Different colors on upper cabinets?

I know there have been several threads about one color/finish on lower cabinets and another on upper cabinets...but this is a little different.

While I have always liked white cabinets, I think it will look too cold for my base cabinets in the kitchen, so I want to do a wood finish. However, I'm concerned that all wood uppers might look too dark/heavy.

The windows/trim will be white, with soft gold walls and I would like to have a green island and blue hutch...so I'm wondering if I should mix in a little color on the uppers. Maybe a plate rack or decorative shelf/platter holder, etc. Also, I have the two display shelves on either side of the door to the utility room and I'm not sure what I want to do with those :)

Can anyone with kitchens that have green and/or blue with white or wood, please post pictures? Also, any ideas/links would be greatly appreciated. I did find a vinyl 'brick' floor...so maybe I'll pull this look together, yet!

Here's the plan and a picture of the brick floors. Countertops are ceramic tile on the perimeter and wood on the island, probably with a marble inset for baking. The backsplash tiles are something with branches/vines, similar to the picture below (bunnies optional LOL) with french furniture, accents. Also like antique brass for faucets, copper pots and some wrought iron accents. Obviously, not afraid to have a lot going on in the space :)

Doesn't Honeychurch have some wood mixed in with her other colored cabs? I can't remember specifics, just the overall interesting perception I get looking at her cool kitchen. Congrats on the floor find!

Breezy- Thanks, it's a cute brick and I like the basket weave pattern, more than most. I'll look for Honeychurch's pictures...and I know I've seen a few others, too :)

You may have seen these already. If not, I hope they are
    helpful.

Boxerpups- Thanks for the pictures! I really like the blue in the fifth picture for the hutch...and the island with the beadboard :)

Hey lavender!! How about a creamy yellow color?? (more yellow than cream...) It would work with both blue and green, and would be warmer than plain white. (but it would look sharp against white trim.) I think if you went plain white on the uppers it would be stark against the warm cabinet stain below. But a muted yellow would look nice (and yes, that is what I'm thinking of in my kitchen too!) Sort of like Boxer's last picture, only a tad yellow-er.

I like the brick-look flooring! Vinyl is awesome. My dad has black and white flooring in his kitchen that still looks great being 15 years old, and always cleans up great. Just be really careful with the seams, he's had some lifting on his one seam (down the hall from the kitchen-- high traffic) because they glued it down the same as the rest of the floor, and it probably needed extra glue and sealer. He's had his fixed and it looks fine, but it happened within 2 years of putting the floor in, so make sure whomever installs your floor knows how to seam it properly-- or try to do it without seams!!

This is what I am considering. Like you, I've thought that all stained wood might be a bit much.

Noelle- Thanks for the tip on the vinyl floors. Creamy yellow would be a nice choice for the upper cabinets, but I'm planning to paint the walls a soft gold color. It's going to be wonderful in your kitchen...what color are you painting your walls?

Marti- That's a beautiful picture...and a great idea! I like the way the hood is a different color and matches the hutch. Maybe I could do something like that with my island and hutch and a few upper cabinets...and the hood :)

Nice wood tone, too. I like the cream, but I'm planning to use white appliances...so I hope the green and blue accents (mostly green) will work as well.

Lavender - the pictures here (http://www.houseofturquoise.com/2011/04/landmark-kitchens.html) don't show different color cabs but I thought you might like the look of the blue cabs with the white AGA. You may have already seen it, but I just spotted it and thought of you
    :-)

I have white appliances too wondered how a light gray for the painted cabinets would look. I actually haven't got that far yet in my thinking & planning.

Chris- Thank you for the link...that's a beautiful kitchen. I like the blue and of course, all kitchens look wonderful, with an AGA, don't you think? :)

Marti- I've seen light gray and white cabinets, with stainless steel appliances, but not white. Here's a link to Sarah Richardson's farmhouse kitchen. She painted the lower cabinets light gray, the uppers white and the island yellow...and they're all Ikea cabinets. You can get more details at HGTV.com.
