How big are your bedside tables?

We're going to start our bedside tables this weekend.

I have been working in the design for a couple of weeks now, and think I finally have it...The size is 27" high x

34" long x 18" deep. It is going to have two drawers (side by side) and a shelf in the middle. The wood is going to be rift white oak. Last week, I posted our antique wash stand... I have gathered a lot of inspiration from the wash stand for the bedside tables, and the tables will look like a companion piece to the wash stand.(I hope)

How big are your bedside tables? I know that what I plan on is going to be bigger than the average tables. Does anyone have big tables? There will be 12" of space from the end of the tables to the wall...

Here is the wash stand..It measures, 28"H x 33" L x 18" D

I plan on duplicating the legs...under the drawers (two side x side drawers) there will be a shelf (6" down)that will mirror the bottom of the wash stand. Any thoughts or input is welcomed.

    Ours are 31"H and measure 34" x 19".

Each table has one drawer with cabinet doors under the drawer. There is a shelf in the cabinet area.

The one that matches our bedroom set is 30"H x 34"W x 18"D. We only had room for one when we bought the set. Now that we wanted another bedside table, we couldn't find the matching piece so we're using an old Victrola that had the guts removed. It's 33"H x 28"W x 20"D. Our mattress and box springs are extra tall, so we really needed the extra height. They are the perfect size for us.

Thank you very much Mona...I was worried that I was going too big! You put my mind at ease.
I think I'll bump it back up to 28" high...Here is a rough drawing of what I have planned.
Right now it shows two drawers with a space in the middle...
I could do two drawers that butt together (no space in the middle) or even one drawer? The drawers will be about 5 1/2" deep.
The shelf in the middle will have a 6" space, just enough for some magazines or a couple of books and a box of tissues.
The shelf will also have some wood carvings in the middle, and it may slim down somewhat in the final product.
The Chippendale knobs (I have 4 of them) I picked up at a yard sale several years ago...Now I have a place for them. :)

Here is a close-up of the chippendale handles.

Thank you Hoosergirl...hmm, Another high table :)
...and here I thought 28" was high? Any other thoughts or photos welcomed.

I forgot to ask, do you think 12" of wall space on either side of the end table is OK? ...not that I have a choice,
cause the stuff I want to put on my table, I need a minumum
of 32" however, 34" would be better.

one more thing, Here is a photo of the top, I plan on making the top, perhaps just slightly thicker by 1/4"
The final piece will closely resemble my drawing, however
I plan on mimicking the wash stand more than the drawing depicts.

I like our bedside tables to only be a few inches from the bed so that we can easily reach them. On my side, it's next to an open doorway (into the sitting room) so it's not as tight feeling as if it was next to a wall, but there's only a few inches on the other side. Oh DH's side, there's about 8" between the end of the table and the adjacent wall and it doesn't feel too tight. Hope that helps!

We don't have a lot of wall space to spare with these nightstands, but since we needed 2 of them we went for it. I personally don't have a problem with the fact that they just fit.

By placing the bed on this wall we gave ourselves a lot of space on one side of the bed and a huge area at the foot of the bed.

Thanks Hoosiergirl, yes, it was helpful.
Thanks very much Mona for the pic, you tables are lovely.
Firstly, I'm glad you have a lot of stuff on them, cause I have a lot of stuff to put on mine. Thanks to your photo, I mocked up a table with a snack table and some table pads.
The size is only 20" wide x 15" deep. (ours will be 14" longer and 4" deeper) However, I just jumped it up to 29"
    high.
The headboard is 4" away from the end table, in this photo. This will leave about 11 or 12" to the wall on each side of the end tables. The end table will come past the bookcase by 1"
Please everyone give your opinions, on the height of 29" and also the drawers two or one? (the wash table has one)
I am open to any and all suggestions, as it is difficult when designing your own piece. I always try use all kinds of visual aids to mock up the pieces full size...

I've measured the various night tables and beds in my house, and have come to the conclusion that the top of the night table should be no more than 6-7" above the mattress.

Looking at your photo it appears your mattress is lower than ours. Our tables are 5" higher than our mattresses; I wouldn't be comfortable with them any higher than that. What's the height difference in your mock-up?

Just a thought....are you planning on changing out your mattresses in the near future? Chances are that the new ones will be thicker than the ones you have now and then your tables will be too low. That's what happened to us, and thus, the taller night stands.

The drawer front is about 5½" high and having that one drawer is sufficient for me, but it wouldn't be as useful if it were split into side by side drawers.

What we love about the table design is the storage cabinet under the drawer. With some wicker baskets and the shelf inside, it stores a whole bunch of stuff in there and it always looks neat.

My mattress is approximately 25 1/2" to 26" off the floor. The difference is 3 1/2" in the mock-up.
The wash stand is 28" high...How high is your mattress, Mona?
Do you think I should go to 30" high?
I have a few more miles still left on my mattress, but truthfully I was thinking of raising the bed about 1 1/2"
Hubby thinks it's a dumb idea though...
We can build the tables so that we can raise them up a tad if we wanted to.
Re: the drawers, I like th look of one drawer and think it would be a nicer companion with the wash stand, however, I want to be able to open the drawer from the bed without getting up, so two drawers are more practical. I want to keep face/hand cream, reading glasses, sleeping mask etc...in the drawer near the bed. The other drawer I plan on keeping costume jewerly.
    Thanks Sue.

I had to chuckle when you asked if anyone had a big table as a nightstand. I'm using an rustic antique table for mine and I love it. I wanted a lot of space and had the room on that side of the bed.
Here's DH's nightstand, which is pretty typical. Sorry, I don't have a better pic of it. It matches the bed, though:

    And here's my table ;^D

Mona: I LOVE your bedroom . . . how lovely!!!

