I've done that in hot summer months.

I use my duvet as a cover that I do not sleep under and turn it down before bed. I sleep under a sheet and a blanket. In winter, several layered blankets.

The duvet is filled with a thin, non puffy quilt. This gives heft and helps it drape better.

We put an older lighter weight quilt inside ours for the summer months, but I don't see why you couldn't use it as is if it's comfortable for you.

Thanks for the responses, and that's a good idea about putting a light quilt inside it to help it keep its shape a little better.

I put a down blanket in mine in the summer.

I use mine with nothing inside year round. In the cold months I keep a cotton thermal blanket under the duvet cover, not inside (or sometimes a down blanket under it). I find it's easier to make the bed with nothing in the cover.

I did this for several years. DH doesn't like puffy or heavy bed covers. So this was how I could have some sort of cover in the summer and still keep it light enough for him. We got a very thin quilted bed cover a couple of years ago, so I no longer have to use the poor hollow duvet cover.

Yeah, it has worked out very well for us and you can clip them inside just like you can with a comforter. Our bedroom is on the second level and it gets pretty toasty sometimes so during the hottest part of the summer, I just use a normal sheet under it in case the quilt gets too warm.

If you have an IKEA near you, they have a very, very thin comforter that is only $10. It is perfect for us in Houston where the thick, fluffy comforters are a killer. Unfortunately, they don't sell them online, I'm including the link from the website, below.

Sounds like this works well, then. And Drjoann, thanks for the info on the Ikea comforter. The closest Ikea is about three hours away, but I'll keep that in mind if I get up that way.

Oh, want to pass on a hint for the thin IKEA comforter - I got a spare and the least expensive duvet cover I could find for it. When we are traveling for more than a night or two, I pop that into a space bag & carry it with us in the car. It really is nice to be able to pull off the top layer of the hotel bedding & replace it with my own comforter.

(On the return trip, I just put it back in the space bag & patiently squeeze out the air by hand. It works.)

We have a beautiful chenille duvet cover that I use in my bedroom for fall/winter. As a woman of a certain age I had to stop putting the comforter inside because I got too hot despite the fact that we love a COLD bedroom. Now it's used like a blanket/instead of a blanket and tucked in all around. The down comforter is folded at the end of the bed to pull up when needed. Now my bed not only looks well made but is actually comfortable when sleeping in.

LOL at sorriso! I, too, am of a "certain age" and like/need the bedroom (and every room I'm in, for that matter) to be cool. Thanks for mentioning the chenille. I'll look at those too.

I have used two different duvet covers without a comforter. Both always looked nice and there was no problem with hanging correctly.

Drjoann, thanks for the ideas. Funny how this topic came up.I am just getting around to getting reid of the comforter. All these empty duvet covers. Thought I was thinking on my own. The IKEA idea is the best. I have a king size duvet but a queen IKEA will do. Hotel covers-yuck.I just got a small set of hives on my arm thinking about it. Honestly.

Drjoann, that is a great idea about taking your Ikea comforter with you when you travel. I know the sheets get washed, but the blankets and bedspreads in hotels kind of creep me out. In fact, my aunt says the first thing she does in a hotel is pull off the bedspread. One of my friends even takes her own sheets and pillows!

I never thought about just using the cover until I read this thread. We have a down comforter that we rarely use 'cause it's so hot. Today I took it out of the duvet cover and just put the cover on the bed. Thanks for the idea!

i always just use the cover not the duvet lol in the summer its a perfect blanket i have several so i can always change it up... in the winter i use blankets and coverlets but the summer bedding is cotton sheets and duvet covers :) makes for a comfy pretty bed

I bought a ,king size set that only included 2 pillow cases and the duvet cover no insert. Does anyone know where i can get the insert?

Just look for comforters. You can get down or fake down in many different thiicknesses/weights depending what your needs are. Or get a thick one for winder and a thinner one for warmer weather. Depends on where you live and how warm/cool your seasons are.

Ikea is a good place to look. Target, lots of online places like the Company Store, etc.
