decision time stress

Howdy

Still haven't ordered cabinets. Granted the day I was supposed to go in I got a flu-like cold that knocked me out for a few days, then the kids were on spring break, then a huge volunteer commitment came up and here I am a month later from when I should have ordered and I keep putting it off. Don't know if I'm afraid to make the 'final' step - if buying cabinets really means that I'll be living w/out a kitchen for weeks, I'll really have to fork over the money to pay for the cabinets, and the contractor will really be changing things. I just don't know that I'm ready. Is it hard to just do it?

Part of the problem is I don't love the plan, but I don't really have other options. And my dear darling hubby tells me we are moving every 6 months..so I don't want the kitchen of my dreams just to have to leave it soon, but I also don't want a kitchen built just to sell, because then we'll live here another 20 years! How do I just bite the bullet and move on?

And the little thing called a budget smudget!

    cosmo...

Buying the cabinets means you are going through with it. They are expensive, and once you order them, you can't turn back.

It doesn't sound to me like you are ready for this. I wouldn't suggest you do this if you are moving in 6 months!
I would only remodel if I planned on being there long enough to really enjoy the outcome!

    cosmocat,

I can understand why you are reluctant to pull the trigger. Are you really moving every 6 months? Why is there a chance you will be there 20 years if he tells you every 6 months? And can your next house have a kitchen that you love?

I agree with addict, doesn't sound like you are ready. Maybe it was a good thing you were delayed a month ago but it still sounds like you need to step back and reevaluate.

    I feel your frustration, though.

oops...dear hubby gets fed up with his job every 6 months it seems and threatens to move. We don't move that often - we've been here 4 years and are 5 miles away from our last house which we lived in for 8 years. just the stress of his job and the market as it is...don't know how much longer he will have a job or so he claims.

My dad was like that too, but eventually we stopped moving and he'd go find a temporary job elsewhere. The one job he really liked closed his department after just a few years. (Is your DH an engineer, by chance? My brother has been the same way, either losing his jobs to cutbacks or disliking them or the people he works with, or taking temporary jobs in other places. I figured it must be the engineer mindset... no offense to any engineers here!)

So what does your DH think about the remodel? If he's up for it, have you posted your layout? (Sorry if you have and I've missed it. I've dared not comment while in the middle of my own... needed to see if mine was going to work first!) At least give your friends here a chance to help you give your plan a chiropractic adjustment before giving up or giving in!

I just searched and see that you have posted your layout multiple times. I won't begin to pretend to give helpful comments, but what is it that you are not excited about/want to change? Which one did you stop on and what feels wrong about it? Surely there is a solution to it.

I find it helpful, even tho its sometimes painful, to remember what my goals were. I have learned that if I am sorta ready, but sorta don't want to go, that mean there is something wrong with what I'm planning to do.

Sometimes I may like or even love what I'm planning, but sometimes it doesn't meet my goals for the project - or at least not at the price I'm happy paying. I feel stuck and unable to move forward - mostly because I need to start over with fresh eyes that stay on the prize - getting as much of our real goals as I can for the dollars we have, with as many designer do-dads as I can afford to work in.

Choices can be hard without unlimited funds - my much anticipated replacement for POC range is the new kitchen floor and cabinet doors. dh's new music keyboard is the plumbing. I'm grateful that we gave up other "I want" items and not very many of the "I need" kind.

Am I happy? I was happy enough to commit to the final plan and I'm happy enough with how its turning out, but we haven't used it yet - we might get water next week. The more we build things, the more I like the way its coming together. Dh says that he will be happy when I'm happy - a kindness for me.

I think it's important to listen to the stucky-ness. It can help you clarify what's wrong, if you let it.

Plus then you can contribute to the "How to survive your remodel" cookbook. I'm writing the chapter on how to survive with only one burner and four square feet of "counter" in a corner of the former dining room - now the lumberyard and storage shed. I am laughing back here.

Honey, pass the vodka will ya?

    Thanks for the commments!

bmore...thanks for reminding me and making me feel more positive in the why of the way things are layed out. One positive is I have gone to the places where I get stuck and go round and round to find something different but as the plan stands it addresses those areas of stucky-ness.

I am one who always wishes I had done something else, or picked something different. I never seem to be happy with the decision. Hubby isn't helpful in the planning but is supportive, in that he says whatever it takes to make me happy...within budget of course. On one hand I'm just afraid of the interruption in our lives, I'm not known for my cleaning skills or organization and to have what I've known taken away and redone sends me into a tizzy. On the other hand I like the looks of an island vs a peninsula but I really don't have the room for an island so we end up with a peninsula - and I want seating at the peninsula. I could do an island but I couldn't have seating. I definately don't hate it.

Part of me doesn't want a kitchen that anyone else could have...I want something that will stand out and say WOW. What a neat idea. Great use of space. Wish I had thought of that. I don't want ho-hum. And I'm not feeling wow potential on paper.

I've gotten feedback and the final plan seems to be what works best (linked below. I get stuck with the 'if onlys'...if only we had another 6 inches to work with, if only there wasn't those little jogs in the load bearing walls...if only....

I get stuck with the if we move thought too, because I don't want to spend thousands, tens of thousands more, just to make it what I think I want. Maybe I don't know what I want...don't know.

Thanks for listening to me ramble...just stuck on the edge of this precipice and inching towards jumping in or walking away. The stress of having to make the final decision is so overwhelming. I guess I need to keep in mind that doing this kitchen as current plans stand won't be a wrong decision.