For some reason, I thought your mattress was lower than ours. Now that I look again I see it is, but not by much. Ours is 27"H and I measured the table again and it's 32" high, not 31".
I understand why 2 drawers would work better for you. I also keep lotion, tissues, lozenges, pen, paper, sound masker and a large flashlight in my drawer. The cabinet holds magazines and books.
Personally, I think I'd go 30" high, especially if you may raise the bed.

We can't go any higher with the bed...I'm only 5'1" and I'd need a running jump to get in there if ours were any higher.

I wish I had your skills. Gosh, your home is just lovely!

Just for reference for our table heights, our bed was taller than most to begin with, I think, plus we have a tall box spring, a pillowtop mattress AND a featherbed. It comes to 33" to the top of the mattress and 36" tall to the top of the featherbed, so we really needed taller bedside tables.

Your bedrooms are ALL so pretty! I'm still deciding which direction I want to go with ours. I think I have the inspiration, but need to put it all together and then buy or make window treatments, bedding, etc. SOMEDAY it will be finished!

30" high sounds about right for the table height. With the design you have for the top, the drawers should be very conveniently positioned.

Thanks Lynne for the pic's. I love that antique table, what are the measurements, and how high is your bed?

Mona, thank you. I just went up and measured my bed...It's 26" high. I mocked up the bed again to 30" and it looks so high.
We'll be gone all day tomorrow for a family reunion,
but Sunday I'll take another pic of the table @30". I think it looks high, cause I started with 27 inches, then settled on 28 then decided that 29" looked good... :)

Maybe after a couple of days 30" will be just right!
I also measured my dresser and it's 30 1/2" high...
    Hoosiergirl, I love high beds...
Sue, It's easier to cut down than to add on...but I know what the head carpenter is going to say..."measure twice, cut once, make up your mind!"

I hate to be such a pain in the butt, but :) I am becoming more and more indecisive as I get older.
Here is another mock up. This one is 29 1/2" and 34" long.
The top is a little off balance as I did the length with books, game boards and table leaves.
The picture frame on the end represents a mock up of a table top perfume cabinet we're currently making (the tables are the next project) The perfume cabinet is going to be approximately 10" wide x 15" high x 7 1/2 deep.
I was originally going to make it 9 x 13 x 7", but the mock-up showed me that I could go bigger.
Now here's my question, why does this table look so big. It is actually almost the same size as Mona's tables, a little smaller actually, but to me they look so big. I tried taking a photo from looking down on the table, more like Mona's photo and it still looks big.

When we make the tables, we'll make the tops more level than the mock up :))) I hope....

A further away shot. 34" long, why does it look so long?
Is it because I am use to looking at our 20 x 20 by only 22"high end tables?
    Thanks for all your help.

joann, when we switched from our smaller tables to the current ones we felt that we had made a terrible mistake. They looked huge!!! Over time we've gotten used to the size and wonder why we were ever concerned about them being too large.

We moved the old ones up to the bonus room and they look absolutely teeny to me now. Plus I realize there was little surface area for our "stuff".

I think the size you've mocked up now looks good and is in proportion to the rest of the room and furniture.

We have risers added to our bed frame to make it taller, and we use chests of drawers as our bedside furniture. Because storage is at a premium in this house, everything has to do double duty. But in any case, I really like having plenty of real estate next to the bed, as we are both undisciplined readers, and end up with stacks of books and magazines beside us. And the cat needs a place to look out the window as well.
Haven't got a photo, because we are switching rooms, and the bedroom theme just now is warehouse-closet-attic...

mine are 22-1/2" W x 14" D x 25" H and came with my bedroom set, 47 yrs. ago, still look great today.

I think the size is fine; it will just need some getting used to. Also, the sides will be slightly narrower than the top, so that will help visually, as will the details on the piece. I think it will be fine and you will love the extra storage/display space!

You are so talented! All the pieces you've ever posted are just beautiful.

Our mattress is 27" high. We had our birch nightstands built in a style reminiscent of Biedermeier and they are huge by conventional standards: 37 1/2"h X 32"w x 22"d. Four drawers with the top two slightly shallower. Works well for us. My husband's only has a lamp on top; I have lamp, phone, music and books.

I'd suggest moving your wonderful washstand temporarily next to the bed to get a real feel for what your new end table will be like. I also wonder if you'll be happy with the tall legs with the bookcase behind and the chair legs nearby. If not, you could always add another drawer over the shelf or add a second shelf so that the legs are a few inches higher than those on your dresser (which is also beautiful BTW). Can't wait to see your new tables!

Oh my gosh, Thank you all so much for the feedback everyone... Mona, thanks for your input especially, because the sizes are almost identical...
Here is what I've been use to for so many years...22" high...low, low, low!

Hoosiergirl, you are absolutely right, the body of the cabinet is going to be a few inches narrower.
Now about the shelf. You are absolutely right Abundant,
I could add another drawer or even a drop leaf thing, (like a drop leaf desk) But, I'm not concerned about that I think the tables are going to look good. The lower shelf
on the bookcase is 25" off the floor, so the bottom shelf will not be visible behind the tables, however, the tops of the books will. Also we made the bookshelf many years ago, and as a matter of fact, we just moved it up to 25" when we painted the room, it was at 22" off the foor (like our old tables) In the above photo it had already been moved up to 25". .. Thanks for all your help Ladies, now I am really anxious to get started.
Also thanks for the idea to move the wash stand next to the bed, what a good idea!
