint next to the cafe' au lait paint of the entry? What do the rest of you with red sofas think of this?

My sofa was originally hunter green. After many years I had it reupholstered to a reddish color that I LOVE.

this is mine...we bought when we lived at our previous home - which had a living room the size of a football field, so it fit wonderfully in there. Its too big for our current family room, but we're making do until we get out basement finished and then it will move down there.

oh, please ignore my fireplace - my husband has promised me countless times that hes going to rid it of the soot stain thats on the front of it (a result of him getting alittle to burn happy this winter) but still hasnt touched it. Im refusing to do it. Its a battle of wills.

    same couch, old living room

Here's an oldie but a goodie from my last house. I'm sure some of you have seen this pic about a bazillion times....sorry...

No red sofa, but I have two upholstered red chairs and ottomans that all together are as big as a sofa. I love red, it's sort of my signature accent color - red car, red cell phone, red purse - but the red chairs have cramped my decorating style. I like them but it's harder to do quick and easy redocorating than it would be if they were neutral.

    Thanks for all the pictures!

Oceanna, I have been watching CL but have been woefully unimpressed with most of the listings I've seen. I do keep checking, though. Your upholsterer did a beautiful job recovering and repadding that chair!

Sallymo, you're right that we won't be placing our sofa against a bright green wall--primarily because it'll be floating facing the fireplace, due to the open design of our floorplan. However, the picture of the one in your shop is absolutely gorgeous! If we were situated remotely close to you (doubtful) I'd consider that for in our study/office/library. For paint, we're looking at putting something along the lines of Flowering Herbs on the walls down the road. I just love Zuzu's inspiration picture, as I know many of you do. :-)

Buddyrose, your sofa looks so nice with your artwork!

Diydevon, yours are lovely too. I do like the picture from your old house with the pretty green walls.

Amysrq, yours is lovely too! Green walls definitely let the red sofa make a statement, and it is a beautiful one. I especially love the artwork you have on the wall above it.

Amysrq, I knew I had seen a red sofa on a green wall in someone's "real" home, but I forgot it was yours! I always loved that room. Our green in the store is too bright to live with, as is the turquoise on the opposite wall!
    What was your green?

Thanks, Sally. I was happy with that room early on...struggled with the others. It was a great house. The green was BM Sherwood Green.

Credomk, the painting is a copy of a Matisse that my DH made. You have good taste! ;-)

Amysrq, your husband is very talented!

    Hi credomk,

I have the same red sofa as OakleyOk and SheeSharee--I also have the matching loveseat and oversized chair. I agree that a red couch looks nice but be careful with sizing. I bought this set for my old house which had a more open floor plan. Now, that I have a larger home with structured floor plan the entire set seems to swamp the living room because red is such a strong color. I have neutral gold tan walls (BM Mystic Gold).

Looking back, I would stick with one red couch and get different chairs which is what most everyone else did. Red is a great color but it probably should be used moderately, in my opinion after my own trial and error. Good luck!

Below is a link to a home decor blog that shows fabric swatches that coordinate with a red and look nice. Look at the picture in the middle of the page.

Thanks for the feedback, home_and_family. I'm definitely planning to do different, coordinating chairs. I love red but prefer the pop of color instead of getting overwhelmed by it. Now we just need to get to the point of being able to do the LR; right now we're making do with our existing--and quite dated--set.

This isn't the best picture in the world...I don't remember why I took it, I think to show what our sofa table normally looks like verses when we have company and don't have crap all over it :) But still...red sofas in leather:
